Tell me whatcha think about this sitch.

Dec 6, 2021, 12:32 PM

There's a family that lives in my dad's neighborhood, about 2 blocks down the road. Biggest house in the neighborhood, and it was a weird build, I remember it from when we moved there in the '80s. Most of the houses are ~2,500 sq. ft., and this one is pushing 5,000, covered/bricked pull-through driveway, etc.--just doesn't fit in this neighborhood, honestly. They have teenage-ish and younger kids that are constantly riding up and down the streets in an unregistered golf cart and on non-street-legal dirt bikes and whatnot. It's not overly egregious, but it DOES annoy me even though I've never actually seen them do it, because I got pulled on my dirt bike in HS and got SIX (6) tickets, and lost my license for a good chunk of my senior year.

The dad is, anecdotally, and asshole and a bully. My dad stopped the young kids on the golf cart earlier this year or last, and asked the little girl driving how old she was. 10. No adult in the cart, and it doesn't even matter if there was since you have to have a valid driver's license to drive a golf cart on the road. He told her to tell her dad that what she was doing isn't legal and a huge liability if she wrecks or injures someone. The guy came down to Dad's house and threatened him from out in the road. I don't know/remember if Dad reported anything to the police.

So yesterday, I stopped by, and Dad is talking to our 90 year old neighbor, John. John had actually called the cops on these kids on dirt bikes a few hours prior. Cop car went down the road to his house, and the policewoman talked to the dad for 20 minutes or so. She left, and stopped by Dad's and talked to him for another 10 minutes. He told her about this guy's attitude, previous threats, and apparent volatility (remember, Dad has still never called the cops on this family). Policewoman leaves.

About 3 minutes later, dad down the street whips around the corner on a (not-street-legal) dirt bike and stops in front of Dad's house in the road. Dad sitting on the tailgate of his truck with a bourbon and ginger. "Come out here to the street so I can kick your fuckin' ###, you motherfucker!" to my 74 year old dad. Dad, about 20' away, says "Nah, I'm good, come up here." Dad would have pulled his .38 had the guy crossed the sidewalk onto his property, but fortunately, this dickhead seems to understand the concept of property lines and the consequences of crossing them, etc.

I've never even seen this guy, couldn't pick him out of a lineup. Dad clearly isn't scared of him, especially since he's armed, and he's not a hothead, and is FULLY aware of the consequences of pulling the trigger in those kinds of situations, so it would be an absolute last option. It's amusing, but its also bothersome, given the weekly videos of these kinds of confrontations that seem to always end tragically. Police have it on their radar, although I don't know what the policewoman recorded officially yesterday.

What do? Should I go have a word with this gentleman? I doubt it would net anything positive, especially since I'd have no inclination to be nice or reasonable to somebody that literally wants to fistfight my 74 year old dad.

Dec 6, 2021, 1:06 PM

a 10 yr old has absolutely zero business driving a golf cart on a road. None.

The parent has NO IDEA what kind of a liability that is. I'd go so far as to say that when the kid is snapchatting on her Iphone 15 and texting from her apple watch while listening to loud music and she flips the cart and gets herself or someone else injured, the parent could be facing some kind of neglect charge.

Dec 6, 2021, 1:18 PM

And certainly not a 16 yr old (which is legal for boat and motor vehicle operation).

A 10 year old. On a street. With cars.

Holler back when you realize your kid in 9 years ain't much more equipped to drive a golf cart on a road with cars than he is right now.

That, and lol at sending a 10 yr old out in a boat with a motor.

actually closer to 9. I was about 10 or 11 (what is 5th grade?) when I could take it out on my own. It parked in the back of our house in the water and I started working when I was 13 so I could put gas in it.

It was a 14' whaler knockoff with a 25HP Johnson. I even made it a duck hunting boat a few years later. Kept that same boat through college until it got destroyed from hurricane Hugo.

What's the upside you ask? Letting them live life? Learning some independence? 10 yr old flips golf cart and serious injury happens to 10 yr old kid. Or 10 yr old kid driving golf cart is hit by car and seriously injured (mabye not even the kid's fault).

Parent that knowingly allows the kid to drive gonna have some trouble to face.

Again I ask....what is the upside to letting a 10 yr old drive a golf cart on a road with cars?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're absolutely, positively correct.

Dec 6, 2021, 1:31 PM

Unless death is imminent though (doesn't seem to be) or something is negatively impacting me and mine, I just don't typically feel compelled to tell strangers about the bed that they're making for themselves to lay in. 19B's Dad did nothing wrong here, but is there a scenario where the parent gets the message from the kid and goes "wow, legal liability....never thought about that...thanks random old guy for scolding my kid, much appreciated"

Dec 6, 2021, 1:25 PM [ in reply to Seems like you'd have more of a chance hitting kids walking ]

But we had a little turd muffin on a gas cart with no roof who kept zipping around and driving recklessly. He was about 8, I think. He almost killed himself a few times and came close to hitting others. He lived in an adjacent neighborhood, and his parents could give two ##### about it. Like 19B's person, dad would get hostile about it but not threatening violence or anything.

It finally took a very real visit from law enforcement to make it stop.

I'm down with leaving people alone but sometimes their little crotch goblin has to be dealt with when the parents won't do it.

We had a buddy in our hood who was drunk one night and ####### on his phone in his cart. He smoked a median and got launched out. Hit his head something good and needed stitches. Whether your dad wants to use that to get a restraining order or something like that is something he'll decide, but from what you've said about your dad, he won't do it. Respect for that. Unless it gets worse.

But yes, the neighbors should keep calling the cops on illegal vehicles and drivers. They will involve someone else in an accident at some point. The same issue existed in our neighborhood, primarily adolescent girls in golf carts, which are more status symbols than transportation. The carts, I mean. A couple of phone calls from the neighborhood guardian - every neighborhood has one - got it stopped. Apparently the city police don't like it either, so do respond to those calls.

-Have your dad remove himself from all involvement. Eventually someone else will complain or have an incident with them.

-File a report for the threat. File a restraining order since it's two unwanted contact incidents. If he shows up again, video it.

-If they cause any damage to your dad's property, press charges.

-Make sure the HOA is fully aware of the situation. They will often get police more involved and now it's there problem as it's a liability to them.

-Any time this neighbor has a party, form a network with other neighbors and take turns calling noise complaints.

-Every so often, fill out anonymous drug tips with the local cops and say something seems suspicious. Get a few others to do it.

-And, you know, if you want, send me the guy's name and I'll pull as much of a background check on him that I can. See if he has a record.

Which, I'm happy to help arrange. With some caring motorcycle enthusiasts from Gastonia. And, they're licensed.

Well, to operate motorcycles, anyway.

I (19B®) would walk down to that dudes house, ask him to step outside and when he does, start taking off your clothes and tell him what a good time you both are going to have consummating your relationship.

Dude will not even look at your dad's house ever again

to ward off deer, birds, cats, and other unwanted beasts - a motion detector sprinkler.

I could see an application for this here.....

Hey 19B, thought about something else.

Dec 6, 2021, 5:07 PM

19B®

After the solid advice from pops, kid likely thought she was in trouble. Kids who think they’re in trouble lie. By the time the story was relayed to her Dad, it likely involved your dad pointing his gun at her, yanking her off the cart and threatening her within an inch of her life. So keep in mind that ahole Dad is probably operating on bad intel.
