The only reason Usuc has beat Cu lately is oversigning ....

Jan 16, 2013, 9:39 AM

Pure and simple.Who would win ? A team with 100 players to choose the best from or a team with 145 players to choose from???duhhh.Spuurier has to cheat to compete and as soon as he cant do it anymore Clemson will start back thrashing that little chickens ####..

They stole our recruiting class the year Bowden was let go. Look it up they got our best that year and that's when the worm turned

Ok so you are choosing your best 85 from 100 or 145. To say that oversigning doesn't happen is naive.

I don't know about Clemson's commits but many of Carolina's recruits didn't qualify, probably 2 or 3 a year, went to prep or JUCO, and committed again, thus being counted 2 times.

No oversigning is not the prob

1. Clemson doesnt take Juco huge disadvantage. should have 4 to 5 players that are juco. They are usally in areas of weekness so they impact is huge.

2. SOS has been doing this long and longer at USC and has a team with less holes,

What juco, contributed to 11 wins, during the last two years? There might have a defensive lineman.

Jan 16, 2013, 4:15 PM [ in reply to Re: The only reason Usuc has beat Cu lately is oversigning .... ]

I assume several juco's at USC is your opinion, not a fact, since a quick glance at the USC roster shows two: 1) Byron Jerideau, a starter at DT from Fort Scott; and 2) Qua Gilchrist, a FB from Butler County

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Over signing does happen,

Jan 16, 2013, 10:00 AM

What are you thi.king dude. You can choose from every player on every high school team in the country. What you said makes no sense. If you are talking about commitments fine. The facts remain...25 for this class...85 total. If a school hss 25 commitments and 7 more want to commit also thats the kids decision. Some do it knowing they will gey placed.

I remember 1 example - SOS pulled Tommy Beecher's scholly

Jan 16, 2013, 10:18 AM

after the '08 season, so he didn't get to play his RS senior season in '09, though i think he did get his degree. He was a starter early in the '08 season, but was replaced by Smelley. Spurrier cut him to make more scholarship room.

Jan 16, 2013, 10:47 AM

That's called roster management not over signing and its also something we dont do but probably have to start to remain relevant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Call it what you want, but is it ethical?

Jan 16, 2013, 11:01 AM

I know you have the 25 per year and 85 total scholarship limits and that scholarships are not a 4 year guarantee and are renewed annually; players basically have no leverage after they sign LOIs. But say you only have room for 20 one year, but you really want to sign 22. It's legal but is it really moral to take a couple of 3rd string players' scholarships to give to a couple of new guys? And if they're juniors or seniors and have to go somewhere else and maybe sit out a year, they have to wonder if it's really worth it.

off the 4-5 they don't want during the spring. Sure all schools have transfers, failures and early exits, but when players that are passing/not in any trouble don't get the scholarships renewed and the coach is filmed on the practice field saying "some of these boys need to realize they're not college material" , then their fans act like there's nothing wrong, there's a problem.

Re: Nope:

Jan 16, 2013, 7:03 PM

Clemson also hurt itself (in the short term) when Bowden resigned.
The resulting coaching turnover (coordinators) has also hurt the team in terms of the players having to learn new schemes, coaches, etc.

However, that decision has paid off with an ACC championship in Dabo's third year as a head coach. (accomplishing something Bowden didn't in 10 years) That tells me Dabo was the right hire for the job at Clemson. I also think Clemson now has the best Coaching staff (H.C., O.C., D.C.) that they have had in a very long time. Although, I admit it took time to get there. Hopefully patience will pay off, and Clemson has found it's future coaching legend it has been looking for.

As an alum., I'm as disappointed as anyone that Clemson has lost 4 straight years to South Carolina. However, the Palmetto state "rivalry" obviously means a lot more to their fan base than it does to me. Especially knowing that the NCAA has proven that there has been extremely questionable activity in South Carolina's athletic department. It makes me wonder how legit their recent success (in all of their athletic programs) has been.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Nope:

Jan 16, 2013, 7:06 PM

It will be interesting to see how successful they are as Spurrier continues to get older and they lose their current talent.
(Lattimore, Sanders, etc.)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why a kid would want to play for that A hole is beyond me***

Jan 16, 2013, 7:24 PM

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because kids want to win and go to the NFL...

Jan 17, 2013, 7:14 AM

If they think Spurrier can help them do that, then by all means, go play for him. I can only speak for myself, but if I'm a high school kid I am going to pick a head coach by whichever one will give me the best chance of succeeding at the highest level, be it Dabo or Spurrier. I could care less about whether other people don't like my head coach because they think he makes mean jokes about them. Plus, I am going to have more day to day interaction with my position coach anyways, so I would care more about what he is like anyways.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Because kids want to win and go to the NFL...

Jan 18, 2013, 9:42 AM

At the end of the day, it comes down to opportunity to play in the NFL.

I think one of the many secondary considerations is enjoyment of your college experience as well. Clemson and South Carolina offer very different environments and personalities from their head coaches.

I prefer Dabo's youth and his ability to relate to players over Spurrier's experience and brashness/attitude. (but I'm biased)

I think that same attitude was what held Bowden back at Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well yes...along with having RBs, QBs, WRs, OLs

Jan 16, 2013, 7:37 PM

DLs, S, CBs and virtually every other position who have played dramatically better in each of the games for the past 4 years.

SC has gotten so far ahead that they walked into Death Valley against the greatest Clemson team in nearly 30 years and won with a backup near-walkon QB and their 3rd team running back.

Go back to the archives and Tnetters will have guaranteed everyone that none of the SC recruits for the past decade were good enough to sign at Clemson and only went to SC because of they were rejected by the Tigers.

So yeah, lets go back and retroactively rewrite cheating for players which everyone guaranteed Clemson rejected into the mix.

Silly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You missed the whole OVERSIGNING, cutting players aspect

Jan 18, 2013, 9:47 AM

of building depth of the original post didn't you ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No, I saw the silly "explanatoin" and was just pointing

Jan 18, 2013, 3:41 PM

out the lame after-the-fact revisions on why SC is just better at the moment.

The resident experts assured everyone that SC recruits were Clemson rejects and were guaranteed busts who would show themselves to be overshadowed by any number of Clemson recruits from the same classes. Now these same expert want to whitewash their previous stances to claim that SC was "running players off" to get these rejects onto scholarships.

Hard reality is that SC has made much better recruiting evaluations recently and it shows in that there is not one single area in the last 4 years where they have not been better than the Tigers in the game.

Position Edge
QB --- SC (even with their backup, Dylan Thompson)
RB --- SC (who would trade Ellington for Miles)
WR --- SC
OL --- SC
TE --- SC

DL --- SC
LB --- SC
S --- SC
CB --- SC
P\PK --- Clemson

It wasn't SC oversigning that caused Clemson to be unable to block Clowney\Talyor\Sutton on virtually every play in the second half...It wasn't oversigning which made the Clemson secondary make Thompson look like Tom Brady...those were bad signings by the Clemson coaching staff, not SCs.

Fix the broken pipes in the Clemson program and stop worrying about the new plumbing down at SC.

yeah...that's the only reason...***

Let's get real here, you people disagreeing with the OP, that's fine, but think about it,the practice pulling the bottom 4-5 scholarships every year and replacing them with those they think are better. How does this not build up depth faster than doing things the right way ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The only reason Usuc has beat Cu lately is oversigning ....

Jan 18, 2013, 10:37 AM

A team can only sign 25 players. It doesn't matter how many commit. If they bring in less than 25 the prior year they can bring in players early to count towards the prior 25 limit and then they can sign up to 25 on signing day. As far as I know there is no way to bring in more than 50 players in a two year time frame. These rules apply to everyoner not just SEC teams. Also for the past several years they have awarded scholarships to walk ons meaning they were below the 85 limit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If have 18 graduating , 2 leaving and were at the 85

Jan 18, 2013, 11:52 AM

limit last year, bringing in 25 in means up to 5 scholarships will be yanked ("not renewed")between signing day and August. Just because they're allowed to bring in up to 25,they're still oversigning when they bring in more than they have Scholarships for.
