It's going to be fun watching these blue areas defund policing. Then watch the law abiding working class citizens get out in droves. And most likely take their bad voting habits elsewhere, not really understanding why they left where they came from.

I've wondered how long it would take for a community go through with this. I doubt they actually go through with it but it will be interesting to see.

I've seen a lot of people in my community complain about the police practices but at the same time complaining murders haven't been solved. It's unfortunate people don't realize those things aren't mutually exclusive.

Investigating a murder and treating POC with common decency during traffic stop or any other situation, as shown to us white people, are completely different things. Investigators don’t need to abuse their populace, like many in our police who have proven to have no regard for American life.

To be fair, Democrats are often in control of low income areas so they're much more difficult to manage.

The high income areas Democrats control are often great places.

It's just you. But likely many more like you, too, presuming the same thing.
I listened to the mayor of Minneapolis on a podcast recently, and he cited the very strong employment contract with the police officers' union as protecting the discipline/removal of bad actor cops. He mentioned that this had been a struggle across several different mayors' terms. So I suppose that the strongest unions are in northern cities, where unions have a deeper history. But not all northern states are democratic.

They're not talking about getting rid of a police department. They're talking about completely revamping how the department runs and responds and reacts. Other places that have taken similar steps - i.e. community based policing, demilitarization of the every day force, advanced & continuing training on unrecognized bias, training in deescalation tactics, etc. - have reaped rewards. And they still have an effective police force.

Unfortunately this line kind of ruins it, "The improvement came as crime declined by even larger margins across the state, according to New Jersey State Police."

Similar to how gun advocates always argue that gun crime has come down since the 1990s. Obviously, crime as a whole has come down significantly since the 1990s.

Crime has come down?

I always wonder, do folks really believe that. And yes, I know your going to show me stats. And I'm going to tell you crime stats are manipulated. (Kind of like a football team that reports attendance of 60k however no one believes theres over 30k there)

Not sure how you have a far less civilized society that ever before, and think there will be less crime.

Cincy is one. Plenty more if you Google it.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/05/cincinnati-police-reform/393797/

Thing is, I understand the need for overwhelming force at certain times. Everyday patrol should not be one of them. If communities would pay for the advanced, continuous training, and actually pay cops a decent salary, they'd probably save money on lawsuits because they'd have better officers who are better equipped to avoid excessive use of force claims.

Nothing is going to be perfect, because people are involved and people are imperfect. Also, it's an inherently dangerous job. But the angry kid who just got busted with a dime bag of weed needs to be dealt with differently than the methed out wife beater who has a gun. Each situation is different, and all can be dangerous, but highly trained and fairly paid officers are better at dealing with whatever the situation is.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I see nothing wrong with that approach. I suspect most cops

Considering half of federal prisoners are in for drug offenses

and black people are almost 4 times more likely than white people to go to jail for drug possession despite similar levels of drug usage, they're probably right.

Marijuana prohibition was intentionally targeted at black and Hispanic people disproportionately from the beginning.

Re: Considering half of federal prisoners are in for drug offenses

It’s a very small percentage of the population that is in prison for drug possession. Almost everyone in federal prison is for the distribution of drugs.
