Clemson FB being #1 three straight yrs will be the #1 reason Coots

Dec 9, 2017, 5:23 PM

get their fb program back up to decent win levels on a yearly basis (even though this years record was padded by weak opponents) since the rivalship competition with us is equally paramount to what's important to their program's (outside the SEC).

Saying..we have destroyed them & we will unwillingly rescue them, over the next 5 years imho.

I wouldn't count on it Bill.

Dec 9, 2017, 5:26 PM

I think we will likely cause them to change coaches every couple of years in a desperate attempt to close the gap.

Is was surprising how they had a shot in 1984 so soon after

Dec 9, 2017, 9:05 PM

our 1981 National Championship, because they've sucked since forever. They were all roided up and finally ended up a feature in Sports Illustrated in 1988, but at least they TRIED. I think that's what LBB means. They are as pathetic at cheating as they are at football, but they will try. Go Navy!

Any examples where that was the case for rivals?

Dec 9, 2017, 5:31 PM

When USC was on their run UCLA stayed bad. When Oregon has those good years, I can’t remember Oregon State doing much.

Maybe we are the only example of this. It took scu rolling off 5 straight to get us back to the mountain top.

I think the post above about changing coaches is one good reason the rival teams often stay down. When you're too focused on what someone else is doing, then it can mess with what you have going on. It's one thing to try and model after some of the things another successful program is doing, but it's another to cycle through coaches in a desperate attempt to find the right one instead of allowing them to build their program.

Yes,

After the gamecocks beat Clemson 56 to 20, Clemson said never again and IPTAY gave the football team everything it needed. A few years later Clemson won its 1st natty.

Exactly.

Dec 9, 2017, 6:05 PM [ in reply to Re: Any examples where that was the case for rivals? ]

Clemson wisely did not waiver on Dabo just because the coots were winning. Fortunately for us the coots built a house of cards with oversigning, elicit benefits and a drunk coach whose #1 goal was to stroke his ego. Meanwhile Dabo was building a juggernaut the right way. We have reached a higher standard than they will likely ever attain to.

Ronald Reagan did to the former Soviet Union. They’re now $238,000,000.00 in debt trying to keep up with Clemson facilities now they’re out of money and can’t issue anymore debt, one more big football facilities upgrade by Clemson will sink coot u......... ????

program, and this has been true throughout their history: location...sitting right in the middle of Columbia...full of politicians who have consistently meddled and interfered.

Even long time Gamecock supporters have agreed over the years, and they see little hope. Thus, the program may reach certain levels of success, but it will always be hampered by the meddlesome know-it-alls behind the scene.

All of which, no doubt, is good for us! lol

There best recruits must come from in-State ... they need

Dec 9, 2017, 8:17 PM

They need regular 2-3 year periods when the Palmetto State produces several 5-star and high 4-star kds who grew up SCAR fans ... something that hasn’t happened since the Clowney class. And even though they had Xavier Thomas available this year, they couldn’t snag him ... and they aren’t getting kids like Deshaun Watson nor Trevor Lawrence from Georgia. Dakereon Joyner is only theirs because we wouldn’t recruit him as. QB. They’re recruiting at a very average level right now and they won’t get any better until, that changes. It’s a straight fact that Joyner is the only guy on their commitment list for 2018 who holds a Clemson offer and that was as an athlete, not a QB.

Re: Clemson FB being #1 three straight yrs will be the #1 reason Coots

Dec 10, 2017, 10:25 AM

I will have to respectfully disagree with you Bill. With Dan Mullen’s going to Tenn, and Quality hires at Florida, Arkansas and UGA it’s going to be tuff for the coots to have a winning record consistently if they have one at all. The days of beating Tenn, Fla, Arkansas and UGA maybe over. Those have been big wins for the coots the last few years Spurrier was there because their programs were really down. But all that changed with the new coaching hires.

The only way for SC to eventually compete at a higher level is to blow up WB and build a new stadium, clean up areas around a new stadium, create a college like village environment around the school that is within walking distance, 5 points want do it. Then they are going to have to figure out away to keep the alumni who are now state legislators out of football business.

Dabo came in and quietly got the jump on everybody by building Clemson into an elite program. I think some coaches thought Dabo was a flash in the pan but now they have figured out he is the new standard. Clemson and Dabo have a big jump on everybody but Bama. They are on an equal playing field with Bama. Bear Bryant did for Bama what Dabo has done for Clemson. Set up a program for success and consistency. Recruits are now contacting Clemson where in the past we had to fight for 1 5 star and 2 or 3 4 stars. Now we consistently get several 4 and 5 star athletes. We have subs that would start for most teams.

Oklahoma hit a homer in by hiring a young energetic coach in Lincoln Riley who relates well with the players and is an excellent coach.

Coaches like Dabo, Dan Mullen and Lincoln Riley and Mark Richt are the new standard. If Saban was not at Bama he would be as successful at another school. And Out of all of the above mentioned coaches, IMO Dabo is the one who set the standard and had the vision to take Clemson to Elite status. It is also going to take a lot of $$$$$ to keep those standards at an Elite level.

I just don’t think SC has the resources or the HC and staff to change coot football. For the last 6 to 8 years the college football landscape has been changing and your program must be flexible and grow as the sport changes or your program will be on the outside looking in.

IMO it was a big mistake hiring Spurrier who was nearing the end of his career. The got 4 maybe 5 good years from him. But in the long run he really set the program back and they really had no back plan when he left. I am not sure if SC will ever catch Clemson or be relevant in the SEC East with all of the new coaches hired in the SEC East and Chad Morris at Arkansas.

To make a move to the top you need either great coaching or great recruiting. We have both. I honestly don't see the chickens having either one of these.

Earlier discussion about Mr. Football awardees is pertinent

Dec 10, 2017, 2:50 PM

The best years of the SCAR program coincided with the fact that for three straight years, "Mr. Football" in SC was a born and raised SCAR fan and the guys winning the award were actually not only the best players in the state, they were national recruits to boot.

By and large, SC "Mr. Football" winners have been pretty irrelevant after high school. The few notable exceptions to this rule have helped SCAR to rise above historic mediocrity if only for a short while.

As long as there are no Stephon Gilmores, Marcus Lattimores, and Jadaveon Clowneys coming out of Palmetto State high school programs, SCAR's chances of getting to a high level are slim.

Dakereon Joyner is a good athlete, but he's no top national recruit like those mentioned.
