What in the literal Blue Bloody Heyall is going on?

Jul 2, 2021, 4:58 PM

I get a lot of spam calls, like everyone else. But, ever since I woke up this morning, I have been INUNDATED with calls from "Health Care Services, Medicare Plan Help, etc, yadda yadda. I have blocked over a dozen different numbers today, they are spoofing new ones faster than I can block the old ones!

Did Skynet just go on line overnight, and Judgement Day has started? This is totally insane!

Edit: Even got another one while I was typing this post!

I've started talking to them about Jesus and being saved. They hang up pretty quick

I don't because I have found that for every call like that

you actually answer, it seems to add you onto a "Valid Number List" and you will get several more related ones in very quick succession.

My phone's call block registry is limited to 250 numbers, and about once a week I have to go in and delete about the oldest 20 to get room to add new ones. Today has just been ridiculous with the number of calls, something got my number added to a lot of lists.

If you don't answer, they will eventually give up. It has really gotten out of hand. If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer and if it is someone I need to talk to, they will leave a message.

That's the key, if you don't recognize the number, don't answer, and it if they don't leave a voice mail, block them.

But I do love sitting around when I'm bored, and I will blow my coach whistle as hard as I can the very second that I know that it is a BS call. Also, don't answer and call them back, it usually gives the not a working number message, block it!!!!

Jul 3, 2021, 6:28 AM [ in reply to I don't because I have found that for every call like that ]

The last time my phone blew up like that my identity had been stolen and in about 3-4wks I had a new car, a GM Credit Card, personal loan in Minn, new utility bill from Florida Power somewhere southern FL, a credit card with a change of address and a credit declination letter from Discover due to too many credit inquiries in the last 3 wks. I didnt know about any of them until I got the Discover letter that I knew I didn't apply for and couple days later had a GM credit card for $15k but it had been reported as cancelled due to change of address. And you know, I had like 3 addresses from these thieves and I couldn't get local police to even take the information to pass along to the local PD. Almost 3yrs later and I still get collection letters on loans and that is after I paid for Identity Theft Service that was supposed to fix everything.

So, if you get ton of crazy calls all the sudden, make sure you check your credit history daily just in case for a few wks. It's a major pain in the you know what!!!

I have my phone setup to block anyone that is not in my contact list. It’s send them straight to voicemail. If it’s something important, they can leave a message. I don miss messing with them sometimes though but got annoying every day.

Phone banks in India....

Jul 3, 2021, 6:45 AM

I was reading an article (kind remember where now) that there are phone banks in India that make up to 5 million automated calls/texts a day all in the hopes of just getting 500 people in the USA that will actually buy into the scams they are pushing.

The truth is the phone company's and Congress could put an end to most of the large operation phone scams and spam but do very little to stop it. Heck - Congress and their PACs are some of the worst spammers with their unsolicited robocalling and texting.

Check out Youmail. I've had a free account for years. It does a good job of blocking spam callers automatically, and you can manually block any that manage to get through. You can also configure it to play a "this number is out of service" message.

The only problem with the automatic spam blockers is...

Jul 4, 2021, 7:13 AM

the spammers are hijacking legitimate numbers, so you may end up blocking a friend's number!

If a spammer were to spoof the same number enough times, I could see how that could happen. Hasn't happened to me though in eight or so years.

Nope, passed that millstone over a year ago. The calls did

get ridiculous around that time, though. Wife turns 65 this coming year, they must be getting an early start. :(

we get bout 5 of these a day at the office, from various fake organizations looking for donations.
and I get about 2-3 calls a day on my cell trying to sell me an extended warranty on a car that is 10 years old and has 130k miles.. Welcome to the world we live in now. Ain't it great?
