E-Mail I just sent John Seketa about the piped in noise

Nov 29, 2010, 11:45 AM

November 29, 2010
Mr. John Seketa
Assist. Athletic Director -Event Promotions
Clemson University

Dear Mr. Seketa:

I am concerned and writing you as a Clemson graduate (Class of 1988) and as a long-time football season ticket holder about the current use of artificial noise in Memorial Stadium. Over the last several years it has encroached on and overwhelmed the true nature and sound of Death Valley. This year I think it has become a true monstrosity and it has compelled me to write to you about it since I find it so objectionable.

First of all, it drowns out our band or any time when our band could be playing during the course of the ballgame. I realize we don’t have a big band but I and many other fans would still like to be able to hear the traditional musical sound of Clemson football: Tiger Band.

The first time I heard noise like this being piped in to a stadium was when I traveled to Clemson away games in the late 90’s and mid 2000’s at places like Wake Forest and Virginia. I hated the piped in artificial noise that pumped up the volume in these otherwise quite stadiums but added nothing to the fire and passion of the fans. It has now crept into our own stadium, which has a reputation of being loud without needing artificial noise, and it does nothing for the atmosphere in Death Valley in my opinion.

Secondly, the selection of music is really not enjoyable to all and I ask you of the 80,000 people in the stadium who is it being played to fire up? Our players? Our fans? If our players need music to fire them up, then let them do so with their own I-Pods on the sidelines. I don’t think we need the same music to be blared out over the loudspeakers to fire up Clemson fans. Clemson fans were smart before artificial piped in music and knew when to stand and get loud for their team without some hint by music. We can for the most part do without it and Death Valley will still be intimidating and authentic as it gets in college football.

Finally, it takes away from our crowd noise and traditions. For example, on the kickoff, the fans traditionally hold up their right arm in the Tiger wave while saying a long “go” until the ball is kicked into the air at which time they yell: Go Tigers! I still do so as do some of the older fans around me, but many young fans around us are not even aware of this Clemson tradition. I also think playing it on 3rd down drowns out any noise the crowd may be building to bring to the 3rd down play. It is not natural and I think instead of cheering and following through, many people just let the music automatically serve for their own passion and voices and then when the music stops they don’t raise the level sufficiently or in time to make a difference on the play.

Am I saying never use this type of music? No. I think it can be used less frequently and in more tactful situations In Death Valley. For example, the playing of “We Will Rock You” at the 2009 game was spot on. That however, has not been the case with the music this season. I hope that you will evaluate the use of piped in music this year and try to make sure it does not destroy the unique atmosphere of Death Valley. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Andy Thomas
Clemson Class of 1988

Piped in noise is the least of our concerns right now.

true does anyone know a way to.....

I totally agree. The music ( noise actually it's not music) is ridiculous. It's part of the "dumbing down" of our society in general though unfortunately.

Great email, I asked a few older tiger fans about this. I really think it kills the momentum of the crowd.

You guys were as loud as why stadium I've been to when you spell out clemson in unison. But the piped in music seemed to discourage your fans and even the students from making noise themselves. I sat in your student section and they were mostly his dancing to the music

If he replies, ask him if they piped in "DABO, DABO, DABO!" chant at the end of the SC game two years ago.

He gets these same e-mails 40 times a day, and he will answer you. This music is requested by the players, and he gets his orders from above. Don't rag on him.

Dude, the pipe music is absolutely the least of our concerns. However, since you brought it up, its 2010, not 1988. Music is different these days. The kids on the field seem to enjoy it and in the end, its really all about them. I agree that it doesnt seem to work this year but thats the reality of the situation and the times that we live in. I actually like some of the piped music but I do agree at times its in wrong situations. When recruits come in they like to hear that music, not a band every single time. The band gets there chances to play. At least switch up the songs or something but they have been doing this since early 2000 and I heard no b******g about it then. Start focusing on things that might help our Tigers get back on track, not music.

Yes, go back and check it! You are not bright enough to catch the sarcasm in that and notice that "through" was exactly what I was criticizing. The coot that I was replying to wrote through instead of throw. Again, you fail!

You have a miserable existence.

know there are lots of things out there right now to address--admin, coaches, media, etc. etc. etc. This one is personal but I feel there are others who also want it addressed. Attacking me for expressing my concerns is uncalled for but he did. That's all.

since 1999...... just don't sit in my basement wack**off about crowd noise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree, and logged on today just for that purpose...

Nov 29, 2010, 12:57 PM

Playing music between plays needs to stop. At least once, the happy DJ stepped on the game annoucer. And even played while our band was playing. It terribly cheapens the entire Clemson game day experience and kills crowd participation. A song or two during TV breaks or timeouts is OK, but this season has been ridiculous.

To those of you would rather talk about firing coaches, etc., then do so on your own thread. Those concerns are completely separate from the OPs.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why is "We Will Rock You" okay but not "All I Do Is Win?"...

Nov 29, 2010, 1:03 PM

especially when the crowd participation is heightened by the latter song. Of course, you need to be winning the game before playing that song. :)

We would probably pipe in less music if our band knew more than 5 songs.

I like hearing the band play too, but it would be much better if they knew more songs.

Please post his cookie cutter response then

be clever when you write back to tell him that isn't good enough.

The piped-in stuff ruins the crowd momentum.

Nov 29, 2010, 1:34 PM

I know the kids (fans and team) like it and that's fine. But, consider this example:

Our defense is making a stand. It's 2nd and 10 and we get a sack. The crowd goes nuts and that craziness will continue thru the next play....BUT INSTEAD...The techno-stuff is cranked up and the crowd stops yelling (which is what happens....I guess the old folks have their hands over their ears and the kids are dancing). The music stops when the opposing team breaks the huddle at which point DV is almost silent. By the time the crowd noise builds again, the ball is already snapped...which defeats the purpose of making it tough for them to hear their signals.

I have sat in the upper deck on the southwest side during a less than exciting game and welcomed the piped in music. The band is so far away, you can hardly hear them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i don't like it either and agree it needs to be toned down

Nov 29, 2010, 2:11 PM

especially on kickoffs, why abandon the waving of the right hand and go tigers cheer for piped in music??

Nov 29, 2010, 2:49 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have they ever sat in a gameday crowd?

Nov 29, 2010, 4:12 PM

I wonder Saturday night if the DJs running the sound at Death Valley have ever sat out in the crowd at a college football game.

The crowd can feed off the game and the players -- and good cheerleaders and band leaders can help. They need to do the right cheers at the right times to either wake up a dead crowd, or feed the crowd when it starts to build.

Like many things, it's an art, not a science.

But the AD folks who sit in press boxes and are "working" the entire game probably don't get this. They never sit out in the crowd and feel or experience this atmosphere. They just pump some loud crap, see a bunch of students jumping up and down, and think that they're "creating" a great atmosphere.

But they're not.

Maybe the band should find better songs to play or learn

Nov 29, 2010, 4:20 PM

the sheet music for the songs being played over the loud speaker and then we could hear it instrumentally without it being piped in. Most of the music the band plays is cheesy anyway.

I have a sneaking suspicion that those who dislike the piped in music wouldn't care if it was old rock instead of hip hop and pop.
