One of my cherished Clemson memories is of a "Young Republican Rally" held at the "Y" Beach, with live entertainment provided by Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts. Now, this rally also, just coincidentally, had free beer, all you could drink. (Hey, this was the early 70's, any "Drink Responsibly" campaigns were decades away.)
Now, for you young'uns, you'll just have to Google or YouTube Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts. Suffice it to say, they were a musical "Truck Stop Humor" type of bawdy band. "There was an old man from Nantucket" type stuff. Who cared anyway, the real purpose of this thing was to drink beer, and, suffer hearing a campaign speech or two along the way somewhere in the evening. (Don't really even remember who those people were.)
Now, with the evening just about gone, we get to the part where God looks out for young fools. I had a white 1964 1/2 Mustang 2+2 (Fastback) at the time. I had built the engine in this thing to the point that it was what today would be called a "Pocket ROCKET." I was so "soused" from the free beer, (I did mention the free beer, right?) by the time I decided to leave, that when I got to my car, I took my keys out of my pocket, put them on the roof of the car for SOME reason, and then proceeded to look for them on the ground all AROUND the car for the next HOUR.
At the end of that time, having finally got my eyes focused to the point of being able to see the keys right in front of my face on the roof of the car, I got in, and made the short drive back over the bridge of Lake Hartwell, back to campus. God surely guided that Mustang home that night. When I woke up the next day, and went to move it from the temporary parking lot, before the end of the weekend, I found it parked diagonally across two parking places. Must have made sense at the time, I guess.
Now, would I repeat that today, knowing then what I know now? Almost assuredly not, but, when you are 19 years old, 10 Feet Tall and Bulletproof, you never think of those things. Luckily, at least on this occasion, God was a safe enough driver for both of us.

feeling that with the legal drinking age now 21, modern college kids just don't get to experience the same college "life" that we did back then. Not nearly naive enough to not know that underage drinking will, and does, happen all the time at college, but when the kids have to be at least "covert" about it, it just ain't the same.

And adds a whole new level of risk forcing parties off campus where you have to drive back. Worst that could happen when drinking was acceptable on campus is you'd fall into some bushes trying to stagger back to your dorm. Y beach keggers were outstanding.

Oh no. I’ve been “reminded” of quite a few times I don’t remember. Like the time my best friend carried me out of Littlejohn by the back of my belt at the end of a Jimmy Buffett concert in 1982. I know there are 10 stages of drunkedness in God’s Own Drunk but I only remember 7 that night. Problem is today it would have all been caught on camera and all over the web.
Another time at home over Christmas break my buddy and I went out and got completely wasted and he swore for years the future Mrs Rhettfla drove us home that night but we were on John’s Island and she was in Tennessee. I always thought that was more God than her that night …..

love hearing stories like this that remind of animal house,when college was actually college.it's what makes t-net fun and entertaining.helps realizing that there were others who did some of same type stuff that i did.had a weekend date with a winthrop girl stayed at the then calhoun hotel in anderson.at the close of the evening,leaving campus,and driving to the hotel room,i had to close one eye to be able to see where the the road actually was.not sure who,but somebody was looking out for me then and a goodly # of times afterward.guardian angel?

I used to laugh at people who claimed they had to close one

eye to drive after imbibing. Then it happened to me one time, upon leaving a Christmas party. I had started the evening with some two hour old Pink Jesus, then some straight grain alcohol, then a fifth of Jim Beam. Evidently, that was a winning combination. Even WITH one eye closed, I could not keep my car off those darn little rectangle shaped blue reflectors imbedded in the white lines on that part of I-26 in North Charleston.
And, I actually got pulled over by a trooper. This would have been around 1980. Through some miracle I have yet to figure out, I was able to walk his white line, touch my nose, etc. When he found out I was within a couple exits of the one to my house, he gave me a verbal warning, told me he was following me to the exit, and if he saw me back out on the road that night, he would, and I quote "Put me UNDER the Jailhouse."
Two things probably saved me that night, along with God. One, the trooper must have had a little Christmas spirit in him. Two, I think he was shocked that I made no pretense that I wasn't drunk. I told him I was coming home from a Christmas party, where I had been drinking cocktails all evening. I always heard that honesty was the best policy. In today's times, he would not have let me go, at all. And, I couldn't have really blamed him. It scared me enough that that was the last time I ever got behind the wheel completed toasted.
