Our biggest, overarching on-field problem...

Nov 7, 2021, 8:01 AM

giving away easy points and not taking easy points. We have given the other teams multiple layup points off of mistakes and turnovers. Last night it was the muffed punt, usually it has been DJU's mistakes, occasionally it's been penalties.

But even more maddening is when we leave points on the field. Not converting Shipley's big kickoff return, not punching it in on 4th & goal (we're terrible on 4th down period), and especially not sealing the game on our final real possession.

Just do those things and we're winning most games comfortably.

(btw, the real problem is off-field and I will chime in on that after the season is over)

Perry Noble as Dabo’s North Star is the real issue here?

Oh go ahead and chime in on the off-field problem..

Most others are.

My take is there are several starting with some coaches, recruiting, roster philosophy, player development, player effort etc.

I’ve been this all year

Here is something bigger behind the scenes that Dabo won’t discuss mid season and possibly even after the season

Something isn't right, it seems. When you dont know

Nov 7, 2021, 9:09 AM

something, your mind tends to blow it up into something deep. Which it might be. Or it might be one coach. Dont know. But its been building for a while, it seems. Take Trevor off the field, we're as bad last year as this year. But Dabo said that was his favorite team. So something weird is happening.

Watching last nights game I was thinking "this is where we should be on week 1, not 9.

Seems we have deep developmental problems to me. Granted, the entire offense is sophomore, and the defense is junior, but even raw talent shouldn't be that bad, and these guys have the physical skills. Dabo said there was only one senior started on the roster, which is true, but after 2 or 3 years in our system these guys should just be farther along it seems.

Pomm should be much better than he seems after so much time at backup. But its clear that still he is 2nd to as rough as dj is.

Improvement is noticeable, though. The running game is kinda dependable now, DJ is connecting with receivers, the sacks have dropped off. But what went on in spring practice and pre-season. Coaches had to know this was s steaming pile of shid offense.

Dabo even made a cryptic remark last week about how proud he was of everyone after "all they had been through." What does that mean? What happened all preseason?

Agree with all. The point I take from this is that after all

Nov 7, 2021, 2:31 PM

the improvement, and this being maybe the best offensive game of the season, we had 345 total yards. 60% pass completions. 3.5 yards per carry. Against a bad defense. 3rd/4th-and-short feels like a sure punt/turnover. Took a bunch of snaps at 2nd and 15. And all this is with nothing but 4/5*s at every position. We all know all this. Been said many times by everyone.

So why say it again? Maybe this. This feels like the 1976 team that had future pros all over the field but won 3 games. The new coach in for 1977, Charlie Pell, took those players, changed attitudes and mindset, and went 8-3, then 10-1. Those two years, then Ford that followed, put us where we are now. Joe Bostic said at Pell's funeral, “There are coaches for times and places. He was the man for us. He came here and made us a team. He made us believe in ourselves. We were good players, but we just did not know it. Most of all, he made us men.”

Dabo is clearly the man for Clemson, now and as long as he wants to be there. But if the subject is that offensive unit, something is missing, and it's not just another year's experience. We were this bad last year, with Trevor to cover it over. I can't know what the change needs to be. But it's something. They're afraid and insecure, and that won't be fixed with another year of the the past 2 years.

I'll add to that a bit. A 5 star isn't just potential. He's 5 star because he comes with some level of polish. Granted there are busts and media hype, etc, but the coaches (maybe not the recruiting services) know what these guys are...which is why they are recruited in the first place.

Some are projects, but the coaches know. Dabo said when he first started talking about Trevor..."this guy can win us a championship". So for the most part coaches know what they are getting. So if it's not the players, that only leaves the coaches and the development system they created.

So have we recruited too many 5 hearts, or too many projects, or is it just a snake-bit season? We know they know what it takes. They've done it not once, but twice, with 2 diff qb's. lesser overall talent, and entirely different rosters. So what gives?
