Doctor Stephen Hawking weighs in on nationalism, Trump, and Brexit:
As a theoretical physicist based in Cambridge, I have lived my life in an extraordinarily privileged bubble. Cambridge is an unusual town, centred around one of the world’s great universities. Within that town, the scientific community that I became part of in my 20s is even more rarefied.
And within that scientific community, the small group of international theoretical physicists with whom I have spent my working life might sometimes be tempted to regard themselves as the pinnacle. In addition to this, with the celebrity that has come with my books, and the isolation imposed by my illness, I feel as though my ivory tower is getting taller.
So the recent apparent rejection of the elites in both America and Britain is surely aimed at me, as much as anyone. Whatever we might think about the decision by the British electorate to reject membership of the European Union and by the American public to embrace Donald Trump as their next president, there is no doubt in the minds of commentators that this was a cry of anger by people who felt they had been abandoned by their leaders.
It was, everyone seems to agree, the moment when the forgotten spoke, finding their voices to reject the advice and guidance of experts and the elite everywhere.

Where is this going?
What is the answer?

My fiance keeps pointing out to me that if you strip most protest down to its core, its about people trying to be heard when they feel that they are unheard.
Great article.

I don't like how Hamilton sulked and pouted in the last race, but I get his frustration.....MB gave Rosberg his mechanics and suddenly Hamilton has 4 DNF's that Rosberg didn't. Take those away, and Hamilton would have won the championship going away.
I'm assuming Rosberg's retirement is a combination of the family making him more sensitive to the risks of the sport, combined with the face that he realizes that it's an accomplishment not likely to be repeated.

You cannot pick up one culture and set it down

in the midst of another culture without consequences.
There has to be time for assimilation.
And that assimilation assumes the "moved culture" is moved toward the host culture.
There are communities within our cities where that is just not the case.
The West has advanced at a rapid rate due to specific, identifiable reasons.
The left usually rejects those reasons, and comes up with their own - white men exploiting others is at the core of it.
But that is not correct.
For example, any gains from slavery were wiped out totally.
Any natural resource would still be in the earth if there was no knowledge of how to extract and use it.
If people in poorer countries want the gains of the West, they must change their culture.
The West cannot absorb the planet's population without reducing the people in the West to the level of 3rd world countries.
We will all be Somalia.
That is totally unacceptable, and the people of the West will not accept it.
Nor should they.
If the people in 3rd world countries want to live at the level of developed countries, they must adopt the political, cultural, and economic freedoms of the developed countries.
Multiculturalism, the idea that no one culture is superior to another, is a lie that does nothing but harm the people who need to change their culture.

pick the one that provides a framework for freedom and prosperity.
Mark Steyn, in his book "America Alone" tells an anecdote from the British colonial era about a new British provincial governor being shown around his new realm in India. They happened on a funeral for a prominent local man, who was being immolated on his funeral pyre. He noticed a woman being brought toward the fire and asked about what was happening. He was told that this was the man's widow and that she would, according to the local custom, be burned alive on the pyre of her husband.
"Not while this is a part of the British Empire," the governor said. "That's barbaric, and it won't happen on my watch."
If you look around the globe today, you'll find that former British colonies, by and large, are doing quite well compared to most nations. I don't believe that's a coincidence.

The British governor's quote is a lot more cutting-British..

The way I've heard that told, he said something more like this after being told that the custom was to burn the widow alive: "Very well. You may follow your custom. But we also have a custom. When men burn women alive, we hang them and confiscate all their property. So let us act according to national custom."
Gotta love those Brits.
