Starting to like Kirk Herbsteit more and more

Last night game comment on Lamar's mom only attending the games against Clemson. Fowler said "maybe ms Jackson should just not attend any of his games". Kirk replied "Well, just dont attend the games against the orange and purple". Also late in the 4th quarter when our backups were in which they stopped Lamar on their first possesion and our starters on D come over to congratulate them & Kirk says "I love it when the backups are in, make a stop on 3rd down and the starters are the first ones to greet them on the sideline. Thats a sign of a great culture at Clemson".

I've always liked Herbstreit. I ran into him once at the Esso Club some years ago. Great guy.
Somehow he got a rep a long time ago for being anti-Clemson but I've never seen it.

I agree. I don't know why Kirk got an "anti-Clemson" rap. I think he's always been very fair to us. Corso on the other hand...

Everyone on TV gets an anti-Clemson rep at some point

because the first time they say something remotely negative about the Tigers, everyone around here freaks out about it.

And that's free recruiting for us on national TV.

At about 2:31:00 mark or you can just click the link.
The exact quote is...
“I love to see these starters…excited from Clemson. See that. That’s a sign of healthy culture…right there. When starters are the first ones to come out onto the field to tell the young guys that don’t get a lot of reps…they love on them like that, and I love that.

I did realize the quote you posted was from your memory, so I didn't really try to catch it as a mistake or anything.
I just want to show the clip and post the exact quote for everyone to appreciate it. It's really refreshing to hear and watch.

Both announcers were speaking about the special kind of player that fits our culture. If you're a recruit with a Clemson offer, it makes an impression when those type of things are said about your program. Doest hurt with the parents either.

Kirk has been one of the only ones left to set things right over at the network, now Pollard is taking note. You'll always have the SEC homers, Booger, etc. however now they can't deny Clemson power on both sides of the ball. Kirk H. Picked us first last year to win the title. He emphasized alot on Watson, but has been a notetaker of the Clemson culture for years. Regardless of the networks spin on things, rankings, heisman pump, etc. Kirk get's it, and has had accolades for Clemson, Dabo, Venables, players, etc. and it doesn't hurt for good publicity either.

I just take these "expert opinions" with a grain of salt.
I don't get to excited or too mad about what good or bad things they're saying about Clemson because they don't matter.

Recruits and parents of recruits listen to this stuff, though, and all the positive media coverage of Clemson's culture is great for the future. If you were a mom or dad with a five-star high school prospect, would you want your kid playing for Dabo Swinney or Nick Saban?

I just think that Saban has actually done fine in his recruiting, but yes, I could see that too.
Saban's approach works for him, and Dabo's approach works for him.
The main focus of my response is mainly what the finebaums, boogers and all the other yahoos who usually fine negative things to say about Clemson.
I just don't worry about it.
They have no choice to say something nice as long as Clemson is taking care of business.

And for the record, I always thought he makes fair assessments. It does not matter what team.

I like Kirk. I think he is fair and knows his stuff. This summer I spent a lot of time on airplanes and downloaded five of our games from the last couple of years to watch. Kirk and Chris called all of them. He has seen a lot of Clemson's greatest moments.

If I recall correctly, Kirk liked Tommy Bowden, but he loves Dabo and the culture he has established at Clemson.

there were some ugly truths a few years back
Sep 18, 2017, 7:10 AM
|

and he would talk about it. people didn't always want to hear the truth. the main thing he always talked about was how every time Clemson seemed to be on the brink we would lose a prime time matchup and get knocked right back down. now that Clemson is winning big games on a regular basis, he's quick to point out how that's the culture here now. I think he's fair even if he's calling a game where we're dragging his alma mater up and down the field.

There is an enormous difference between

honestly identifying a trend where we would usually lose a game we shouldn't, versus giggling like an idiot as if Clemson was the only team that did it.
Herbstreet did the former. The rest of ESPN did the later.

He's a better man than I

I believe I can be unbiased and make fair or realistic assessments - for the most part - but I KNOW when/if it comes to my Tigers, I am always giving us the benefit of the doubt. I could NEVER be completely fair and balanced (heard that somewhere, but can't exactly recall by who or when...).
I think Kirk actually does it well ( STILL CANNOT STAND HAVING TO LOOK AT THAT O-31-0 HELMET AND UNI IN THE BACKGROUND HE SOMETIMES USES AS A BACKDROP!!!).
Another guy is Mark Packer (son of the great Billy Packer and Clemson grad), who does a show on XM espnU....

Herbsteit has committed his share of SEC pumping and...

he's disrespected Clemson intentionally and unintentionally many times while pushing ESPiN's BS. Imo, he has a choice, describe what everyone is seeing with their own eyes or look like a fool.
We tortured UL Saturday night. What could he say?
