Thinking WAAAYY outside the box.

6

Feb 20, 2023, 3:41 PM

After Dabo's realignment takes place, how about this:

48 teams playing Big Boy football.
8 divisions, 6 teams each.

10 game regular season. 5 in division, 5 out.

16 team playoff.

32 teams play 10 games.
8 teams play 11 games.
4 teams play 12 games.
2 teams play 13 games.

One of the complaints of expanding the playoffs is too many games. This takes care of that. With the 48 teams not having to share money with 130 teams, but only 48, and with TV contracts getting bigger and bigger, this should be plenty of money.

Heck, make it an 11 game regular season and you still play fewer games than now.

Because it makes too much sense

I think the current set up makes no sense. Too many Division One teams in FBS and then we play FCS schools too. Crazy. Time to start with a clean sheet of paper.

This related to the other "box" thread?***

In your scenario

Feb 20, 2023, 4:24 PM

Do all other college football teams and all other college sports continue as is in their current conferences?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If that happened we coukd see extensive conference realignment

Feb 20, 2023, 4:28 PM

Conferences realigning based on Olympic sports would make sense. It could be regional or conferences could revert back to pre-football realignment as it currently stands.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Basically adds a second FCS division from leftovers

Feb 20, 2023, 4:33 PM

Remaining teams realign based on geography and follow a playoff format like FCS currently does.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is what I was thinking, but

Feb 20, 2023, 7:10 PM

I wasn’t asking for your opinion. I want to know what the OP thinks because this is his thread and his idea. You’re making assumptions. You don’t know if that’s what he thinks or not.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the teams left out will scramble...

Feb 21, 2023, 9:02 AM

.... and do the best they can to try and survive. I think conference realignment will be massive and extensive.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree.

Feb 21, 2023, 3:44 PM

And for the teams that form that new top tier in football they can pick the best conference for their Olympic sports. But geographically speaking, Clemson would be in some form of revised ACC or SEC and it would be amazing in Olympic sports.

You might even have some form of super conference for the Olympic sports. Something like a merger between the ACC and SEC for example. With the smaller football schools going out and creating their own conference. That would probably include Vanderbilt and Duke, GT, Wake, etc. because I don’t see them being part of a non-football super conference.

Maybe so. It's a real shame that it is headed to this.

Feb 20, 2023, 4:51 PM

Relegating so many teams to Division II in essence. The Big 48 should at least have the decency to call it the semi-pro college football conference. But they won't.

128 in relegation style setup

Feb 20, 2023, 5:19 PM

Tier 1, 64 teams split among 8 divisions.

12 game reg season, 7 div games, 5 T1 games
1 preseason T2 game does not count toward tourney entry

Top two from each T1 division play in Champs tournament.

Bottom from each div plays Top team from corresponding tier 2 div to decide on relegation/promotion.

Tier 2, 64 teams, 8 divs
Top two in each div play to determine who plays in relegation game.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

64 is wayyyy too many

Feb 20, 2023, 7:12 PM

Even Dabo said less than 50.

There are less than 50 programs that are committed to winning a championship and putting that type of money into their programs.

These 48 schools should be the XFL

extension. the 'rest' of the universities can then have student athletes and a national championship.

I like an idea like this.... however

Feb 21, 2023, 9:21 AM

The problem is and has been TV, and all the money they make from having a large quantity of games to air. And of course we would only have 5 guaranteed games to watch in Death Valley each year.

And in this scenario, for those 48 teams, TV loses out on 45 games from the current model before expansion to a 12 team playoff.

16 games (32 teams) that don't play an 11th game
22 games (44 teams) that don't play the 12th game
4 games (10 teams) that don't play the 13th game (using the power 5 conference championships as the comparison here, and only 1 game in this proposed format)
2 games that would get 4 teams to 14 games are lost
1 game that would get 2 teams to 15 games are lost

I do agree something that something has to change and needs to be a big change.
