Power 5 Conference Re-alignment....

Oct 28, 2019, 10:40 AM

Who here thinks we will see major/minor changes to the Power 5 Conferences when the current contracts expire in the next few years.

I think the Big 12 contract ends in 2023. I was never a huge fan of the ACC picking up WVU before. Now that UMD left for the B1G, and the ACC picked up Louisville, WVU makes ALOT more sense to me then it did 6-8 years ago.

Also, if ND is ultimately forced to join the ACC, we would need that 16th member.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

IF ND joins, it's Navy.

Oct 28, 2019, 10:46 AM

Nd has been given that choice to entice them and they'll want to keep Navy.

Re: IF ND joins, it's Navy.

Oct 28, 2019, 10:59 AM

I just don't see Navy joining the $$$$ of a power 5 conference. Wouldn't be equal to the other military schools Army and Air Force.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The ACC has no desire to add Navy. That would be idiotic.

Unless the powers that be want the ACC to become even worse in football and every other sport. I don't think they're that stupid.

Respect Navy, but no thank you.

If anything, I’d like to go back to 9. This expansion has not helped football or basketball

The 16th member should be Penn State...

Oct 28, 2019, 10:48 AM

but if they elect to remain in the BIG, I'd prefer WVU over some of the other programs that have been suggested (i.e., Cincinnati, UCF, Navy, etc.).

I will take Vilanova over WVU... heck, even UCONN

Rather have another southern school not another school close to Canada.

WVU ain't southern.... they are just rural Ohio with more meth

At least it's South of UConn,Syracuse and BC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's just what we need...

Oct 28, 2019, 11:33 AM [ in reply to Re: The 16th member should be Penn State... ]

another basketball school from the northeast.

Would Penn State want to leave the B1G?

Penn State must be made to say "no" 3 times. ND and Penn State is a homerun.

Before you get on a WVU bandwagon..

One Saturday drive up to Morgantown...wear the opposing teams jersey and see how you are abus..I mean treated. Thay will quickly change your mond.

There is NO WAY...

it can be any worse than trips to Georgia, NC State or uof5c.

Re: Power 5 Conference Re-alignment....

This isn't only about football--basketball figures into the equation significantly, too. Other sports probably not so much.

Academics is huge, too, and that's why I would say WVU will never get in to the ACC. That is, unless they hugely and permanently improve their academic profile.

Louisville was a big stretch academically. I think they got in as a bridge to ND, because of their basketball rep, and because Charlie Strong had them knocking on the door of elite in football.

Re: Power 5 Conference Re-alignment....

Oct 28, 2019, 11:19 AM

Academics doesn't carry much weight like in the old days. WVU, a former Southern Conference member like us, is the logical choice. Southern, big crowds, great basketball a bridge to the norther members.

Re: Power 5 Conference Re-alignment....

Oct 28, 2019, 11:35 AM

Might not for other conferences, but don't the university presidents have to approve new members? They've historically (except for Louisville) been pretty careful about a potential member's academic rep.

Even so, if Louisville hadn't had its boatload of scandal, I'd be inclined to say you're probably right. But ND is now in the fold. UCF is lower-ranked academically than WVU. CT has had its share of scandal. I predict that the next school in will be Cincinnati--competitive in both major sports, a good academic rating, opens up Ohio to the ACC, and no scandal on the horizon (that I know of).

Not that I think that's going to happen, at least not soon. Just, if a new school is admitted, I think it will likely be Cincy. Which I personally would welcome. 'Cause it isn't all about football.

Re: Power 5 Conference Re-alignment....

Oct 28, 2019, 11:39 AM

In the old days you had to have really good grades to get into any ACC school. Those days are gone if we are going to be honest so I don't see how academic ratings mean much. Oh, and WVU is a historically great basketball power. Thus, in my opinion, they would be best. Another state instead of a city. Ha.

Probably need to send Scar to ACC and Clemson to the SEC since we seem to be the only SC team capable of handling it.

I have zero desire to add West Virginia

Oct 28, 2019, 10:49 PM

I don’t think they are a good academic or cultural fit for the ACC. I would much much rather have Notre Dame and Penn State. I’d take Cincinnati over WVU as well. Heck, I’d take UConn over WVU, but I would admittedly have concerns over the Huskies being able to hang in football (or lately, men’s basketball too).

While I like Navy as a service academy and excellent school, they don’t belong in the ACC. There is no way they could compete in football or men’s basketball. Quite frankly, I’m baffled as to why I see them mentioned so often here. How on earth would a service academy be a good fit in the ACC other than academically?

It’s because Notre Dame will only join acc if its with navy. They owe a “debt of honor” to Navy for keeping them afloat during the war. They repay this by playing them every year in football. Google it, it made me hate ND a little less.
