Culture Folks, Culture

I have said it on here multiple times, Dabo has built a culture that is "counter" everything that is going on in the SPFL (SEMI PRO FOOTBALL LEAGUE). You are either on board or not. Everybody talks about "but Bama is still successful, but Georgia look what they are doing" the cultures at both of these schools have always been garbage and the system now better fits the garbage no different than the way the World works today we reward the garbage.

So buckle up buttercups the transfer portal will always be a one-way door in this culture. I for one am incredibly proud of the culture Dabo has built and can sleep well with the Championships we have won the "right" way.

But the sad fact is going forward the choice will come down to Culture vs Championships. The road for Dabo's Tigers has gotten incredibly more difficult.

Then I hope you’ve enjoyed this season.

Because this is how it will be unless/until Dabo adapts.

Bama's culture isn't some craphole. I know a walk-on there and he loves it.

Oh, BTW, here is BAMA with 20 OL room

Bama has a great culture because they are very upfront about it being cutthroat.

No kid comes to Bama and is shocked to be asked to leave if he isn't measuring up to the level of play from the rest of the guys at his position.

This would not apply to your walk-on friend because he isn't wasting a scholarship that they want to give to another player so his spot is likely very safe as long as he is fulfilling his role in practice.

Great culture is largely built around treating everyone in the program the same and being very consistent about how you treat the players from one day and season to the next.

Bama covers both of those areas very well. They expect a high level of performance from each person in their specific role and they are unwilling to accept anything less than that high level of performance from anyone.

The transfer portal doesn't really matter if you recruit high character, highly recruited/top notch talent. I think the "real" issue this year is the fact that we have had 2 back-to-back generational QB's that masked some of the weaknesses/flaws that our team has had over the past couple of years. It was clear that even TL struggled a bit when we went against OSU and LSU the last 2 seasons.

Dabo IS recruiting high character and high talent.......we still lose 7-9 players/year to the portal, which honestly is on the lower side compared to a lot.

It's VERY SIMPLE MATH

-player leaves and that opens a schollie for the next year

-Dabo has 3 options:
1. give schollie to a walk-on the following year (or mid year of the same year and not take him off the following year b/c he doesn't have the heart)

2. backfill bodies in the next recruiting class.....problem there is 2-fold.....you're going to be "young" every year if that's all you depend on.......Dabo already sends out very limited/small amount of offers so any additional offers we'll be "late to the party" and likely not be getting "elite talent"

3. Utilize the portal to bring in some player replacements.......Dabo refuses to do this b/c in his mind ALL transfers are character problems........whether he says that or not, that is his though process.

flag link

While I agree in part...

Nov 9, 2021, 1:02 PM

I don't think you can reasonably assert that Dabo's reluctance to use the transfer portal is because he thinks all transfers have character problems.

First of all, Dabo isn't that judgmental and second, he has never said anything that would even remotely support that contention.

Ultimately, I think his preference, right or wrong, is to bring in his own players and develop them from within the program, which is fine, but the transfer portal definitely changes that paradigm and the number of injuries the team has sustained only exacerbates the problem.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

No, the portal CAN'T be the "foundation" of the program, but

[1]
Nov 9, 2021, 1:08 PM

it has to be utilized.

like I said Dabo hasn't said as much, but that's why he's reluctant to do it........he doesn't want to "upset" the culture. He views the guys who committed to him out of HS as "ALL IN".

flag link

As I have said before, Dabo should talk to Brad about this.

Nov 9, 2021, 4:03 PM

Transferring in basketball was a "thing" before it was in football, and as a result our basketball program has had to deal with it sooner.

Brad has had to deal with losing players to transfer (sometimes multiple players in an offseason), and has also used the transfer market to bring in talented players who have helped us win. By any metric, the players we have brought in via transfer have been a significant upgrade over those we have lost to transfer.

In addition to the on-court success these transfer players have contributed to, those guys have also been part of a program that has set records for APR and team GPA, while also being excellent citizens in the community. In other words, they are proof that bringing in transfers does not have to harm the culture of the program, and can even enhance it.

Re: YES IT DOES matter....

Also keep in mind that scouting the transfer portal takes time and resources away from other recruiting. I bet some of the Simmons etc type would get lost.

I much rather poach the best talent out of HS and have the contribute earlier in the development than rely on the portal.

Everyone will say that Burrow or Fields came out of the portal... and that there is talent in the portal. That is true but the *best* talent rarely transfers. TL didn't. DW4 Didnt.

What about Baker Mayfield? Murry? Well A kid name Mahommes was incoming for Baker. Murry had Kyle Allen to deal with in a sloppy QB situation (Allen was later injured).

The problem kind of solves itself.

SEC programs were running off kids who wouldn't contribute.

Now, kids are running themselves off.

Bring in larger classes and expect the attrition to take care of itself.

You can bring in more guys knowing that the ones that aren't going to play leave.

It does make it harder to develop backups who will play significant minutes as Jr and Sr but that's just the way it is now.

2022 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link

I think we should "lightly" use the transfer portal....

Nov 9, 2021, 1:28 PM

like BAMA and bring in a few (1-2 each year) to fill known holes. But if Dabo wants to continue to avoid that (I think that's OK too)...you better start signing more HS kids...and offering a bit more kids earlier.

transfer somewhere else.

In the past, I laughed at the idealism here which stated that Dabo would never have an issue losing players to transfer. While that's a nice idea, it's foolish thinking.

If you're a highly touted player, you want to play. If you aren't getting to play, you are naturally going to look for greener pastures. As special as Clemson is, it isn't for everyone, and it certainly isn't perfect enough for a star player to stick around when things aren't going as planned.

I agree 100% with the part of your post about coaching deficiencies/flaws. That has to be addressed.

Culture always wins. That is the long game between a successful program and a successful "year".

If you want to look at what loose culture can do... I won't say it does not have an upside but the downside is far, far worse.

Are you suggesting that Ed O.{HC @LSU} has a more stable program than Dabo? At this time, I think you would have a real issue in showing that to be true. LSU was built for 1 season and they got it. How many SEC FB titles will they get in the next 5-8 years? Maybe they select a great new HC and get their program on a straight course to future success. They have their work cut out for them in the mix with Bama. UGA, Auburn, A&M; plus Texas and Oklahoma down the road.

??? I think you misread my point -cheers - "loose culture" is the reason they failed (or at least could not sustain anything). Sure in the "best case" scenario, you might have the LSU run, but the downside is the coots and never having a run nor a program

This is the typical ignorant post I'd expect from TNet.

If this is your mindset, I hope you're prepared for 8-4 season. The portal is here to stay whether you like it or not. It makes absolutely no sense to watch other programs improve their team immediately by grabbing a kid out of the portal while we just sit there and watch.

Also, Saban has built a great culture at Alabama. You have no idea what you're talking about.

I wish it was that simple... that part of the culture can

[2]
Nov 9, 2021, 1:13 PM

also adapt to new rules. There is a two-way revolving door at most schools. I hope we are not going to continually only have an exit door. I'm pretty sure we could hand pick who we'd want to come to Clemson if it was generally known that we accepted transfers. I'm not saying this should be how we build the majority of our lineups on a year to year basis. But we hopefully aren't known as a hard "NO" for those seeking another school.
