The “Transfer Portal” isn’t new

Dabo won two championships when plenty of other teams were accepting. The only thing that changed was the media calling it a portal and waivers allowing a few high profile recruits immediate eligibility. The New rules started this season and some are acting like Dabo is light years behind. He knows things are changing this season. He also knows he will be limited due to 6 year players and reinstatement of the 85 limit. I don’t expect many transfers or walk on scholarships next season.

I think that the new portal does away with sitting out a year.

Correct but that didn’t start until this season.

It's a very different situation when they can

transfer and not have to sit out a year. What Dabo has done is nothing short of amazing. However, what keeps a guy like Saban at the top is his willingness to go with the changes and not stand still. Every year the transfer portal is going to become a bigger an bigger part of college football and like it or not, Dabo is going to have to adapt.

I also think it is flawed to compare Dabo to Saban, who runs off players and has very little coaching continuity. Dabo’s success was built through culture and family. I agree he will eventually identify 1-2 players that are the right fit. Taking on players just to fill roster spots, running off players to make room, or signing questionable 5 stars because saban does it will ruin his program faster than anything. You can’t out bama bama. Ask LSU or UGA. Clemson has done it differently and been more successful than the rest of the country.

how he's run his offense. He saw the newer offenses with the more modern passing game, and he adapted to go along with it. When it's come to his coaching staff, he has no problem making changes. He's now getting players from the transfer portal even though he's loaded with 4/5 stars already. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade Dabo for anything. I'm just saying if he's going to keep Clemson on top, I believe he's going to have to adapt a little to the changes like the transfer portal. Not saying to build the team that way but every once in awhile there could be a good kid out there that coil contribute

Yes, he brought in coaches after other coaches left.

But he didn't fire guys just to make changes. He did implement a more modern offense, but we've been out in front with our offensive innovation. It's the primary reason we've been so successful. Some teams have caught up on offense, but offense has not been our problem until the first 5 games this year. What changes would you suggest? Until this season we've been the #2 team in the land and the most consistent except Alabama.
What wold we have changed? What positions do we need transfers? No changes have been needed anywhere on the team, and with Alabama having 2 transfer players in the 2-deep that isn't a big difference maker either. I don't think saying "Saban has been willing to make changes" compares to us at all.
Like Dabo said, if we have a must-have position then we will dip into the portal, otherwise we develop all of our players in the program and honor their scholarships. It's obviously been a highly successful process until these 5 games, and I just don't see how a couple transfer players would have changed anything. Taisun is our #2 QB, regardless. How would transfer players change our program from what it's been this season?

For the most part I agree, but the new eligibility rules (And it didn't just start this year iirc) basically allow for every second-string QB in the nation to have a "free agent" fifth year where they can go start somewhere before they try their hand at the NFL.
I don't disagree that Dabo shouldn't make wholesale changes to what he's built over the last 12+ years, but it's also a bit foolish to place unnecessary limits on the program and how it acquires the players it needs to be successful. After all, success begets success in CFB, and without the willingness to make the right moves and win, traditional recruiting is going to suffer as well.

I think Dabo is spot on. We'll continue to win with a clean roster. A roster of Clemson football players, not a hodge podge of "free agents".

Not taking transfers will make it exponentially harder to consistently make the playoffs. Sure, it can be done, but the margin for error becomes much slimmer.
Dabo will have to adapt and figure out a way to make the portal at minimum neutral in impact to the program.
Just imagine if we at least brought in guys as good as the ones we lost to transferring.
