IMO Hobby probably gets the 1st call, but Bates gets the job

Marion Hobby is currently the D-Line coach for a the Bengals after they poached him from the Dolphins last year with more money (he must be pretty motivated by the cash to take a lateral job in Cincinnati after being in Miami IMO). Hobby's track record with defensive lines is phenomenal with us as well as in the NFL. However, I think he's been bit by the NFL bug so I don't think he'd take the job unless they were going to pay him what they paid BV (which I don't think we'd do).
Bates has been the guy Dabo has been grooming from what I've heard for that D-Coordinator spot once BV ever decided to seek greener pastures. Bates likely gets a raise to like 700-800K/yr for the new title and Dabo hires a new LB coach internally. I wouldn't be shocked to see somebody like Conn get moved to LB coach and they promote Deandre McDaniel (current Defensive Analyst) to Safeties Coach. The program saves about $1.5M/yr in their coaching budget and hopes to get similar results.

I'd give hobby whatever he wanted. But it seems like everyone is forgetting the big piece. Bates could probably call the defense. No problem.
You've got to have some respected person that can recruit. THAT'S why Oklahoma hired CBV. They could have gotten a coach.
And saving money? Who cares. Money not an issue. If I thought we could, I'd throw 2.5 mil at lanning if he'd come. Heck, get that fella at UNC that's killing us in recruiting.

Dabo has had a replacement DC and LB coach lined up for years. Unless things really go south sometime, it's going to be internal promotions.
All this really shows what patience brings. Brent could have gone to several high level jobs over the years, but every one of them was a situation where the team was down and the coach was fired. This is a playoff contender he coached at for a decade; who just had their coach poached. Perfect situation to succeed.

I would hope not on either of these. I would hope that we’d set our sights hire than a journeyman NFL coach (yes, I understand the nostalgia) and another who’s on his first power 5 job, with no coordinating experience. If that’s the path, maybe it works out, if not, then we’ll be back here in a couple of years, or replacing someone else in a few years.

Here's what I don't understand. Sure he was at OK for a long time, but they let him walk because they thought so much of him they were going to make him a CO-Defensive Coordinator... So they didn't care enough to keep him then, but they want him now? Good luck Coach....

because the HC's brother needed a job, nothing more. It that hadn't happened, he'd likely still be at OK, either as HC or DC. We got so, so lucky.

He's more experienced and has done a great job(vs. Bates). Its well known Hobby prefers the NFL and not having to recruit. I'd also check out D.Mason. I hope we go outside but would be ok with Reed.
