Could not help but notice that we went with the three man

defensive front several times last night. I hope that was due to the shortage of D-linemen due to injuries, and not something that will become the norm. For some reason, the national narrative is that our defense is probably our best ever, but I don't see anything even approaching the havoc that the Power Rangers used to cause. The LB corps may well BE the best ever by the time they are done.
Now, with Bresee, Davis, and XT playing, if we STILL don't get consistent disruptive pressure on opposing QBs, it'll be time to worry. I surely hope we return to the four down linemen set when they are all healthy.

Our front 7 is one of the best in the nation. Our secondary is very suspect.

I think that it was more due to the "Air Raid" offense. A lot of passes that get out quick neutralizes the line to an extent.

I think being down several tackles - Bresee, Davis & Williams - may have had something to do with it.

D stats
we are 23 in pts/game, 39th in yd/game, 63rd in 3rd down %, 64th in sacks, 35th in 1st downs allowed, 62nd in passing yards allowed, and 11th in tackles for loss.
Against opponents Ga Tech, Furman, and La Tech.
There is no data to suggest our defense is even very good much less one of the top Ds in the country. We think they should be good and want them to be good, but they are not even close yet.

…it is good to see these “base schemes” being implemented and flipped based on the situation.
Goodwin’s “genius” is yet to show through (IMHO), but I am hopeful that it is his ability to mix these schemes into the “present state” of all situations and watch the players react accordingly.
So far, so good, but the “mesh” next week in Winston will give us another CRITICAL data point on Goodwin. At least, Goodwin was in the room with Coach V last year before the Wake game.
