Social Justice at Clemson

It's been 50 years since I was in a Clemson classroom. I stood in the crowd when Harvey Gantt was escorted by SC Hwy Patrolmen up the steps of Tillman Hall for matriculation (which went rather smoothly). So, has common decency among incoming freshmen at Clemson gone so far off the rails that students need to take this course - or is it that the Clemson administration has rolled over and joined the Berkeley crowd to promote an agenda to correct a perceived problem? If the course has a real reason, then I'm for it - but if it's a misplaced agenda, I'm not at all in favor:
https://heatst.com/culture-wars/clemson-university-requires-all-freshman-to-take-new-social-justice-course/
And I'm not asking for a friend. I want to know.

I worked with a black girl that was late EVERY day..sometimes up to an hr late. We would complain that she would be holding up other's plans if they had something scheduled for the morning. She told us it was the culture of black women to be late. After about 2 months, her culture let her down and she was fired.

That is actually true, for what it's worth. Islanders - I've particularly noticed it among Caymanians, Trinidadians, and Jamaicans - tend to have this "time be time, we be gettin' there when I and I be gettin' there" attitude - and trying to stridently insist on getting them to be anywhere at precisely X time is often setting yourself up for frustration...they literally don't have that file on their hard drive, and it is indeed a very ingrained, laid-back cultural attitude.
Just a different worldview. FWIW. Dunno if it's "racist" to not get that but it can lead to some frustrations on both sides to not. Especially on their turf, you'd best just roll with it and get on Island Time, mon...and you get there when you get there, no point in worryin' your head 'bout it....

On a professional level.
Arrived for a 9 am meeting in South American country .... drank very good coffee in the owners inner lobby until 10:15. Business owner arrives and introduction until 11 am. Very casual tour of office and facility until 1 pm. Long lunch and some business discussions until 3 pm. Adjourned until dinner at 7 pm that lasted until 10:30 pm. Intoxicated - escorted by armed chauffeurs back to hotel.
Really have little recollection of any real business discussions.

So I guess if you want to you can just skip all the classes and claim you came to them but were just late.
When they fail you you sue them for racism and make a pretty penny.
Wish I was a freshman again.

It's considered a pass/fail class I'm currently a clemson student they already have one class like this is counts for 0 credit hours so I decided against wasting my time for some liberal agenda.

I was there too and i want to know the same answer. Goes along with the so-called professor's hunger strike against US Travel ban for people we know nothing about. Saw where france has 24000 on their terror watch list and that's what some of these crazies want for America.

The left long ago gained control of the education system but this kind of class at Clemson makes me want to vomit. Never thought I'd see serious discussions on renaming Tillman, either.

The only way to solve this issue is to withhold any funds from donors to Clemson. They only hear if it hits them in the pocketbook.

it's upsetting to admit but more and more so am I strongely considering not sending my children to clemson. If this is the direction they are choosing to take; my children will not be there and surely I am not alone.
So be it and my wallet will suffer, but a private university may be the only choice left

Yeah, got a 13 yr old who is smart as a whip and probably a bigger tiger than myself. I mentioned about a year ago that daddys money isnt going to support the type of b.s. that has popped up the last 4 or 5 yrs at clemson. If she gets a full ride, so be it. But I wont send a dime to that university. If football wasnt a form of entertainment for my family, I wouldn't spend what I spend on that. If things keep going like they have the last 20 years, the kids that will come out of that place will be impossible to work around

Local, there are many Tigers starting to feel that way and it's a shame. I expect this kind of liberal nonsense at UNC....and would never consider sending my child to a leftist indoctrination school. Hopefully the higher ups take notice of the majority's insistence that we not become a place where safe spaces are provided after elections.

To prepare students for an environment they will encounter
Apr 20, 2017, 9:26 PM
|

at most fortune 500 companies is a problem? Diversity and inclusion initiatives have been prevalent in business environments and government including the military for 15 plus years.
Clemson graduates should be prepared to function and succeed in these professional environments. It would be a shame if a young graduate innocently detracted from their career due to lack of D&i awareness and proper professional behavior.
Let me pose these questions: Does your company or organization have strict policies regarding internet usage, email, sexual and other harassment, discrimination etc.? Is there a pretty broad intpretation of what constitutes harassment?
Why we someone not want our students and graduates to possess knowledge regarding acceptable professional behavior.

I told the Give Day beggers... Get off my phone and STAY off my phone.
The year I needed a favor for an out of state student to get a full ride (2012), the State of South Carolina populous bitching (FOR YEARS PRIOR) about relaxing trending acceptances, changes Clemson's acceptance for that year. One year later, Clemson reverted to pre-2012 acceptance standards, "accepting the best students regardless of state residence/affiliation."
I am a legacy. The best I got in 2012, for my student that I represented, was that 'out of state for an in-state deal scam.'
You don't scratch my back in 2012. F-you.

Numerous articles in military media by high officers making a pro-diversity case and an anti-harassment culture.
There is even an Army video promoting diversity and inclusion.
Yet similar messaging and training at Clemson is somehow a problem?

Not necessarily, but there are 2 ways it can be a problem to me:
1) if society has become so crass that the course is necessary for proper behavior by students, in which case perhaps Clemson is doing what all schools should do and giving students the behavioral lessons they should have acquired at home far earlier in life - which would be a societal problem for me and Clemson should be commended.
2) if there isn't a cultural problem, but the administration decides to require it anyway - in which case I would be very disappointed with Clemson's direction.
An overarching question to me is whether a course in "Social Justice" is a part of the diversity question - or if it goes off the rails to a place where excuses are made for others in order to enable sub-par or bad behavior by others in a polite society.... and the latter is something I suspect is at the root of the course the professors were asked to take on inclusiveness and told that it was OK for some groups to show up late for a meeting. The old expression of "What's good for the goose is good for the gander comes to mind. I do wonder if two sides of these questions are explained in the classes, or if the discussion is what amounts to a lecture on how those of privilege should be more accepting and tolerant of those less fortunate.
Thus, my question(s). Perhaps my questions should be directed to a far broader swath of society, but Clemson is a small slice of societal makeup and seems like a good place to start asking.

I'm sure that military training also includes the requirement to show up on time for meetings and formations..... something that Clemson seems to feel otherwise about, as evidenced by the course professors were asked to take.
Is all of this about diversity - or is it something else entirely, but under the shaming banner of diversity?
