The Perfect Storm.

Oct 4, 2021, 5:03 PM

Normally, I think of that as being a good term, when used in football terms. It means everything just came together and a bunch of things all turned out right - for one season.
1. Auburn had the perfect storm season with Cam Newton.
2. (best example I can think of) LSU had a perfect storm season with Joe Burrow, Joe Brady and Dave Aranda.

But, looking at Clemson, 2021 seems to me like it could be the perfect storm season in a negative way.
1. DJ isn't as good as virtually everyone predicted.
2. The OL is not improved significantly over last year.
3. No running back seemed to step up and excel.
3a. And when it looked like Shipley was doing just that he gets injured.
4. Injuries to key players in key positions. (Not gonna name them. Y'all know them better than I.)

Maybe, just maybe, this is the "perfect storm season" for Clemson. Heck, maybe they turn it around, run the table, win a new year's six game finishing 11-2. Or maybe they end up 9-4, or even 8-5.

But, if it is a perfect storm, then there is good news. Perfect storms don't come around every year. They are aberrations.

In 1976 Bear Bryant entered the season with 6 losses in the previous 5 years. He finished 9-3 that year. The next 3 years he had 2 losses and 2 national championships.

In 2009 Nick Saban won a national championship. In 2010 he finishe3d 10-3. In 2011, and in 2012, he won the national championship.

Not saying this is the perfect storm season for Clemson. Just saying, it could be. And, it doesn't mean the end of the dynasty for Clemson.

Probably the biggest still achievable goal, other than

winning the State and winning a bowl game, is to win ten games and keep that streak alive. Before the season started, us spoiled fans took that as a given. It is anything but a gimmee now. It is still certainly possible, but as you said, circumstances and attrition are really working against us at this particular point in time.

Agree this is exactly that season. Injuries to major players at these numbers is against the odds. Shockingly poor offensive output added to high number of penalties has created a cliff like fall. Yet, we are 3-2. There is still cause for hope we can improve. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
