The silence from Clemson and the ACC is deafening. The last go round of expansion, they were QUICKLY stamping out rumors and meeting to ensure solidarity. They have said very little and done nothing publicly this time. Something is up. Dabo's recent comments are a clue.
I think they will try EVERYTHING to make this happen, or risk falling apart.

The best thing about this video is the talk about the non-sec conferences coming together and keeping the playoffs at 4.

This would REALLY stick it to the SEC. I think other conferences are tired of their BS. Go head Texas and Oklahoma - play an SEC schedule and see what your chances to get into a 4 team playoff system are now? Texas thought that they had it ruff before, who in the heII would coach there now?

They aren't getting played. They will get a full share of SEC money right away which will give them a big advantage over just about every non SEC program in the country. Saban won't be around for too many more years then the SEC will be wide open. Until then why not get into the new 12 team playoff as an SEC also ran? It'll be much easier than having to win the Big 12 to get into the top 4. Its not a coincidence that this is happening right as playoff expansion has become a near certainty.

I think expanding the CFP is foregone conclusion...
Jul 29, 2021, 11:11 AM
[ in reply to Re: It's Happening!!!!! ] |

The question now becomes, does it expand to 8, 12 or 16?
I certainly don't have a vote but if it was up to me, I'd go with 8. The five Power 5 conference champions would be automatic qualifiers followed by three at-large spots to be determined by the CFP which would give the Group of Five programs and Notre Dame an opportunity to get in.
This past season that would have been:
Clemson Bama Ohio State Oregon Oklahoma
The three at-large bids would likely have gone to:
Notre Dame Texas A&M Cincinnati

Personally I’d rather see the top 6 get in with a caveat. No automatic bids and each conference gets at most 2 teams in. I don’t trust the product the Pac12 or Big 12 put on the field each year. The last 10 years each team thats won the PAC 12 has had at least 2 losses. That doesn’t sound like a playoff team to me. I say 6 so teams are trying to get the 1 or 2 seed and get a first round bye.

Trying not to over-complicate it...

I'm concerned the CFP is going to grossly over-analyze this thing to the point where it becomes ridiculously complicated or subjective where the CFP ultimately retains the power to pick and choose who they want to "let" in.
I am a firm believer in the acronym KISS - Keep It Super Simple.

Go ahead and expand to eight teams, but with one BIG caveat! No more than two teams from anyone conference. The rest of the P%, besides the SEC, really needs to stick together on this! Let the big, mighty SEC fight it out for a max of two spots, and see how they like that!
To me, it's a no-brainer!

Funny how one poster who rarely posts on here actually broke the TX-OK news before most of the press, ans he got totally skewered here. He turned out to be right. I am going to take the same dismissive approach to this "breaking news" and hope it garners the same result.

ND and the ACC need to convince PSU that they can match the $$ PSU is receiving from the BIG. If so, I think the ACC could pull this off. First, most PSU grads consider their school to be an Eastern school - not Midwest. Most of PSU's alums reside in the vast ACC footprint. Second, as indicated in the podcast, PSU HATES being in the same division as OSU, Mich and Mich St. While in this division, they've never made the playoffs and they think of themselves as a playoff team. In the ACC, they would see their path as much easier.
What the ACC also needs to do is make sure none of its teams are sniffing the SEC. On this front, I worry the most about FSU, which doesn't have as much loyalty to the ACC as does Clemson. Because if it looks like teams are looking towards the SEC, then schools like UVA, UNC, Duke and Ga Tech (AAU universities) will start exploring options of joining the BIG as we saw in 2010.

Convince PSU- How about a guarantee? They get money out of the pot equal to the current Big Ten take before the others split revenue?
I'd like the same for Clemson, obviously. Maybe Wake and others need to face facts- they are not carrying the weight and need to give up some $.

How are we going to convince them they can make as much money? The B1G and the SEC are in a completely different stratosphere in terms of what they pay out. I certainly can’t imagine the TV contract increasing by $250 million just because of Penn St and ND.

They do?
Been a VT fan for the better part of my 63 year existence, and to my knowledge, we have never played PSU in football. We have played them in basketball a couple of times due to the BIG/ACC challenge, but that is the extent of it.
Had them on the schedule when all the scandal broke a few years ago, but that went away. I do believe they are on our schedule already several years down the road.

Penn State has played Louisville four times.
Clemson has only played Penn State once, and that was the 1988 Citrus Bowl beat down with Clemson winning 35-10.
That said, Penn State has a won a lot of games, and would be a great addition to the ACC.

I get that these are all just rumors, but a conference with the following brands would have tremendous market potential. Contracts would be re-written, and this slate of brands would bring alot of cash:
Notre Dame Penn State Clemson Florida State Miami North Carolina Virginia Tech
That's a strong top-7. Throw in frequently competitve GT, Virginia, Pitt, BC, Louisville, and NC State, and that is a solid football league with some very valuable top-end brands.

And ESPN would love it and would redo the ACC contract with ND and PSU in it.
It would be a double whammy of getting ND into the ESPN fold and hurting Fox as well.
If the Big 12 dissolves, ESPN saves $1B there. Combing the Longhorn and SEC network, again saves money.
Split that with a new ACC contract which brings us up to par (likely tiered for high performing teams) and you're looking at something workable.

As a VA native, I'm really surprised by the respect that VaT gets as a football team. The VaT team was very good with Mike Vick at QB for three years. And that's about it. UVA had to sign off on letting VaT in the ACC (under pressure from the VA governor at the time) or similar to the situation Louisville was facing, VaT would have been dead as an independent.

If the rest of the conferences would just stick together, the CFP could be expanded to eight teams, with a max of two from any one conference! Other than the money grab, the main reason to expand the playoff is to include all regions of the country! You don't do that by going to a 12 team playoff, with 6 or 7 of them coming from the SEC.
Why do you think the SEC's Skanky is so in favor of a 12 team playoff? So the SEC can have 6 or 7 of the participants!! The greedy ######## have no concern for the good of college football, they just want to fatten their own pockets!
Put a stop to that crap now...limit it to no more than 2 per conference and listen to the SEC squeal! The rest of the conferences need to grow some balls and stick together, for the good of college football!

If the ACC gets Penn State and Notre Dame, what makes them different from the SEC? Both will have 16 teams in their conference. Nationally, most of the major conferences are not in favor of the SEC plan.

Interesting video. They talk a lot about AAU but were wrong on a couple of points. Notre Dame is not an AAU member and they keep talking about 4 ACC teams in the AAU (UNC, UVA, Duke, Ga Tech) but leave out the University of Pittsburgh, which is also an AAU member institution.

I don't understand why PSU would come to the ACC, as they'd likely take a pay-cut.
Doesn't seem feasible.
And ND is hell-bent on being an independent. That won't change anytime soon.

Obviously the TV contract would need to be reworked to increase the payouts, and PSU might prefer ACC over B10 due to more eastern schools vs Midwest and the perception is that the route to a conference championship would be easier.
