they are about to circle the wagons

Oct 7, 2021, 11:15 AM

They are coming for you wannabe Chris Gadsden's out here attempting to subvert majority rule.

This author is calling on the media to do a better job signaling the Trumpists as an existential threat, as if we haven't already received that message since January 6.

Dude should stick to music "journalism". On a positive note, the comments were entertaining. Delusion is alive and well amongst that group of intellectuals.

Are you denying that a majority of Republicans believe the election was "stolen", despite a lack of evidence?

I certainly can't speak for the majority of Republicans, or Democrats, but I do not personally believe the election was "stolen". I do however think Trump lost, far more so than Biden won. I'm pretty sure after the legacy media declared nuclear war on Trump, Democrats could have run me, you or my dog out there and beat Trump. And that's not intended to be a compliment to me, you, my dog or Joe Biden.

You are correct on the Trump lost more than Biden won. Joe got a bunch of "anybody but Trump" votes.

At some point the obvious answer is going to appear. Yes, internet anonymity is wonderful...the lack of accountability is not. And Facebook is flat outta control and isn't about to fix itself, you have to look no further than the Asperger's sociopath-in-charge Zuckerberg himself to know that. That dude ain't budgin'.

But he's gonna. The winds have shifted.

How to have both anonymity and accountability? The answer's fairly obvious...in much the same manner as we have to have a driver's license or a hunting and fishing license, the day is soon coming when we're going to have to register to use the internet...and abide by universal terms of service. Which means not spreading hate speech, not spreading deliberate misinformation or disinformation, and oh, yeah, not advocating to kill your neighbors.

If you can't do that, your license gets suspended, and you can't Internetz.

What's going to happen is that to use any form of service you're going to have to have a single, one-per-customer, licensed account, that links to any service you use on the net (google, facebook, Instagram, etc.) If you troll, misinform because you like spreading QAnon crap, disinform for the Russkies, or try to propose a revolution, that central account gets suspended and guess what, until your in-the-box time is served, you're off the net.

I know, I know. 1984. Thought Police. They're Watching Us. Well...it could lead to that, sure. But guess what...the alternative is utter and complete anarchy because the worst of the worst is what's getting through into peoples' brain-pans right now. People simply will not regulate themselves (or unplug, like I did, I have zero social media) and the world is turning into Babel at a wondrous rate - everybody's screaming at one another, nobody's listening or comprehending anybody else - so this is what's going to happen, like it or not.

As long as we can tie this SSO license

Oct 7, 2021, 11:50 AM

to vaccine status, political party, and develop a nice, robust type of scoring system for our citizens based on their ability to follow the rules by the Party tied to it as well - I'm all good with it!

The government needs to regulate who can do what. We all need to come together under the Party for the common good to ensure our Motherland is headed in the right direction.

poor man's addendum

Oct 7, 2021, 11:57 AM

We need a ####### QR code tattoo'd on our wrist. A simple scanner for each computer, phone, whatever device the future brings...will allow the Party to ensure only those who are allowed to join can.

We can then leverage this tattoo for entry / exit points to public places and places of business. We can set up points of entry to states to ensure eligible citizens are able to leave and/or access neighboring states in accordance to the threshold set by the local governments.

THEN we can tie the QR code to the Fed Coin wallets to ensure that citizens are able to spend Party approved funds whenever they need it! Get rid of those blood sucking banks and give the power of finance to the Party!

We are close!!

Re: poor man's addendum

Oct 7, 2021, 3:01 PM

...and that's exactly where you don't want to go.

Fine line between social responsibility and ubiquitous social monitoring, Thought Police type stuff. In a whole lot of ways, though, we already crossed that Rubicon without even realizing it...social media provides the rest of the world with a permanent record of anything you've ever put up on it, and even if you blank it, the platform still has that data.

Pushing back on that is going to be hard. As ever, you fight the war right in front of you - that's against the extreme right - and then the pendulum swings, and you're back fighting the better impulses of the far left again.

That's democracy...forever trying its perpetual balancing act.

While I tend to agree with your Orwellian prognostication, it feels like we've been trending that way for a while now, I disagree with your outlook on individual self-regulation. I firmly believe the vast majority of Americans are somewhere on the continuum between slight left and slight right. And those among that group that are active on social media (Facebook in this context) use the platform as intended. They're not using it to spread the ole Q-Rooski-dis-mis-information horse ####. Unfortunately, the few far-off-center fruit loops, including the one who penned this fine piece of "journalism", will ultimately lead to the fulfillment of your prophecy. And maybe that's not such a bad thing, right? The vast middle would be unaffected anyway. As long as it only applies to the social media platforms, I couldn't care less either way.

It's not the speech that is the issue, it is the consumption

Oct 7, 2021, 1:12 PM [ in reply to Re: they are about to circle the wagons ]

At no time in our nations history have we ever consumed so much garbage information en masse.

The supply of garbage exists because there is a demand for it. People want it. They come looking for all the answers that will comfort their myopic and distorted world views. It has become a spiraling, vicious cycle that will never end until some force of information entropy breaks us off.

The internet guarantees information assymetry, so we will always be stuck with this problem. Everyone thinks they are getting alpha-quality data when in reality, it is mostly dog-shit.

How are we going to survive this new reality when majority of brains haven't yet adapted?

I agree with them about silencing the Q nuts and the conspiracy nuts polluting this country with nonsense. That's why those idiots stormed the Capitol and attack pizza parlors etc etc etc. That said, those other idiots on the far left, hopefully they are far left and not mainstream, want to silence guys like Dave Chappelle for saying this below in his recent Netflix special. This comment supposedly "provoked outrage".

During the special, which debuted Tuesday, Chappelle says "Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact."

Re: they are about to circle the wagons

Oct 7, 2021, 4:13 PM [ in reply to Re: they are about to circle the wagons ]

Nope. It's just an access token. All it should be used for. The ONLY thing it should be used for, in fact. I'd fight tooth and nail any attempt to tie a "social credit score" to it, or make the info contained within public in any way, shape, or form.

The parameters for getting tagged should be clearly defined, and very strict. Hate speech. Proposing insurrection or violence against others. CLEAR misinformation (meaning, crap info spread because it's click-bait), or CLEAR disinformation - the stuff spread deliberately by foreign intelligence services (or dirty politicians) for political purposes. And there needs to be both clarity and a public appeals process for getting tagged.

Short of that, no.

This is how you tamp down the flood of lies pouring out of the Internet right now. You banish the liars, and hold them accountable for what they type.

It's going to happen. Otherwise we're going to eat one another. And most of us are tired of this wretched toxicity.

Good luck clearly defining “hate speech”

Oct 8, 2021, 10:06 PM [ in reply to Re: they are about to circle the wagons ]

Let alone “disinformation”.

I may be way out there but I think all speech - “hateful” or “misinforming” as someone may consider it - should be protected.

Re: Good luck clearly defining “hate speech”

Disinformation is remarkably easy. Start by banning all those who claim to be "concerned Americans" and actually aren't. A lot of them are actors from hostile foreign powers looking to p!ss us off against one another.

Find 'em, and zap 'em. Right now it's like eradicating crabgrass. The access token stops trolls like that in their tracks, and all of a sudden it's just us fellow Americans talking to one another again.

Ever noticed how much better we get along in person than we do on-line? Ever wonder why? The answer's simple: sh!t-stirrers. Some are misinformers, some are disinformers - active foreign agents working to make us hate one another.

Finding and zapping the latter is not terribly hard under an access-token system.

I am not on social media. I zapped all mine years ago, partially because of privacy concerns, partially because I'm a futurist and I got very concerned about their data-collection and targeted algorithms, and my political views seem remarkably...unchanged from where they were even 10 or 20 years ago.

A whole lot of the rest of you...have really changed. You prior selves wouldn't even recognize yourselves. A whole lot of you have become true dipsh!ts, in fact. And instantly once those demon memes are eradicated from the Internetz I think you're going to be amazed how much the conversation calms down and becomes a whole lot more rational - on both sides - again.
