There is 1 thing driving CFB playoff expansion

Jan 14, 2022, 8:53 PM

And that’s ESPN money.

They are offering $1-2 BILLION to expand the playoffs. Leagues awarded multiple playoff teams will benefit significantly.

And if there is no limit on number of teams per conference,

the SEC will only distance itself further from everyone else. The alliance needs to stand firm...no more than 25% of playoff participants from any one conference!

The playoff $ as it is designed today is largely split

Jan 14, 2022, 9:16 PM

among the conferences(all P5 get equal shares of the big pot whether they send 0,1,3, or even 4 teams). The amount the participants get are the equivalent to the gator/Cheezit type payments. Which above expenses goes back to those teams conferences for redistribution. No additional payouts other than expenses are given for making the championship.

But yes $ is driving it but it’s certain conferences

That see their share increasing exponentially whether they send teams or not. Note- the G5 gets a share it has to split among all G5 conf and there are some other smaller distributions as well

That may be the way the current playoff is set up, but who has a crystal ball to tell us how the expanded playoff will be set up?

It isn't nearly that simple

Jan 14, 2022, 10:44 PM

It has been mentioned the other four Power 5 conferences (besides the SEC) will insist ESPN not have a monopoly over all the games.

You are way off that $1-2 Billion dollar figure.ESPN would never offer that kind of money.
On the other hand eSECpn has plenty to gain, like more SEC teams in that expansion.

You are confidently incorrect

Conversations in Indianapolis stated otherwise. Here are some independent sources also confirming amount
