Difffence between Saban and Dabo

Jan 9, 2018, 9:05 AM

Difference was never so clearly displayed last night with the QB change. That's having guts. Dabo preaches BYOG but when the chips were down, he did not have the guts to change QBs - Hunter Johnson would have provided the needed dimension to take us to the top again. imho

Might have. It seemed to be offensive line issues

Jan 9, 2018, 9:07 AM

more so than Bryant. He was rushed on most plays.

The problem was he had the luxury of having all day to throw the ball throughout the year. We also had a run game we could go to but when we played bama they made him make quicker decision and they shut our run game down. You have to have a nfl quarterback to beat Alabama’s defense because they make you think quicker.

Re: Might have. It seemed to be offensive line issues

Jan 9, 2018, 9:13 AM [ in reply to Might have. It seemed to be offensive line issues ]

It seemed that way because the lack of a downfield passing threat allowed bama to have extra players in the box to defend the run. When the QB can't make reads at the LOS like KB you cannot beat alabama. DW was able to make those reads which forced their LBs into coverage instead of in the box blitzing. It's simple football. A good QB helps the offensive line. You guys can trash the offensive line and the RBs all you want for not blocking but it starts with KB having the skillset to make that extra blitzer a non-issue. He isn't good enough yet.

Re: Might have. It seemed to be offensive line issues

Nope, it was because Bama did not respect KB 's passing abilities at all. Stack the box, blitz and no offense line could pick them all up. It all boils down to a lack of any passing game, they just said if Clemson is gonna beat us it will be on KB's arm, did not turn out well for us. KB was okay at best all year long against lessor teams, once he got to a real team his lack of ability was apparent. If we are to return and be WRU we must field a QB that can make throws downfield, otherwise we wasted 2 five star PPQB's and should have made Fields the top priority. To those old timers claiming TL was promised we would run the QB less if he signed riddle me how one does that in our offensive scheme that predicates a QB run 1-5-20 times a game? You cannot unless the scheme changes or you are prevaricating.

15-20 times a game

This!

Jan 9, 2018, 9:47 AM [ in reply to Re: Might have. It seemed to be offensive line issues ]

Bama had 11 guys within 5 yards of the LOS all night because they knew we could not throw deep. That busts the screens, that busts the run game, that busts the entire offensive game plan.

Re: This!

Jan 9, 2018, 9:52 AM

If they had 11 guys within 5 yards of the LOS it would be easier to throw it deep, or at least deeper than the last defender. They employed the same defense they did against us last night and UGA was able to hit short passes out of the backfield, crossing routes, etc. to open up the deeper passing game.

Jan 9, 2018, 9:50 AM [ in reply to Re: Might have. It seemed to be offensive line issues ]

KB was fine throwing the ball this year, it was his reads pre and post snap that hurt us especially in the Bama game. And don't give me the crap about short throws, if you watched the game last night UGA was hitting short throws out of the backfield, across the middle, etc. The thing is Fromm is good at reading the defensive keys and getting in the right play. That was apparent last week and the first half of last night.

TL also has the mobility to run the ball 5-10 times a game, our offense was centered around the run this year but depending on the QB it doesn't necessarily have to be. The offense changed from last year to this year so why would it be unthinkable for us to do it again with a QB that has a different skill set?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I did not think KB played a particularly bad game

Jan 9, 2018, 9:08 AM

maybe he didnt pull the trigger a few times like has been the issue all year, but he made throws under duress and made plays with his feet. The INTs were not his fault, and the drops killed us

Me either...played about as well as he did all year...not bad

Some tough luck

Definitely a wall there though - to deny that is crazy

Re: I did not think KB played a particularly bad game

Jan 9, 2018, 9:15 AM

He played exactly the same as he did all year and all of a sudden people think our line is garbage. Alabama just has the coaching and skilled players to shut down a guy like Kelly. Same way we shut down JT Barrett and Lamar Jackson. 0 downfield passing threat allows the opposing team to dominate at the LoS.

There is only 1 coach in football able to pull that move

Jan 9, 2018, 9:12 AM

and that is Saban. If that move works, they win a Natty. If it doesn't, he's still the best coach in college football.

Any other coach that makes the same move is 2nd and 3rd guessed for the rest of time. Saban has the credibility to do it.

Re: There is only 1 coach in football able to pull that move

Jan 9, 2018, 9:36 AM

As IPTAY Family said, only ONE coach can do that - Saban. Just like that onsides kick against us a few years ago. It's a 50/50 shot it works, and unless you recover it you'll be second guessed forever. Saban can bench a two year starter like that, but few others can.

Who cares about credibility? Dabo has a natty in his pocket and has made it to three straight playoffs so I don't think he'd lose any credibility other than media. The same media was complaining that Dabo didn't make a change. Coaches will always be second guessed and they don't care about that stuff anyway. The BOT isn't gonna dock his pay because he took a chance on another QB. Honestly I'd rather lose knowing we tried everything we could than stick to the same gameplan with the same personnel. Had Saban not changed QBs Jawja would be the national champs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uh, the next QB that you are trying to recruit

Jan 9, 2018, 11:01 AM

Lets say the roles were reversed and 25-2 starter Fromm was sucking wind. Kirby Smart went with an untested true freshman. Every coach on the planet would be telling the next 5 star QB that UGA will pull you on the biggest stage at the first sign of adversity. Momma 5 star is going to ask, "You gonna pull my baby on national TV?"

"I did it for the team" isn't going to be a big enough answer to Momma. Saban answers those same questions with 5 rings if it backfires, or 6 rings if it doesn't.

To me, there are only 3 active coaches that have kind of swag. Saban, Bill Belichick, and Gregg Popovich.

Re: There is only 1 coach in football able to pull that move

And I would add on to this that Saban is very calculated in all the moves he makes, so it would not surprise me at all if he prepped for "plan B" (using the back-up QB) for the last month and a half (or possibly even longer). I think it's possible that if Clemson had been beating them handily we might have seen that guy come in the game.

Kelly has as much time as DW4 had, Kelly isn’t Watson. Deshaun had a burning desire to make plays, KB wants to Act like cam Newton, and Doesn’t play fearless like DW does. I think a change may have helped, not sure. The wideouts weren’t helping and Renfrow was being mugged all night. Truth is, our offense didn’t match the intensity that was in front of them.
GO TIGERS!

I guess you turned the Miami game off after it was a foregone conclusion that we would win. IMHO I believe that Johnson's performance against an Alabama defense would have been somewhat similar to that one.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

There is also 18 years of age difference between the two.

Jan 9, 2018, 9:44 AM

At age 48, Dabo has already accomplished more than Saban did at 48. At 48, Saban had only 6 years of head coach experience with a 43-26-1 record. Dabo has been a head coach for 9.5 years and has a 101-30 record. Saban at the 10 year head coach mark had an 82-39-1 record.

Dabo is not Saban (thank God), and has proven he is already on his way to being a hall of fame coach. Like all of us, Dabo will continue to learn and grow but should we be lucky enough to have Dabo at Clemson when he turns 66 (Saban's age), he will be among the best head college football coaches to have ever walked the sideline.

Most teams don't have a backup qb like Bama did that can perform like that in a championship game

That last throw was a professional throw by a true freshman

Bama is loaded and it sucks
