The other thread got me thinking. Why don't we have a direct

Mar 3, 2021, 11:31 AM

democracy?

Sure in history direct democracies do not work because you can't get everybody to come vote for every bill that comes up.

But with the age of the internet, we can solve many of the problems while reaping the benefits.

I say, create a government website where you have to log in with your SS# and a password. On it has all of the bills needing to be voted on.

The american people with SS#'s (fixes what the pubs are crying about) can vote on each bill based on what they want to see happen.

No more representatives. No more political posturing.

Sure our overall population would have no idea what they are voting on, but that's already happening with our representatives.

We would save a lot of money.

Sorry. For the republicans who don't know what democracy is

Direct Democracy: Think Athens. Every citizen votes on the issues that come up in government. There are not representatives. Doesn't work on a large scale because of in person voting would take up too much time of the citizens.

Indirect Democracy: What we have now. Think Rome. The people elect a middle man known as a representative to go to the government to represent their interests.

Direct Democracy is essentially mob rule

With it, slavery would have likely continued to be legal in the 1950’s and maybe 60’s.
Remember Byrd from WVa?

There's actually a lot of bills where the practical obstacles to that simply don't exist anymore.

One could actually argue that our representatives' role is now more properly to propose bills rather than vote directly upon it, and then let We The People decide for ourselves.

Interesting thought.

Won't work. As long as our "elected" representatives are

drawing up the bills.

Plus, logging in to a website? On the Internet? What could go wrong?

Not to mention who has time to read a 4,000 page bill since they're too busy working to earn the tax dollars that bill will spend? We the people would do no better than our legislators in that regard.

of representation, and the division of power among three branches, are there for many pragmatic and philosophical reasons that would require a term paper to adequately explore. TL/DR; we could just ask the coasts what they want and tell everybody else to bend over.

If you are ready to give up on all that has been entrusted to us, you are free to hold that opinion, but it might say a lot about what we are becoming.

Broseph, we have people who vent their own septic tanks, repair dry wall with pine cones, believe in a cabal of satanists who eat mole children, that Donald Trump was annointed by God, that Dr. Seuss books are racist, that drive slow in the left lane...

Imma go ahead and NOT want to have the public voting on issues they don't understand. 535 people voting on issues they don't fully understand is bad enough as is.

Here's the biggest problem with a direct democracy

The majority is not always right.

Mar 3, 2021, 12:38 PM

And the majority does not always want what is best. People who have been selected to represent us, who should have higher level of intelligence and discernment than the average person, do a better job of governing.

voting, and everything to do with the logical mistake of thinking that the collective ignorance of everyone in society will somehow magically turn into wisdom through voting.

I don't disagree with any statement ITT so far

Mar 3, 2021, 12:57 PM

There are pros and cons to the system. And part of government's job is to protect us from ourselves. Meaning the people elected to congress should be smart enough to know when there's something they should vote NO on even if the mouth breathers of their constituents disagree.

Anybody see what I'm getting at?

I definitely am in the camp of...the representative

Mar 3, 2021, 1:22 PM

was chosen to vote the way that is right, not necessarily to just vote based on what their constituents would say in a poll. I think they too often are thinking about the latter, because re-election is a primary goal.

This^

Mar 3, 2021, 1:33 PM

I expect my representative to vote for what’s right, even if counter to what we constituents believe.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Even if it's counter to what I believe.

Mar 3, 2021, 1:35 PM

I expect him or her to vote his or her conscience. If, after their term is expired, I don't feel like his or her conscience matched up with mine enough, I will vote for someone else.

Mar 3, 2021, 1:26 PM

you can have anything that you want, just have to do it through a constitutional convention of states

get busy

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Even that is done through state legislatures.

Mar 3, 2021, 1:31 PM

So still not democracy in a pure form.
