They don't make enough "Westerns" today...
Sep 28, 2016, 9:44 PM

|
So I got sucked into "Open Range" which is my current favorite western of all time. Charlie said to Sue, "Men are going to get killed here today Sue, and I'm gonna kill them! You understand that?" This is one of my most favoritest scenes from a western ever. Just one among many...

If it's not a soap I can watch it. I will not watch something that's going to drag out for five or ten years.

If not my absolute favorite. IMHO, it doesn't get any better than Lonesome Dove. Not really a movie, but whatever.

then I was there. Usually, we'd get a Terence Hill-Bud Spencer double feature about once or twice a year. And years later, I found Hill's Canadian TV show Lucky Luke in the budget DVD bin and bought all those to watch with Joonyer when he was little.

@camcgee mentioned Bone Tomahawk yesterday, which is an excellent and unique horror-western. Plus is has Kurt Russell. And Neanderthal caveman cannibals.

Still a western with loads of gunfights and horses though.
The Salvation is another good one I saw recently. About an immigrant who comes over to settle in the west and has to avenge a death. Solid.

I still think the original John Wayne movie was better, and the dialogue in it was excellent, but both had the same pace and phrasing that truly sets them apart from typical westerns. Tombstone very much falls into that same category as far as dialogue goes.
