the reality of expansion (long)

May 19, 2012, 7:40 AM

I see a lot of different threads with different ideas about expansion and what will happen. Usually the realistic threads get turned into a hatefest against the op. The reality of the expansion is that this isnt about football, its about tv pure and simple.

Does Clemson deserve to be in the SEC? Yes. Should they? Yes. Will they? No. Clemson does not bring enough to the table tv wise. They have great tradition, facilities, and fans and that should warrant the move but unfortunately that is not enough.

We had the discussion last night, who does the SEC grab? Most definitely they will go with NC State. UNC isnt an option, they will go down with the sinking ship that is the ACC. Is NC State a great team? No but the city of Raleigh offers a lot as far as tourism and it brings in the NC capital tv market.

Next is a toss up between Maryland and VT. Both grab the DC market. Again, are they the best teams? No. But grabbing new markets give the SEC the push to renegotiate their new deal. Lets face it, with the SEC winning the last 5 national championships, they can bargain to earn a lot more money. Sorry but clemson, FSU, GT arent even considered there. Its not about USC, UF, or UGA blocking membership.

Now to the Big 12...with the addition of the new champions game between the SEC and Big 12, the need to move to the Big 12 becomea imperitive for Clemson. I think if offered Clemson will go and the fans have proven they want to remain a championship contender. I can tell you now though with the news of yesterday all big east and acc teams will look to move. This includes GT, which would be a big market for them, Maryland as well. FSU is the shoe in here, but who is second? This is what worries me. There is a lot of garbage floating around about who goes, who stays, package deals, etc. Every relevent report ive read, which are few and far between, do not mention clemson. That is not to say they arent in the talks but i do not believe FSU is worried about what happens to CU. This is every man for himself and i hope Clemson is not relying on FSU.

Lastly people say clemson is closed mouth bc this a done deal. That is the optomistic perspective but truly speculative. Clemson needs to make their intentions known now bc there is one team not mentioned that will not just go quietly in the night and disappear. That team is Miami. They are a tradional powerhouse and has just been rebuilding after a few bad years. They will become relevant again and if the ACC is going to die and merge with big east basketball, they will claw for a spot in big 12. So will big 12 expand to 14 or 16 all at once? I seriously doubt it but you have a lot of people fighting for spots. Right now the big 12 will take 2, one is FSU but who gets the final spot? I promise maryland, miami, and GT want it to. Is clemson the best football team? Yes. Is it enough to save them? We will see.

Pretty good points for a first post.

I wonder if lawsuits is why Clemson is being so closed mouthed? TDP's is a lawyer and would know when to come forward to avoid any legal complications.

Agree with most of what you say, but here's the end all, be all answer as to WHY certain teams are more attractive than others despite culture, team brand, etc...
This is from a 2010 article about the Big10 Network

"Cable television analyst Mike Reynolds of Multichannel News estimated that the Big Ten is getting a subscription fee of 70 cents per month per subscriber within that eight-state Big Ten region. Outside of that area, he says, the fee drops to 10 cents"

Simple as that. It's all about being in a position to form your own network. The SEC will eventually do that. So multiply 70 cents times the subscribers in NC or VA vs 10 cents a subscriber that they already have in SC.

That math is why Clemson will never get invited to the SEC. Period. Stop.

i think that's what he said...

its about TV. clemson brings nothing new in terms of markets or population to the SEC.

tdp better lean on his ok st roots. i disagree with you about making it public knowledge. i think this is something that if done right, can be done queitly..much like the ACC did with Pitt and Syracuse.

i do think you have hit the nail on the head. the acc is going to fall on its on sword. it is going to live and die with this basketball crap. UNC is so self absorbant with basketball that it has let Swoffie make all the decisions based on those criteria. i am going to laugh my #### off when they day comes that FSU and whomever else bolt (i pray to god that we go with them).

Miami was originally against a move to the Big 12... citing

they were going to cut back funding for football...

I have no idea where they stand now.

Hey, it's the best I could do. Essentially, ACC and Big East are being left behind and CU has to do what is best for CU. GO TIGERS!

Hate to say it, but that would rock. Imagine how packed BD would be with Michigan, OSU, et al coming to Atlanta?! I would still like to see Clemson and GT play though.

That was I was trying to explain to some of the nuckle heads

May 19, 2012, 8:57 AM

on this site....Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville TV market is relatively small which is causing some issues for Clemson getting in the SEC...or even the Big 12. Lets hope we can raise above that if the ACC lays down and die as a major football conference player.

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! It's NOT about individual TV markets. It's about states and subscribers in those states. See my post above. The Big10 Network gets 70 cents per subscriber in states where they have teams and 10 cents a subscriber where they dont. If you're going to form your own network you want STATES. You could care less about markets.
The SEC will eventually form their own network. They want states.
