The difference in Morris vs Elliott/Scott Offense

Sep 6, 2015, 5:49 PM

I think is basically window dressing and utilization of the TE.

I really felt like I was watching Clemson when I saw SMU's offense(of course our talent and depth is on another level). Maybe our guys are holding back some of the window dressing Morris used but I did notice the same thing vs Oklahoma. More WR on the field, simplified run plays...not that it's a bad thing that remains to be seen.

Maybe it's what our guys need.

All of our TE were either hurt or suspended against OK

Sep 6, 2015, 5:55 PM

why would we showcase the TE against Wofford? You think wrong, TE will be a major weapon thus year. We don't have 6 on scholarship as window dressing

I love coach morris but I never thought he was good at in game adjustments.

Agree! Morris was the worst at adjustments throughout the game. 2nd half adjustments were nonexistent.

Clemson, this year so far, is running a faster tempo....

Any idea how many plays we ended up running? I think I saw 79 towards the end on a stat line. Pretty good considering the 1st team was mostly out by the third drive haha.
I could see us averaging 85. That would be great.

I know we had 49 @ halftime....

But we kept the foot on the pedal in the 2nd half.....

The bowl game may be an outlier as Clemson had several weeks to prep Cole for one team. But I am curious to see if Scott/Elliot run an offense based on personnel that are clicking vs running a system no matter who is in.

Always felt like Chad ran Chad's offense no matter if it was Boyd or Cole or DW. He seemed to focus more on the system vs players in the system.

The Bowl game was well designed to maximize Cole.

Hope that is how Jeff and Tony coach and lead the Clemson offense.
- Set ego aside.
- Run a play 100 times in a row if the opponent can't stop it.
- Don't get cute just bc you have a cute play in the playbook.
- Don't kill momentum with a new for the sake of running a new play.
- Find the other team's weakness and keep your foot on it until they figure out how to stop Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uh, the coaches did say the offense wasn't changing...

Sep 6, 2015, 6:47 PM

Morris was preparing Scott and Elliott to take over after he left. Dabo and Morris knew he would get a job eventually, so this was planned out.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

there's always a few changes, tweaks, etc....

Sep 6, 2015, 6:50 PM

there are things Tony and Jeff want to do, that Chad didn't, and probably some stuff they want to eliminate... and those things are generally worked out, or added, over time in a situation like this

Looked very different as far as designed qb runs. Morris used it way too much. I like the Elliott/Scott O much better.

I agree in the aspect that I like the Elliott/Scott O better, but I like the read option Morris ran. On Saturday the read option wasn't a factor and only a handoff was needed. Everyone knew DW4 wasn't taking the read. I'd love to see Bryant sprinkled in on Saturday and taking the read downfield. DW4 needs to be our pocket passer, shredding defenses with his arm. Once the run is established, Bryant can do some damage down the field, and set up his arm nicely as well. He brings a true zone read option to our offense.

They've got rid of alot of unnecessay motion that lead to procedure and formation

Sep 6, 2015, 8:34 PM

penalties. Also running out of a set 3 receiver 1 tight end formation far more often. Not having to sub guys in or thinking about where they have to line up makes it easier to play fast. Elliott and Scott seem to look at it from more of a players perspective than Morris, who is always trying to out scheme with x and o's.

You can't really make a judgement at this time. You don't empty out the playbook against Wofford. Unlike recent years, Clemson is getting a couple of gimmes to start the season. Treat it like a pre-season nfl game.

SMU was more aggressive

Sep 6, 2015, 9:03 PM

Chad is way more aggressive and decisive when he doesn't have to answer to anybody about taking shots down the field or going for it on 4th down quick with tempo instead of everyone staring at each other while he argues with Dabo about punting and we have to call a timeout and lose our element of surprise. You saw none of that in the SMU game. If they went for it they did it quick and decisive and kept thier tempo advantage.

Our O was very vanilla and boring. People don't pay to see the backup QB on the 3rd series. We always call the dogs off way too early, and I'm sure we loose National credibility for it.

Unreal how much we take our foot off the gas. Just boggles my mind. Let's be nice to everybody and all get participation trophies.

You're really bitching about a 39 point win?

Sep 6, 2015, 9:08 PM

Why give Louisville film on our starters and most of our playbook when can get by with only using 20% of it?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Re: You're really bitching about a 39 point win?

Sep 6, 2015, 11:04 PM

And why unnecessarily risk injury to most of our starters when we could be giving the 2nd and 3rd string guys valuable playing time?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You're really bitching about a 39 point win?

Sep 7, 2015, 8:24 AM

Because a lot of the starters weren't starters last year. Plus, that game was a glorified scrimmage. I don't want the starters to have played 1 quarter this week, 1 quarter next week, and then all of a sudden have to play 4 tough quarters.

I don't know if you noticed, but there wasn't too much cramping going on with Clemson, unlike many of the other teams I saw on TV. I'd like to keep it that way.

Sep 6, 2015, 11:42 PM [ in reply to You're really bitching about a 39 point win? ]

I agree. And not only this, but in playing a team like Wofford, there is more to lose than win. I would love for Dabo to have let the team loose, but we are better off being sort of vanilla in a game like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

snaps to gain experience. If Watson goes down in any of the next few games we could be staring at a losing season.

Going fast on 4th down like that moron Fedora did against the chickens? Going fast doesn't guarantee success.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you think Dabo is gonna hang 100 on Wofford?

Sep 7, 2015, 11:00 AM [ in reply to SMU was more aggressive ]

He has more class than that. Getting Nick, Kelly, and many of our other backups experience is way more important than trying to blowout a SoCon team with 1/8 of our level of talent.

The only team with 1/8 of our level of talent that we SHOULD run it up on is the Coots.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

our offense was efficient and placed more emphasis on the...

Sep 6, 2015, 11:45 PM

Run... which I liked. We need to be able to set the tempo by running the ball. It takes pressure off Deshaun and it allows us to go on long, extended drives which eat clock.

One drawback of the Morris offense was a "score fast" approach... which has its downsides... namely that we couldn't control the clock as much.
