The secondary and my concerns...

Aug 23, 2013, 2:07 PM

Am I the only one that is currently concerned about our secondary? I really wanted Alexander and Kearse, two physically gifted guys to emerge as either starters or guys that coaches have complete confidence in giving the experienced guys a run for their money or at least a decent breather when they get tired, but their injuries have totally negated this postive narrative one week away from the GA game. I really don't want to see GA receivers getting behind our secondary like many average teams did last year. Will they get healthy in time to provide legitimate backup minutes? What about the other guys in the secondary? Haven't heard great confidence from the coaches lately which makes me sh*t my pants. Somebody respond with intelligence to alleviate my concerns...

agree 100%. However....

Aug 23, 2013, 2:18 PM

I DO think that they will be much better than last year. We at least have experience at the position (maybe no safety). But at CB we have depth (4 guys who can start) and some experience. So, although they are not great talents currently, I think they can hold their own. Every team has weak points, and the secondary will probably be ours, but our strengths outweigh our weaknesses.

Re: agree 100%. However....

Aug 23, 2013, 2:22 PM

I really all depends if we can get pressure on the QB. If we can our Secondary will be fine. It's when the receivers have time to find a seam is when it gets ugly for the secondary. If our front 4 can put pressure on Murray it's going to be a long day for them Dawg fans.

I agree with you as well AND I think that Travis Blanks now, without playing at safety is better than last year's bunch, my opinion of course. (Fact is, our safeties were out of position over half the time.) I also think we will benefit from Veneble's 2nd year, Coach Reed better coaching than Coach Cheese from a fundamental standpoint and a commitment to be perfect, and our CB's healthier than last year. Oh, and a better pass rush will help too. But, have those veteran CB's learned truly to move on if they have a bad play? Will they not turn their hips in time and get burnt again like last year? I'll throw my remote if they do, bc we should be better.

Adam Humphries?

Aug 24, 2013, 9:13 AM [ in reply to agree 100%. However.... ]

Last year they cross trained him. I'm wondering if he will be utilized, he's a great utility guy and very consistent.

Until I see 2-3 straight games without

Aug 23, 2013, 2:25 PM

a deep ball TD I am worried. I think for the past 2 season we have gave up a long TD in 95% of our games.

Re: Until I see 2-3 straight games without

Aug 23, 2013, 2:29 PM

Amen, exactly. Could you imagine how good we can be on D if we just keep them in front of us? I'm really looking forward to that, bc Clemson would be awfully tought to beat for 4 quarters no matter who we play.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Murray will try long balls to test & we will miss Alexander

I may be wrong, but IMO...

Aug 23, 2013, 4:18 PM

Kearse suffered a mild separation and will be back on Monday, hopefully. Alexander is expected to be back on Monday, as well as Adrian Baker. I believe Swinney and the staff see potential in these guys and don't want them getting banged up before the opener...sort of a precautionary process. Hopefully I'm correct. As long as they're physically able and well conditioned, I can see them contributing against Georgia and early on. I'm not really concerned with the depth issue, because I trust the reliability of Jenkins, Breeland, Peters and Robinson. They have the experience as well. IMO, our front 7 gets enough pressure up front for the DB's to contain the passing game. Plus, I believe our LB's will be a lot better in coverage situations in the second year of Venebles defense.

Like your Pawsitiveness - you may just be right- hope so!

Well thought out, thanks!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You trust D Rob in our Secondary?

Aug 24, 2013, 8:14 AM [ in reply to I may be wrong, but IMO... ]

From a trust standpoint, I breakdown our cornerbacks this way 1-5 with 1 being the most trustworthy:

1. Breeland - our most solid corner, bites too hard on double moves and play action, but he's the best we got

2. Jenkins - IMO our most talented corner. Only problem is his size and availability. Not sure he is tall enough to play guys on the outside

3. Peters - Has shown flashes that he can be good. Just needs more mental consistency.

4. Robinson - I don't trust at all. When the lights are on he has yet to show that he is a competent corner. He is always the guy opposing QBs attack because of his lack of strength and awareness

5. Alexander - I would move him to the 2 or 3 spot just on potential, but he has to get healthy first. Groins linger and he's been out a while

Aug 24, 2013, 8:39 AM [ in reply to I may be wrong, but IMO... ]

a true freshmen who hasn't fully practiced since the 1st day of camp will not be ready to contribute early in game 1.
You put the Boyds and Watkins of the world on the shelf during camp....not the true freshmen who don't know the system and have minimal reps.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Re: I may be wrong, but IMO...

Aug 24, 2013, 9:03 AM

A true freshman like Alexander and Kearse have the potential to contribute immediately unlike other freshmen. As long as they know the playbook, schemes and remain conditioned going through the walkthroughs, they can provide depth and bring that edge to the table that were missing. We don't have one physical, press cover corner on the 2 deep like Alexander. If time can nurse that groin until game day, I don't see why the staff wouldn't play him. A corner like Alexander can jam Mitchell, Bennett and co. at the line of scrimmage, and disrupt them long enough for our d-line to get to Murray. It also helps the run on the edge, more so than our corners who typically start out 5 yards off the defender. Kearse is also long and rangy with good ball skills. We haven't had that athletic, 6'4 type safety in a while. These two, along with Baker could be difference makers in coverage and provide needed depth. It would be a smart move by the staff to rep them and walk them through preparations and limit them as long as possible until game day to keep them fresh. Just my opinion.

fyi...the scuttlebutt around practice is that they hope to have MA back by the NCSU game. His injury is lingering.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just stop the dawg running game and

Aug 24, 2013, 12:29 AM

force Murray to throw. We win that way. If their running game is clicking, they will complete some long balls. Stop Marshall and Gurley and game over.

Re: Just stop the dawg running game and

Aug 24, 2013, 9:49 AM [ in reply to Just stop the dawg running game and ]

This is some of the most wishful thinking I've encountered on this forum. If Clemson stacks the line and dares Murray to throw the way they did against LSU Murray will ring that scoreboard up like a pinball machine.

So A QB who is set to break SEC records for yards passed and TD's wont be a factor in this game? A guy who was just selected as the best QB in the conference by coaches, a guy who has the best TE in the conference to throw to, a guy who has a better receiving corps than Clemson to throw to...wont be a factor in winning this game???

Thats nuts.

Re: Just stop the dawg running game and

Aug 24, 2013, 9:57 AM

Unfortunately - I agree with you. There is always hope.

The facts are: JawJaw can pass and WILL test our secondary, over and over again. And they have Gurley.

Here's the key - the UGA D is nowhere near as good as the LSU D we faced in the bowl game - however, they have a much more potent and explosive offense.

It will most likely be a shootout. I see Georgia scoring at least twice through the air and then a sustained drive utilizing their backs - hopefully only once.

I see Clemson lighting up their secondary and putting at least 35 points on the board.

I fear it may look like last years N.C. State, except substitute in a MUCH better adversary.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Re: You almost sounded legit

Aug 24, 2013, 10:26 AM [ in reply to You almost sounded legit ]

Well, I'm not the only 1 who thinks that. Athlon ranked UGA's receiving corps 3rd. Clemson's 6th. Phil Steele has UGA ranked 5th, Clemson 7th.

Watkins will be the best receiver on the field. After that UGA's top 3 receivers are better than Bryant and Peake. But our rotation wont stop there. We added Rumph, a JUCO guy. Rantavious Wooten is a senior. Justin Scott-Wesley was a state record holder in the 100m. we've probably got a good 7 deep at WR that can play. You cant sleep on our ability to throw.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i've never seen ugay fans resort so much to juco guys,

Aug 24, 2013, 12:48 PM

what's up ? y'alls recruiting slipping ? someone going into ga.,and getting your best h.s. football talent ? THAT WOULD BE US, WE'RE BACK !

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: i've never seen ugay fans resort so much to juco guys,

Aug 24, 2013, 1:03 PM

Mark Richt kicked a lot of dudes off the team. Nick Marshall and Chris Sanders would have both played in our secondary. Marshall would have been a stud. On the defensive line Derrick Lott transferred for playing time. Kwame Geathers left after his junior year.
Georgia HS's have more than enough players to go around. We'll see if yall are back on Aug 31st.

Re: Just stop the dawg running game and

Aug 24, 2013, 11:33 AM [ in reply to Just stop the dawg running game and ]

You make it sound so easy, but Bama couldn't do it. And you forget that Georgia is way more balanced then LSU. Stacking the box will only lead to Murray ripping apart your secondary.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson should take a page from USC....

Aug 24, 2013, 10:07 AM

I know it is painful to say but we need to rush Murray early and often. Shock and awe..... This creates opportunities for early turnovers and score separation. If we are leading at half by 14 or more then I think we will win. We have the twelfth man and it will be the difference in this game. We can and will score with them but it can't be tied going into the fourth qtr. We confuse Murray early with blitzes and stunts early and take advantage of turnovers early.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no doubt...

Aug 24, 2013, 10:12 AM

Just wish we had Clowney to be that disruptive force - AHHHHH we ALMOST got him too.

Anyway - I am pleased with what I'm hearing from the coaches about our D line - and if they play the way they did against LSU in the 4th, holy cow, look out world.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The secondary and my concerns...

Aug 24, 2013, 10:34 AM

You are not the only one concerned. I am also very concerned. Early injuries have already caused us to be razor thin in the secondary. Add to that, the fact that inexperience is also a big factor. Hell yes I'm concerned.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think it's that bad.

Aug 24, 2013, 10:40 AM

It's not perfect but it's the best we've had in a very long while.
