The ultimate slam dunk proof of UofSC football futility.

May 27, 2020, 5:09 AM

I bring this up every few years. UofSC is one of only 5 FBS schools (power 5 conferences, whatever) that have never appeared in a major bowl. Never. Since 1892. 128 years. Even most traditional bottom feeders have at least had a team or two that were outstanding and secured a bid to a major bowl. Wake, Duke, Northwestern, Indiana, Rice, etc... heck, Rice has been to 6 major bowls... 4 Cottons, a Sugar and an Orange. Here's the loser short list:

When you consider the resources of those 5 schools, I think it's safe to say UofSC is the biggest underachiever in the nation. Huge stadium, massive budget, rabid fan base, big coaching hires through the years, etc. They check all the boxes.

When I posted this a few years ago I had to do all the research. Now there's an article that sums it up nicely. It's from 2018 but nothing has changed since then.

The funny part is being in the SEC actually hurt us in 2012 and 2013 because of the two team max rule.

Exactly. They brag about their conference and brag about all that SEC money handed out then cry cause they can’t win because of their tough conference schedule. Boo Hoo.

And all these years I thought it was because of...

May 28, 2020, 2:45 AM [ in reply to Re: but SEC? ]

The 44-11 beat down by Flawda and the loss to Tennersee.

A 44-11 loss to a Muschump team should count for 3 losses (cuz it usually takes 3 games for his teams to score a combined 44 points).

What makes it even better is the fact that they are so passionate about football.

May 27, 2020, 6:12 AM

There is no other program that has that much money and that many fans going to their games that has gotten less from their program. That is a fact.

So you're saying the Coots are the "Kirby Smarts of All-Time College Football Bowl Futility". I don't see them ending this 128 year streak anytime soon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They’re worse than that. Way worse than that.

Nah at least Kirby did make it to a title game. LMAO! THAT really says a lot about your program coots!

Texas A&M maybe.

When you look at how much $$$ they dump into their program. And for what? A few claimed (Bama style) championships?

Nah. A&M has a pretty good history. They are a much more respectable program than USuCk. A&M owns the chickens.

May 27, 2020, 6:58 AM

played Navy in the next to last game was a lock. In fact, they turned down a Sugar Bowl bid in order to play for the nat'l championship in the Orange Bowl vs either Nebraska or Oklahoma. It was just assumed they'd crush Navy and probably beat Clemson in the final game. Navy had only 3 wins and were now riddled with injuries, including their only good player, Heisman finalist RB Napoleon McCallum.

Instead, they laid a big fat egg and were beaten 38-21 in a game that wasn't that close. I think Navy was up 31-7 or something like that before UofSC started slinging bombs in desperation. Massive upset and choke job with everything on the line. They dropped badly in the polls from #2 and ended up in the Gator Bowl vs Okla St... and lost. LOL

Only other times they've even come close were the Spurrier 11 win teams.

I remember that day and loved the outcome. The coots had been crowing all season and getting worse every week. That game brought them back to reality and shut them up!

They are 0-5 against the "weak"(?) ACC, so they would not do well in another conference either. They simply SUCK.

Just a couple tweaks of the current system and it could all turn around for them.

Have a new bowl game, I propose it be located in Hobbs, New Mexico. Call it “The Major Bowl”. The coots can play New Mexico State in that bowl every year.
