Out of all the things the US has to worry about, why did the SC decide that Roe v Wade, which was settled law, decide its important enough to bring up and possibly overturn? What spurred this? Did they run out of other stuff to decide?

And why would Republicans make this their single campaign issue? Was their hand forced to do so? So many other things to focus on: inflation, rising interest rates, possible recession..and they pick an issue that already been decided?

Some things..I just don't get.

trying to score political points with their evangelical radical base pushed this which was then taken up by the USSC and all of Washington Republicans are rolling their eyes and the stupidity of the timing which may end up causing some major electoral issues for Republicans in the mid-terms.

Basically, people are saying if the court rules in favor of MS, it would overturn Roe v Wade. Which I'm not sure is completely correct.

It's not like the court is making a vote on Roe v Wade. That particular case has already had a ruling. Although, a lot of the media makes it sound like that is what's happening.

I thought that was what the draft opinion said was one of the arguments. I definitely could be wrong about that. And I have not carefully read the whole draft.

They could always make edits before it's final, but this is from page 5:
We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely—the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. That provision has been held to guarantee some rights that are not mentioned in the Constitution, but any such right must be “deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition” and “implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.” Washington v. Glucksberg, 521 U. S. 702, 721 (1997) (internal quotation marks omitted) The right to abortion docs not fall within this category.

to further and further their position for abortion at anytime would have something to do with it. It's seems that they just want to push their position as far left as possible so that any compromise would end up further left than it was before.

Don't disagree with your point that there are plenty of things to worry about, but this is one that is just as important IMO.

Also, before anyone chimes in "but what about......" the right doing the same way the other direction - no shit, save it. That's not the point.

First of all, the job of the SC is to take up matters of the court that cannot be decided by the lower courts. It happens ALL OF THE TIME, with laws that currently exist. To think that the SC wanted, or desired to touch abortion is laughable. They must, because it is their job.

Second, this is way down the list of campaign issues. ECONOMY #1, by 100000000000%. But you don't know that because your "handlers" only want you to think about abortion. Be smarter.

Roe v Wade as settled "law". Roe v. Wade is a judicial decision - NOT a law. Laws can only be passed by the legislative branch which brings us to the crux of the matter with Roe v. Wade. There is NO Federal law dealing with abortion rights. The leaked SC document overturning Roe v. Wade takes a fresh look at the subject and these justices found that abortion falls under the Constitutions 10th Amendment - the power to legislate it resides with the States.

Most intellectually honest jurists admit that Roe v. Wade was a poorly constructed judicial decision. Even Ruth Bader Ginsburg saw Roe v. Wade as "too far-reaching and too sweeping". As Ginsburg said: "Roe isn’t really about the woman’s choice... It’s about the doctor’s freedom to practice...it wasn’t woman-centered, it was physician-centered." While Ginsburg was pro abortion she also saw the necessity of obtaining abortion rights through the legislative process.

I disagree with your premise that Republicans are making this their single campaign issue. In fact it is the least talked about issue I'm seeing in Republican/conservative circles. Most of what I see is about inflation, energy prices, and the border - those are the big three.

The left is hoping the abortion issue changes the upcoming November election but quite frankly, most people who are Pro-Abortion aren't voting for Republicans anyway. I think the issue will have a negligible affect on the mid-terms for two reasons:

1. If Roe v. Wade is overturned abortion is not being "outlawed" but is simply returned to the States for legislating. As opposed to the national media, a lot of voters don't see local/State governance as "bad".

2. To most people abortion is an abstract issue - not something they personally deal with and certainly not on a daily basis. Inflation, the price of gas, and having ones earnings and savings reduced is a very real issue that almost everyone sees and feels on a daily basis.

They didn’t just bring it up out of the mystery grab bag of issues to re-examine.

Pubs aren’t the ones focusing on it as the campaign issue. If anything there’s a pretty clear split in the party whether to embrace this or pretend they never heard of the draft ruling. Dems are trying to make hay with it, which I understand.
