USFL

May 8, 2022, 4:29 PM

No way this league makes it. Besides the on field product I've seen more fans at HS/REC league games.

When you don't have a great sports product you need to promote yourself as an event. Have food trucks and alcohol outside. Semi famous band performing at halftime. First 1000 kids get a free ice cream. Ladies night.

Have not even tuned in but have been curious to how it would turn out.

They are playing all the games in Birmingham.

So yeah, there are no fans. The ratings are not great but are slightly better than the XFL. The product on the field has been pretty good, though they definitely need better QB play.

I enjoy watching it. Kinda becoming a Breakers fan, even with Fedora as coach.

It is hard to get good QB play. Look at the NFL and half the teams have somewhat decent QB's, some are downright dreadful. There is a huge drop off from being a great college QB and transferring that to the NFL. When QB's like Brady, Rodgers, Stafford and some that have recently retired paly for 20 years and are still the best in the league, that tells you just how hard it is for younger QB's to make it! Sorta like being a third baseman for the Braves and having a 24 year-old Lawrence "Chipper" Jones in front of you, you ain't playing!

I remember in 2019 when a league called the AAF started up. I thought those games were more fun to watch than NFL games, but sadly the league folded a few months after it started due to bankrupcy. Hopefully the USFL doesn't go that same path.

There was a quasi decent crowd at the Birmingham game yesterday. Kinda had a drunken, minor league baseball crowd feel.

Why do these other leagues think they can succeed when none of the others ever have?

May 8, 2022, 6:26 PM

The original USFL, World League, XFL, Arena Football, etc. have either been unsuccessful or folded entirely after a season or two.

Success leaves clues, but so does failure.

The original AFL did, way back in 1960. But, they had some

advantages these modern leagues do not.

1) The NFL at the time played a rather boring brand of football. Running games dominated for the most part. The AFL was much more wide open passing games, with some burners at receivers.

2) The AFL had a TV contract, and did one thing right out of the gate that helped them tremendously. They started their games (all on Sunday, just like the NFL) at noon or 12:30, which was an hour ahead of the NFL schedule at the time.

3) The AFL had some deep pocketed owners, and they slowly began poaching top talent away from the NFL. Joe Namath immediately comes to mind, but there were many others.

4) NEVER discount the effect that the Jets win in Super Bowl III, followed by the Chiefs win the next year, had on the NFL. The merger was made much more "legitimate" by those wins as far as the powers that be in the NFL were concerned.

How would you define making it?

Re: USFL

Success will be all about TV ratings, by design. Putting all the games in Birmingham is a cost control measure and the city is happy to host. Birmingham is a football crazy town with a brand new downtown stadium - so it was a smart choice. Wouldn’t have better crowds in any other location.

If you’ve watched it’s decent football, close games and entertaining.

It’s a “made for tv” league. Fans in the stands don’t matter to them very much.

Re: USFL

May 9, 2022, 11:42 AM

I think it will make it. Fox owns it so money and TV will not be a concern. Games are entertaining. Will have better fan support when teams are playing in their own cities and get some better known players. Will need to increase player pay and get some players that fans will recognize their names but don't break the bank salary wise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Surely they weren't anticipating a profit playing all games at one site?

May 9, 2022, 11:44 AM

I don't get what they're trying to do?
