Venables says kickoff coverage teams were embarrassing in 2015

Many Clemson fans thought that Clemson’s kickoff coverage teams were disgusting and terrible in 2015, and defensive coordinator Brent Venables agrees with those sentiments. In fact, he called them disgusting and terrible. Full Story »

It cost us a national championship last year.

Aug 4, 2016, 10:20 PM

And probably should have lost us another game or two, if not for how dynamic the rest of our team was. Hopefully this gets fixed within the next few weeks, because there is no excuse to lose games because of poor special teams play. It's not about talent, it's about discipline and heart.

The kickoff did not cost us the championship last year. It was the combination of kickoff, onside kick that caught every one off guard, and the fact that we couldn't cover a friggin tight end across the center of the friggin field. We could have come back from any one, even two of those. All three sealed it.

same formation used last year. Coaching 101 for kickoffs is lane coverage and we gave away 3 right off the bat hoping to rely on our speed and agility to make up for it but found out you can gamble only so long before you lose and I still feel it.

Re: I'm anxious to see if the crowd boos if they line up in that

I don't like our formation at all. We are leaving about a third of the field open and trusting that our kicker is going to put is in the opposite corner. Find someone to kick it out of the back of the end zone every time, and I
won't care how we line up.

Who was the kick blocker that Venables is so high on?***

I watched that interview last night and thought the exact same thing. I love the character of this man. He is so direct during an interview. And if he does not like the question he simply says I am not going to answer that instead of talking around the question. It makes me laugh every time.

Aug 5, 2016, 7:19 AM

That'd make it more like, the coaches not in charge weren't gonna call out a co worker. So ,finally, the guy in charge spoke out. It was his place to, no one else's.

the part of the game that every tiger fan heart stops.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

people are so highlight-snapshot-talking point oriented

Aug 5, 2016, 10:51 AM

these days.

To say that "Special Teams cost us a National Championship" is pre-ponderously ridiculous.

Yes, KO coverage was terrible, horrendous, and downright scary.

But KO coverage gave up 18 points all year - the same number of points scored by Mike Bellamy in his one year at Clemson. The same.

And did Mike Bellamy win the ACC title? Did Mike Bellamy beat Virginia Tech at their place? Did Mike Bellamy set the tome for the season with 75-yard jaunt?

KO coverage gave up 6 points in the Natty. The same points scored by Greg Hegel on FG's. Did Hegel "almost win" the Natty?

People need to get off it. Find a way to develop a more rounded attitude towards life,

starting with, "I don't have to blame everything bad on someone or something. I don't have to have a whipping post."

Good Lawd people.

THE TEAM lost the Natty. THE TEAM. THE FAMILY.

Aug 5, 2016, 1:09 PM

It certainly contributed to it. And it was the most atrocious part of our game....all year long.

We do Chicken right...it's not just for frying anymore!

yes, it contributed to the loss... and unnecessarily so....

Aug 5, 2016, 4:26 PM

but ST didn't "cost" is the game,

because covering a TE would be good too,

or not kicking FG's on 3 possessions,

or not throwing an INT,

etc. etc.

I still think the key stat was when we scored:

we scored 4 TD's and 2 FG's on 6 possessions when we were behind (read: sense of urgency).

we scored 1 TD, a missed FG, and 3 punts in 5 possessions when we were tied (read: some urgency).

we had 2 punts and and INT on the 3 possessions we were ahead (read: not so much).

that speaks to "killer instinct" too a la BV's comments.

Re: yes, it contributed to the loss... and unnecessarily so....

Aug 5, 2016, 4:36 PM

Agree. We must learn to step on people's necks and not get complacent.

St, not covering the tight end or tackling him, a luck catch , cost us the game. I figured either qb would of had a pick of 2. So when you factor that in, we lost because of nuances

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Obviously many plays contributed to the outcome of the game.

Aug 5, 2016, 6:23 PM [ in reply to yes, it contributed to the loss... and unnecessarily so.... ]

Nobody is discounting the fact that we can point to many things that we could have done better against Alabama. But you can't deny that our offense and defense did more than enough to win the game, and if not for special teams blunders we would have probably won the game. We can argue over semantics all day, but if we had addressed stupid special teams issues at some point throughout the year we would have beaten Alabama.

We weren't even ready for the onside kick. How can you not at least be ready for that possibility?

If you aren't willing to mostly blame the loss on special teams, then you are obviously okay blaming a defense which largely shut down Alabama and an offense which moved the ball at will on them. I feel that those two units did more than enough, and I won't blame them for the loss - especially since the special teams were atrocious as usual.
