The "Thinning Of The Herd" Oct 19th Edition (Upsets)

Oct 20, 2019, 6:58 AM

My weekly public service to anybody out there who believes there will be more than 4 undefeated teams at the end of the year vying for a place in the College Football Playoffs. It won’t happen, despite each year around this time people beginning to wonder as undefeated teams seem invincible.

The inevitable will happen….it’s called “the thinning of the herd”.

Recap Of Last Week
I did not expect much reduction in the herd this week, primarily because the 9 undefeated teams were heavy favorites in their games.

But the herd was tested…as favorites struggled to pull away early in some of the games (Bama, Penn State, and Baylor all had battles on their hands into the 4th QTR).

And we lost Wisconsin from the herd…stunned on the road in Champagne, IL to terrible Illini team.

It goes to show…that even on a day that did not expect turmoil, we got it anyway.

The herd is now down to 8…and I believe it will go down at least 1 more next week as several teams are on upset alert.

Guaranteed Thinning Will Take Place
None

"Upset Alert”
Wisconsin at Ohio State…the Badgers are licking their wounds from their stunning loss, and this is a nooner in Columbus, so all of the ingredients are in the kettle for an upset.

Auburn at LSU…The SEC like to eat their own, and this would be a classic example. LSU is playing great football right now, and they will have to do that next week if they want to remain unbeaten.

Penn State at Michigan State…The hangover of the “white out” win over Michigan Saturday night will be tested in full force for the Nittany Lions.

Will Keep Winning....For Now
Oklahoma at Kansas State…The former “Bill Synders” are 4-2 and Manhattan is a tough place to play, but I just think the Sooners bring too much firepower and will remain clean.

Maryland at Minnesota…The Flecking Gophers will live at least one more week with a clean jersey because the former ACC’ers are not a good football team.

Arkansas at Alabama…I could start at QB for Bama next week vs. the Chad Morris’s, but QB drama at Bama is of concern down the road.

Boston College at Clemson…Speaking of QB issues, BC used to be a tough “out” for Clemson, but next Saturday they will serve as a traditional homecoming victim.

Baylor has a bye week.

Good Poast

Oct 20, 2019, 7:25 AM

It gets tougher and tougher each week for the unbeatens .
Not because of top 25 matchups particularly but because the season's grind takes that toll on the players . Injuries and fatigue happens .
Teams get a lot better film on a school , teams that were awful to start the season can hit a stride and take you out if you don't play well . There's so much going on in the second half of the season of CFB .
One of the best parts for me is watching the " experts " have to do square-dances every week to readjust their narratives and to act like they " saw it coming " when a top team tumbles unceremoniously to a bottom feeder .
Love this time of year .

Great Time to be a Clemson Tiger :)

Injuries and fatigue happens...to everybody except us. We get some dings and dents, yeah, but because we play so many guys that abuse gets spread out and shared and our guys have a lot more tread left on their tires.

Oh, and yeah, if a guy's hurt we can hold him. That Louisville WR who banged his head on our folding table NEVER should have been let back into the game. He wouldn't have been at Clemson. Was Xavier Thomas risking CTE by playing with a concussion? No he was not.

The other thing that seems to happen is, when the pressure hits, you see team after team after team imploding down the stretch and losing inexplicable games in the last month of the season. Instead of aggressively playing your game and let's just see what happens, the mentality becomes: don't mess it up. And teams get wound up tight.

Clemson lives at those pressures. Honestly the hardest part for Dabo seems to be keeping his guys awake until November.

I agree with what you said, but would clarify that we really can't take any dings at the QB position. That's why I cringe every time I see TL running. I think it's an unnecessary part of the offensive plan, and is putting him at a heightened risk for getting injured.

Group of 5 also thinning now with Boise losing...

Oct 20, 2019, 8:29 AM

SMU now carries that banner, but how long will they last?

The ‘1 loss’ teams are starting to thin as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Last year there was 1 undefeated team and three 1 loss teams

Oct 20, 2019, 9:07 AM

at the end of the season. Two of the three 1 loss teams, lost to Clemson.

I'd swap OU and Penn State...

Oct 20, 2019, 9:01 AM

Kansas State is at least a team with a pulse. Michigan State will struggle to reach double digits on the scoreboard. Though I do agree OU is better than PSU by a fair margin.

Good read, and everything you said

explains why there shouldn't be 100s of posts about where we are in the polls right now. It doesn't matter. There will be upsets and likely only 1-3 undefeated teams when all the dust settles. If those undefeated teams are from a power 5 conference they will be in the playoff.
