Recent Engineering students GITT

Apr 19, 2021, 3:02 PM

My son wants a MacBook Pro. But it is strongly recommended engineering students get a Windows computer. I think a MacBook CAN be used with a windows emulator or something like that, but not ideal.

Thoughts?

What's the computer for?

Wants = instagram
Needs = engineering

I'd buy the apple for finding instamassages like Deshaun, the winders for actual engineering.

Simple answer based on your OP.

Get windows based...

Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, etc. all work so much better off windows compared to Apple.

State engineering may still offer SolidWorks

I took SolidWorks one semester and I am thankful I had a windows laptop for that.

replace, vs. breaks and no computer for however long it takes you or him to get it fixed/replaced.

The options when I were in school

Apr 19, 2021, 3:41 PM

kind of sucked. There are "comparable" programs for mac, but theyre never the same and professors/TA's don't teach on those programs so you are left playing catch up figuring out how to figure out not only new material, but how to do it on the mac. You could also boot Windows onto the machine. I didn't do this, but everyone I know that did said it was super slow. Remote desktop is always an option, but again, thats stupid slow and not always reliable if school servers are down for maintenance or you have a difficult time finding available machines.

I had a mac my freshman year and ended up getting lucky being able to borrow a windows laptop from my parents. Once I got the windows laptop, the macbook was only used for pron and downloading music.

Just get him a windows laptop.

Thank you. This is very helpful.

I emailed CCIT another question. I will C & Paste your answer in their reply, and FWD to my son.

SCORE!

I will get him a MacBook air for his pron - cause I'm not a MONSTER.

Keep in mind, I went to State

But cannot imagine the software not overlapping up to 99% of the time. I also graduated in 2013, but don't think there has been too much innovation since then.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

He wants an Macbook huh?

Does his boyfriend think that is a good idea?

I had a macbook in college

and if I had to do it all over again, I'd have gone w/ a PC.

Too much hassle having to always work around different programs and stuff.
