New Story: Swinney says proposed transfer rules would create "free agency and total chaos"

Swinney says proposed transfer rules would create "free agency and total chaos"

Head coach Dabo Swinney has drawn fire from around the country for his stance on paying student-athletes, saying he doesn’t want to see college football become professional. With the recent FBI investigation into college basketball, it makes sense. But he’s also against a recent push to allow players to transfer without penalty. Full Story »

Coach Swinney is correct.***

All they'd to do is "get mad" and basically leave.

The players would not commitment to a university at all

my previous message should have said: all they would have to do is basically leave

The players would have no commitment to the university.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I do wish they would remove the power to block transfers

Feb 27, 2018, 8:38 AM

from coaches. If done within the rules, a player should be able to transfer where ever they wish.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

there are alot of negatives about this

Feb 27, 2018, 8:51 AM

An athlete that is trying to avoid discipline issues from a coach could leave

An athlete that hasn't worked hard enough to make the first string

Because of raiding a roster, a team could lose all its 2 deeps, requiring the 1's to play
too long every game. Leading to higher chance of injury from fatigue.

Rosters of less than 85 from raiding

Some scholarships being pulled to make room for better athletes transferring in

It's a lousy idea in my opinion. And coaches should be able to block an athlete
from going to a school that they play.

What else does it mess up?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most of what you posted isn't relevent to the point i

Feb 27, 2018, 2:46 PM

was making, but i would like to hear an explanation for the one that actually is. Why should a player be blocked from transferring to a school that his current team plays? Is there really a legitimate reason? Obviously it's in the COACHES best interest for it not to happen, but who has the players best interest in mind here? Anyone?

Re: Most of what you posted isn't relevent to the point i

Scenario, Alabama is full on scholarships but will have openings next year, player wants to go to Alabama so they tell him go to Auburn for a year and then we will have an opening for you and you can give us insight on the playbook and you hold no penalty to being able to play. Player still might not play but gives Alabama an edge because he knows the playbook, player was just used by the school and now is stuck somewhere and has to transfer again but the university was able to take advantage of him.. It's allowing a system to become corrupt (or more corrupt) than it already is.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Most of what you posted isn't relevent to the point i

Feb 27, 2018, 4:12 PM

Also, player joins a university, player doesn't listen to team rules or discipline and when the superb athlete has disciplinary action taken he threatens to leave the school putting the school in a tough spot. Players can now use this to hang over coaches heads and the schools that let them get away with anything will be able to get more recruits or transfers and you could end up seeing Baylor 2.0

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They can already do this now. Blocking their potential

Feb 28, 2018, 8:36 AM

transfer destinations does nothing to alter that scenario.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't buy that. How many players are really going to be

Feb 28, 2018, 8:35 AM [ in reply to Re: Most of what you posted isn't relevent to the point i ]

willing to spend a year essentially spying on another school, then transferring and sitting out a second year before finally ending up at the school they initially wanted to go to TWO YEARS LATER??

People will sign their name, and not pay their loan. Our society calls it, "defaulting on a loan", but it's stealing.
What good would having a good signing class be?
A further gap would develop between the little schools and the big schools because if an individual develops a bigger school will find a way to (secretly) entice them. It's bad enough now the way the little boys get run over.

Disagree with Dabo

Feb 27, 2018, 9:33 AM

First and foremost, the rules should reflect what is in the best interest of the student-athlete, not the university and dang sure not what is best for the coaches.

I don't think there would be a mass exodus of players and some simple guardrails could be put in place to "control" the "free agency". Players can only transfer once and only after year two in the program. Coaches, staff, alum, boosters are not allowed to contact players or family; only the student can reach out to another team. Limit the number of transfers any school can have on its roster. Simple stuff like this would create some checks and balances.

Why should Zerrick Cooper or Tucker Israel be penalized as they were never going to start at Clemson but are quality players that deserve to have a chance to play somewhere else? If Hunter or Chase or (heaven forbid) Trevor want to move on if it is apparent they will not start, why should Clemson limit their opportunities?

I think it would play out fine and actually be good for quality programs who handle their business and students with integrity and honesty (ie ...like Clemson).

No way, it would mean the end to disciplining athletes and

Feb 27, 2018, 9:55 AM

create an incredible number of transfers making it as bad as basketball is but worse.

Re: Disagree with Dabo

Feb 27, 2018, 11:27 AM [ in reply to Disagree with Dabo ]

I agree with one addendum. I would say that the length of the scholarship should dictate the free agency. Until recently, student-athletes had one year scholarships that were renewed (maybe) annually. if the school/coach found better, they did not have to renew. So, the schools already had the benefits of free agency. With the new rules allowing longer scholarship terms, the athlete now effectively has the same commitment from the school. I say, if the athlete has a scholarship with the school for the next year, he has restricted free agency, as they do now. If they are on a one year ride, every year they are a free agent.

That makes the student and school fully accountable for the offered scholarship and the terms of that scholarship.

Re: Disagree with Dabo

Feb 27, 2018, 7:45 PM

I'd say let them transfer ONLY if the head coach while they sign their LOI takes a job at another school and if the team is put on probation that the student in question was not involved with.

Re: Disagree with Dabo

Feb 28, 2018, 5:55 AM

I do think a recruit should be able to transfer if the head coach leaves after he/she signs their letter of intent. I know the argument is the player signs with the school and not the coach but in reality if a player comes to Clemson it is largely because of Dabo and also to Alabama the same hold true with Saban. Just my opinion.

Re: New Story: Swinney says proposed transfer rules would create "free agency and total chaos"

Feb 27, 2018, 9:34 AM

Good coach, lousy logic. It is a matter of coaches -- who have all the power -- vs players -- who are helpless. If the coach leaves, let the player go. The proposed rules protect everybody and recognize the players as more than chattels. And the "consequences" to a coach leaving? Buyouts? Everybody knows the coach doesn't pay that anyway. A real consequence, now, would be the coach sitting out a year if he changes jobs ... But that would be wrong.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If a coach leaves kids should be allowed to transfer...

Feb 27, 2018, 9:37 AM

..... Just think, if dabo left for Bama for say $15 million a year (the buyout is tiny in this picture) and we bring in Will Muschamp as our head coach may be a few guys may say "thanks but no thanks". Yes, I know they sign with the school, but the coach is a big part of the picture.

The more rules we have on the books, the more opportunities we have for "skull-duggery". We have seen many instances where the NCAA has been selective, and sometimes, simply ignored obvious infractions. Current rules allow transfers but some coaches may impose restrictions, such as not transferring to a school they are scheduled to play during his time at the other school. There are obvious reasons for this restriction.

Wow. Definitely a hot button for allorangeallthetime52. Maybe this transfer proposal is not of his ilk. I do agree our society's acceptable permissiveness is way out of wack. We are seeing consequences everyday for this, imo.

Sounds like a cause and effect argument. Both sides of the potential effect make claims but no one knows for sure. Wide open transfers would lead to a type of free agency imo, but reasoned safeguards would damp out wholesale transfers.

A limited pilot program might be tried to judge the unknown dynamics. Limits could be numbers of transfers in a year, like 1-2 per school, and duration of the pilot program, or only transfer with strict requirements. I have never understood inability to transfer without sitting out a year unless you transfer into a lower division. I get conference. It's a two way street; helps a team one year but hurts another year. It's just a part of managing the roster.

There ya go.
They should try out a Pilot Program in the SEC since they’re the Almighty Conference.
Yeh! Why don’t they do that in the SEC this season to show everyone else in all the other conferences how SMOOTH & SEAMLESS it goes.
