Playoffs/ bowls

Jan 1, 2019, 2:41 PM

I think expansion will become necessary. The attendance at the bowl games has been pathetic ( even today’s games). It’s gonna come down to dollars: poor attendance, poor concessions, losing money, apathy, sponsors will drop and schools will decline invitations because they can’t sell tickets .

we could lose about 10 bowls games and not miss anyone of them. Maybe 20. A 6-6 team in a bowl game is a joke.

Still don't understand how bowls can set the price of a ticket

Jan 1, 2019, 2:53 PM

And then force schools to sell x amount of tickets or have to eat the cost. It may only be 5000 seats or 10000. But still doesn't sound legal

Even some of the mid and major bowls have not been sell outs. In the past, an invitation to a bowl was a reward for an exce3llent season. Now, even a 6 - 6 team goes to a bowl where attendance is so low the cameras are ashamed to show the crowd. Forty bowls means teams will be accepted who have padded their record by playing patsies. Standards for bowl appearances have been lowered over the years to allow for teams with a 6 - 6 record. Only those teams with a winning record against teams in the same division should be allowed to be in a bowl. This alone would eliminate several bowls. P5 schools and schools in other divisions could schedule teams in lower divisions but those wins would not count in making them bowl eligible. For example, the Gamecocks had a final record of 7 - 5 but three of those wins were against teams from a lower division. A 4 - 5 record against P5 teams would make them ineligible for a bowl game. I use the Gamecock record merely as an example and not as a knock on their illustrious program which has received adequate coverage in other threads.

I used to think the same thing, but when you look at the revenue numbers, it's the TV rights that make games profitable. Sponsors don't care about attendance, and the conferences get plenty of money from the TV deals. The TV ratings are down slightly, but they are still the most popular thing on TV. College football games are always the highest rated programs on cable TV.

Schools aren't going to decline bowl games due to low ticket sales when they're making a fortune from the TV deals.

Coming from another fanbase who hasn't gotten a playoff bid the bowls have become nothing more hyped scrimmage. I can remember as kid when my team got a Gator bowl bid I felt like it was magical and it was a huge get for a w in that bowl. You guys are going through a great time in your program and its sheltered your fanbase from how lame and irrelevant bowls have become. The year you dont make a playoff you'll see that their is no luster on any bowl any longer. College football is going the an evolution right now and part of it is Bowls are becoming unimportant and outdated. I liken bowls to the NIT in basketball.
