He has finally gotten ND to the point of perennial top 10 team and his recruiting is the best it’s been. Maybe also he just wants a change and 12 years is enough. Definitely leaving the program in excellent shape and a full cupboard.
Brian Kelly's track record indicates he will win. He was recruiting at an elite level at Notre Dame, which isn't easy.
With playoff expansion and a big raise, this is a good move for him. It tells me he doesn't think Notre Dame can win a national championship. Simply getting to the playoff is probably the ceiling for them, whereas LSU has proven it will do whatever it takes to win the big trophy.
Too much is being made out of him not being Cajun or "one of them."
Ed O was the embodiment of everything LSU is and they told him to hit the road 18 months after winning the natty.
Notre Dame doesn't have the same facilities and their academics are a hurdle. That he had Notre Dame competing where they were was a minor miracle. There's a reason they only had 1 bowl win between 1993-2010.
At LSU, he's going to have access to better recruits -- the kind of players he could never dream of landing at Notre Dame -- plus the commitment of a school that doesn't rest on its laurels of "being Notre Dame" and thinking that matters to 17-year-old high school kids.
Maybe Kelly won't win a national championship but he's closer at LSU than he will ever be at Notre Dame. There's only one program in America the last 3 HCs have won the national title. It's LSU.
The fans will inevitably turn on him and be unhappy but they're perpetually angry down there. That comes with the territory. Kelly took on this challenge because it's a better gig than Notre Dame. He's not backing down from a tougher path to the playoff because just getting there isn't the goal.
Most likely coach LSU 2-3 years and make his 20-30mil and call it a career. SEC teams start the season with a loss to Bama’ or UGA in the title game, and Napier will most likely have FLA rolling again. One slip in the regular season and thats 2 losses and no playoff, unless the playoff expands.
