The young AD makes his first public mistake

If CBB has not been the right coach for the past 12 years, getting into the dance next year is not going to make him the right coach. It will be a costly aberration as it has been before.
My guess is GNeff has developed a friendship with CBB over the years and just wanted to let CBB fire himself in the hopes CU won't make the tourney next year.
So, the most likely scenario is CU will have a new coach this time next year, but, we will have squandered a year of rebuilding.
If you recall.. Dabo didn't mess around in bringing in his folks from the get go.

Not a mistake in my opinion. A well played chess match. The chess piece is on Brownell's side of the board now.

I am sorry, but that is simply not an acceptable analogy. In the game of chess when you have the clear moves to Checkmate, you don't delay to see if the opponent will self declare Checkmate for you? 12 years of Ineptitude is too much! Young Mr Neff should ask the question? Will Clemson Nation forgive more easily for the buyout Now? or will Clemson Nation forgive him for wasting another year and costing us 3 years before a turnaround occurs? Wise old saying "Don't put off to tomorrow what can be accomplished Today!

If it happens, it has got to be before April, because the buyout goes up a lot by then.

I don't think the total buyout goes up. The monthly goes up, but with fewer months remaining. If the total goes up for KEEPING the coach, then Clemson needs a new lawyer.
Buyouts came into being to protect the coach.. as monthly salary is paid out, the risk to the coach diminishes each month.

So from what you are saying, Brad probably should just resign? It is not on your resume that you resign rather than getting "fired". You see coaches do it all the time. It would be like a mutal decision that both parties want to go their separate ways. Brad wants to take time off and maybe persue other opportunities later and because of this Clemson wants to pursue other options? Now, the buyout still is proceeded with toward Brad, but his reputation stays in tact. Is that what you saying will probably happen?

Not a mistake unless you have a hungry, proven coach waiting in the wings who is a great recruiter and can attract talent to Clemson. If there were no good options right now then you have no choice but to stand pat one more year and work like crazy over the next 12 months to develop a strong candidate list to deal a year from now if next year's team doesn't make it to the big dance. I think he made it very clear that there is some work to be done and some investments to be made in order to attract that kind of coach to Clemson. In my opinion, he showed good judgment and maturity rather than making an emotional decision that might have just turned into another big mistake down the road.

If someone is on the hot seat they generally do have an idea who they might want to go after based on potential availability and fit. I know that Shaka Smart has been someone that has been floated as a potential target and type of person that might be a great fit.

We are replaying the same movie. Give him another chance but if he don’t do this or that we will let him go for sure this time. Meanwhile you fans just shut up and send money. Outside of good luck here and there we have had very few ADs that know a good coach when they are looking at him in the face??

Brad is not the coach for Clemson. All we are doing is prolonging the situation. People think after 12 years he is all of a sudden going to turn the program around. Its ridiculous. So he makes the tourney next year then what? We are stuck with him for even longer.
The only reason the decision to keep him makes sense is simply keeping Brownell for financial reasons.
That is it.

Agree Financial is the biggest motive. But also PJ Hall is a big fan of Brownell and he is arguably the best player Clemson has had in 20 years or so.

That is why you never bring someone back because of a star player coming back. One injury or incident away from that benefit flushed down the drain. Ok. Maybe 4 of them because most likely three will have no problems, but not just 1...

Just how deep into the tournament would you think would make this the right decision? I don’t think Graham is ready to cheat. Unlike Some other hires so far this year. Maybe if Calipari goes out first round next year he will want to come to Clemson. Try his luck in the ACC.

Bottom line...if there is a thought that you should write a letter for or against a coach who's been the head coach of any program and/or department at any university for 12 years...the obvious decision is to hire someone else...and it's kinda pathetic that you actually wrote a letter...just do your job...you were hired to do a job...do it...you don't have to explain publicly...you will either be good at your job over time and remain or not and get fired yourself!!!
Do you need to talk to some big donors and especially big donors who really like basketball??? Of course...but write a letter...pfff...comes Off as very weak and seeking approval of your decisions imho...do your job...the masses will let you know if you're doing good or not!!!

Much of this year's team returns. When the success comes next year, the lunatic fringe is really going to be pissed off. But no matter the situation, some will never give up trying to fire CBB. Just give it a rest.

Absolutely. It’s sad to think there’s a chunk of posters who will be actively rooting against the team next year. The kids and the coaches deserve better. I’m fine with the challenge the AD put out there, and I’m also fine with the AD being challenged to provide the resources for the program to be more successful. Given PJ Hall’s talent and potential, I think this could be a very different conversation we’re having in two years. Let’s root for that.

I'm giving Neff the benefit of the doubt here.
Mar 20, 2022, 10:30 AM
|
|
|
As many have pointed out along the way, it would be something of a stretch for a new AD, no matter his prior time in service, to replace a revenue sport's leadership during his first months at the helm, barring some type of collapse, which didn't occur.
Based on what he shared in his letter, I get the sense that Neff feels that the program needs a little more infrastructure in place to attract the right kind of leadership than exists today, and that having a full year of work ahead to implement more of his vision here that we would be in a better position then to attract the type of candidate that can see us over the top. I don't believe he trusts the existing apparatus.
I didn't see weakness there. I saw commitment to basketball, and a belief in himself to improve our fortunes there over the longer term, starting this offseason.
Go Tigers.

Is recruiting. You can bet competitors are telling recruits that Clemson's AD wrote this about Brad on the hot seat and why go there with a new coach in a year or so...
