Obed and other carphiles.

Opinions on Cooper Minis?

I've got to buy my daughter another car (her brother totaled it). There seem to be a lot of Minis for sale and they are even lower milage on average. My daughter likes them, but I'm leary for unknown reasons. Maybe just due to so many for sale at reasonable prices and lower mileage makes me assume something must be wrong with them.

Why do mentions rarely work?

I agree - the process seems really fussy most of the time.***

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

it's ranked as a slightly less than average vehicle for reliability, and repair costs are higher than average. I also think they have some less than stellar safety data, but this is all off the top of my head as an avid Consumer Reports reader. The only reason I looked at all was that the Mrs. rented one on a trip many years ago. I'd have to look at the data again to be sure, but it sticks with me that they weren't impressive in that regard. I do remember it being fun to drive for a few days though.

That seems to be what I'm reading.

But not sure if there is possibly a balance to paying a bit less and having lower mileage.

RH Tig and CA nailed it.

Unreliable and expensive to fix, sometimes even within warranty.

The BMW of today and the early 2000's are two completely different animals. Obed®has mentioned previously the "green initiative" that BMW undertook being simultaneous to when their quality went to crap. I don't know about that; I was never enough of a BMW fanboy to watch their degradation line. But I do watch a lot of youtube car repair channels, and it's easy to see which cars are being worked on most and what they require.

When you start making cars that are known for needing new connecting rod bearings at 60-80k miles(Looking at you, BMW), or like the Mini needs an engine removal for new seals that go bad pretty much on a schedule, or have superchargers that go out and essentially total the car, I'd look away...quickly.

I used to own a 2004 mini. My wife used to always complain about trucks tailgating her, and I thought it was just her being overly sensitive.

Then I got a call that freaked me out when she was hit by a plumbing truck from behind at 35 mph and was pushed head-on into a an Oldsmobile. She walked away from it, in better shape than most and the car's design had a lot to do with that.

In general with used cars, my best advice I've heard was to budget around $2,000 for future repairs.

I spent the last month shopping for a used car and it is out of control. Way too many high mileage money pits are going for over $20k. What is telling though, is the used electric market. I was ready to plop down $20k for a used Ioniq, and it's like they don't exist anymore. All those 2016-2019 low-end electric cars have been snapped up.

The good news is that insurance is paying close to what I

paid for it in 2016 (it's a 2012). The bad news is that it would cost me more than I paid for it originally to buy the same car. Car prices are just crazy.

Insurance companies have a bad reputation for lowballing us on totaled cars, even in a good car market. Now it feels twice as bad.

I was surprised, after I went to four different dealers looking for cars I finally had luck on Facebook marketplace. It was a daily slog for about two weeks on there, but I found one.

I had one as a rental car. It sucked big old bawlz.

Reliability of a modern BMW engine, and manufacture it in Brazil. Double down on it if she gets a CVT model instead of a stick.

I’m a gambler with cars who doesn’t mind getting my hands dirty, and I’d only buy a mini for my kid if it had a long warranty.
