Here’s how Dabo fixes this…

We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief. This season could’ve been special, but the secret hopes of a backdoor path to the playoff by way of winning the acc in a chaotic year of college football are gone with the loss to Pitt…
Which solidifies that our historically poor offense will have changes made. Dabo has shown he’s willing to make changes, Kevin Steele, Billy Napier, but make no mistake…these guys were not Clemson alums who helped us win national titles.
This could be the toughest thing Dabo has had to do during his coaching tenure. These people are alums who are close to him daily.
There’s no easy way for him to fire these folks, which is why when you see him being loyal to them in press conferences, you shouldn’t be shocked. He was that way with Steele and Napier too.
If he’s smart he offers Tony Elliott a choice. Go for a head coaching job elsewhere, or move to another role. TE makes 2mil a year, think of the money he makes per game for what we just saw. This is going to be a tricky situation.
This move alone will determine which direction we go, the talent is here. We can’t have 5 stars and JV coaching mistakes. When Dabo hires someone it needs to be a homerun, and they need authority to change offensive staff ASAP. Caldwell, Streeter, Gresham, even Spiller…Dabo can and maybe will lobby for them, but it’s time for more accountability and standards on offense. None are immune to criticism.
That way Dabo does not have to fire these guys. They will go off and become better coaches for it.
Call me crazy, but how Dabo handles this I think decides his future with Clemson football. Continue to reign or the beginning of the end.
He will have to be extremely tactful.

You are absolutely correct. The decisions made about offensive staff will determine his legacy unfortunately.
However, I truly believe we are going to have to lose another game (or maybe two more) for him to realize it. After his VERY QUICK response tonight about staff changes when he said, “absolutely not,” I don’t think he sees it yet.
Loyalty is not a bad thing. But he’s going to have to figure out how to translate loyalty in a new way if legacy matters to him.

Yeah, Southeast I’m with you on your take. Love the OP’s thoughts on this as a way forward and I’d be relieved if it played out that way. But the overriding theme this season (on offense) has been we are painfully slow to make changes. Hard to envision a scenario where the entire offensive coaching staff is replaced at season end, even with all the savvy and tact possible.

I agree. Wholesale change seems highly unlikely.

I get your point but Dabo’s legacy has been written already. I think he will further cements that in years to come.

I’m sure Ed Orgeron was thinking the same thing two years ago.
No legacy of anyone is final until the entire book has been written. Dabo could have a 30 for 30 on being one of the best all time or one asking the question, “What happened to Dabo?”
Watershed moments can go either way. If we lose another game or two the same way we’ve lost the last two, then I think it will feel like this is that moment.

Who is going to hire Elliot as a HC? A couple of years ago maybe but not now. I think he’s going to be forced to fire him. I suppose he could demote him.
I would like to see him part ways with Streeter and bring in a great OC/QB coach. I really think we’d see a night and day difference in DJ with a new position coach.

he was aiming big. He basically turned down Tennessee last year. Big is out the window, non power 5 is very likely after the season.

I realize he won’t be a hot commodity. SC State would hire him. Maybe a pay cut but an opportunity as head coach.
Coaching is a skill, just like teaching. Tony has been a copy and paste coach for several years and he’s in over his head. He’s very smart, has his engineering degree from Clemson. He has not really formally been trained as a coach to do much more than coach running backs maybe. He could be an administrator, similar to Dabo.
Bama would hire him as an offensive assistant (pay cut) but he could learn under ex nfl coach Bill O’Brien.
He could go west coast. He would get interviews. If he went willingly Dabo would absolutely give him a great reference. Could definitely say there was adversity with youth/injuries, etc.
Or it could be a messy breakup.
I think Dabo is smarter than we think. This move could become his legacy.

Sorry. Name 1 player that played offense today who would start for Georgia, Alabama or Oklahoma? We have so many injuries and inexperienced players it is sad.

I guess “next man up” matters…until it doesn’t.
I’m not saying it’s not important (or even significant this year), but I’m also not the one who has beat my chest about playing 100 players a game and having depth and next man up language. If we don’t have depth that’s ready to play, that’s on the coaching staff. Heck, we have starters (every WR) who don’t look ready to play.

I know you're right. But how does one answer Dabo's rebuttal and a lot of posters who say, these coaches didn't all of a sudden forget how to coach...
I would answer by saying with the talent we've had and the inferior competition, coaching been easy. And I so hate to admit it. I also firmly believe it's not so much playcall etc as it is a development issue. We really haven't had to develop talent because we're so much better raw than our comp.

This is a Roster Management issue. Yes, playcalling isn't great...but when your OL Room is what our is...you got little options. Got look at TAMUs OL. Now someone, ANYONE, tell me why our OL doesn't look like that. Jimbo has been there what...four years?
SIGN MORE HS KIDS and build quality depth. If we had 7-8 more quality players on this squad--sprinkled amongst OL, LB, WR and QB...our issues wouldn't be as dire. Failure to adapt to changing landscape. Saban is great at adapting to change...he's an #######, but he doesn't let pride interfere with a decision to change course. Dabo was that way early in his career. Can he be that bold now???

Roster management is an issue but it clear we aren’t getting the best out of our talent on offense. Trent Dilfer had a scathing quote referring to the regression of T.Law and now DJU, sloppy mechanics etc. the talent is there. We’ve seen the offense regress. This is not the standard.
Look at LSU’s turnaround once they went after the right offensive coaches before they got the natty. Recall how bad they were on offense before? Those coaches left, and immediate drop off.
I think we would see a quick jump with the right chemistry on offense.
Whatever this chemistry is, it’s not working.

I agree we need to coach them up better..no doubt. That drop-off at LSU also occurred b/c they lost what 11 guys to the draft the following year. Everyone left that team.
BUT..I would counter you with this....look who is playing for you on offense. FRESHMAN QB essentially. FRESHMAN backs, several FRESHMAN WR...several OL that really shouldn't be on scholarship at CLEM (no offense to them), SEVERAL FRESHMAN OL.
That is Roster Management FAILURE.
Love Dabo, support him all day long, but if he doesn't want to use portal...you better change your philosophy and start signing more HS kids to fill these gaps with the NOW one-way street out of Clemson. We don't "hit" on everyone and we need to account for that and for kids that bail. And we need to offer slightly more kids earlier. Too many times we offer only a handful of OL, and when we don't fill our quota...we are too late offering other good OL and take a chance on a project that has no business (no offense to the kid(s)) getting a scholly at a program like CLEM.
Was watching the usuck/TAMU game tonight...look at our OL compared to TAMU's...why such a big difference when Jimbo has been there only what four years. Roster Management. It has reared its head this year and we are feeling its effects full bore b/c of 1) portal departures, 2) injuries which reveal lack of quality, experienced depth and 3) lack of elite skill to hide it.

Great points. It would be great to see on paper how many legacy scholarships / family favor scholarships are represented on the roster. We have been one of the youngest teams for a while. That trend could become wildly out of control if we keep losing to the portal.

Exactly. Our quality depth has been too low for too long. Our #1 issue IMO, is that our OL room is too small compared to our peers (Bama, uga, OSU, etc..). Zero reason for that in today's landscape

Agreed on the roster management. But we had enough talent on the field to win, today. Dabo said it’s been a freak year with injuries, 17 scholarship players out.
Going forward we definitely need more lineman and slot WR.
