Bowman Field where so many grand things happened at Clemson A&M, then College & now Univ.

Our 1st football team played on this site as well as the 1st marching cadets, then the Homecoming skits & displays, etc.

Today, when a Clemson Man, Woman or Fan sees that lightly rolling field they know they are home!

On March 9, 1912, Clemson defeated Wofford 56-13 in the Tigers’ first-ever home basketball game. James Erwin scored 30 points in this match. It is thought that this game too was played on Bowman Field.

there were plans to put a parking lot on it in the 70's, but

10

Jan 24, 2023, 5:46 PM

Four chem e grad students were able to stop it. Michael Lake and 3 friends were walking across Bowman in July of 72 or 73 when they noticed some little flags on the field marking off part of Bowman. After discussing it at lunch they went to the Dean's office to ask what was going on. Someone in the office told them that they were going to put a parking lot on the field because some of the older professors wanted to park closer to the academic buildings.
The friends told the administrator that they were against it and would try to stop it. The administrator told them that they were welcome to try but it was "a done deal."
The friends started calling people who they thought might have some influence on this decision including a member of the Calhoun family. They also met with the architect who drew up the plans.
The friends attended the board of trustees meeting where the parking lot item was to come up for approval. The architect was there with his plans ready to present it to the Board.
The item never came up before the board. It never has again to my knowledge.
It is definitely sacred ground.

If the architect was able to come to the Board meeting...the previous meeting with him was less than thorough.

I imagine anyone could attend the board meeting unless executive session

There should have been a better “process”

Thanks for the pics Bill!

As an AFROTC (Det 770) Cadet at Clemson, I, along with all other ROTC students, spent many hours of ‘Leadership Lab’ in formation, marching and standing inspections on Bowman Field. At the time, it was just another class and part of the process toward graduation and obtaining a commission in the USAF upon graduation.

Learning the history of Bowman Field - mostly after graduation - I feel a sense of pride knowing that I shared that place, and truly stood upon the shoulders of so many great Clemson pioneers that tread on that field before me.

I ate mushrooms junior year, climbed the big oak tree in front of Fike and fell out of the tree flat on my back and laughed for 30 mins straight. Good times!

Thanks for the beautiful picture. I marched many hours on Bowman, when Clemson was a military college.

I'm proud to say that the sculptor used my old uniform for the marching cadet at the Military Heritage Plaza. My class, '52, and 3 others built the Plaza.
