Who won the Battle of the Moving Vans, Kelly or Riley?

Dec 1, 2021, 9:21 AM

For me, it's a no brainer. Riley moves into a rich recruiting area, and an conference that should be his for the taking, just as the Big 12 was for so many years.

Kelly, meanwhile, moves into the cutthroat world of the SEC West, where cannibalism is a yearly thing. But, he too moves into a rich recruiting area, he just has to convince all those guys that LSU is a better option than several other SEC schools that are also after them every year.

I also believe that at these institutions, BOTH coaches are going to find far more "Boosterism" than they were led to believe, and will have to quickly learn to navigate those minefields, while trying not to alienate them in these NIL driven times. Buckle up, if you thought the ride was wild before, you ain't seen NUTTIN' yet!

Alternative way to compare the two programs.

USC has been squandering that rich recruiting ground since Pete Carroll left town.

On the other hand, LSU's last 3 coaches have won national titles while in town and none of the 3 had as much success prior to taking the LSU job as what Kelly has seen at his previous stops.

Saban was building at Mich St but never saw the program reach the highest level.

Miles was very average at Oklahoma St prior to taking the LSU job.

Orgeron failed at a couple of schools before winning a title with LSU in a short stint.

The key word for LSU is "short stint". Coaches there seem

to either move on voluntarily (Saban) or get shown the door (Orgeron and others). Maybe they are content to be the Miami Marlins of college football. Win a championship, then quickly dismantle the whole thing, only to do it again a few years later?

I would much prefer to be in contention just about EVERY year, as Dabo has done here. Unless I am WAY wrong, Riley will quickly build that same kind of consistency with USC. I don't think he would have taken the job if he didn't believe there is a much better chance of getting over the final hump and winning Nattys there vs Oklahoma in the SEC.

Riley moved into a much weaker current for sure.

There isn't much resistance to a rise on the west coast at the moment.

Basically if Riley can pass an Oregon program that falls all over itself mid-season each time they show some promise, then he will give himself a shot at the playoff.

My different perspective is that maybe LSU is a place that coaches can build really quickly.

LSU's roster is far more talented than USC's at the moment, but Riley is making a hard run at trying to close the gap by signing spring practice through transfers and recruiting.

I do agree that coaches seem to fizzle out quickly at LSU. Maybe it is due to the toxic nature of the general environment around the school.

It still stands though that I don't think LSU has ever hired a coach with the resume that Kelly has, but even less accomplished coaches have gotten to the highest level there.

Kelly's situation at LSU will certainly be interesting to

watch, to say the least. However, if Vegas were to put out an Over / Under on the years he stays there, and 5 was the trip, I would take the under. He better have immediate, and I mean immediate success, or his leash will be real short.

Same Under.

LSU better *hope* that Kiffin gets a better offer sometime and MSU gets tired of Leach. Otherwise, the SEC west is going to be beyond brutal. Even O's luck hit when everyone one else was kinda flaky/rebuilding. Jimbo only was 2 years in. Kiffin was brand spanking new. Same with Leach. Arky was a trainwreck and Auburn was still as bipolar as ever. Basically now everyone else is now a season or three ahead of Kelly. For O, he was a couple years ahead of the SEC west rebuild.

Kalen DeBoer (Washington) and Brent Pry.

Good, solid hires. No fuss. No one will be over analyzing that pick. Both sit in fairly decent spot and not they either win or not.

Also, every quasi-hotseat coach. Like Manny. They might have moved IF they thought they could land a btter coach. Sometimes winning is not getting the moving van.

I was thinking that VT should have gone after Dan Mullen... I realize that UF didn't work out for him, but Mississippi State was a different story, and I felt like he would have been a good fit at VT....

I am certain Ray Tanner reached out to Mullen just in case VT came after Shane

I expect Mullen to sit a while. He signed the extension with Florida in June, 12 million buyout, and he is now paid to do nothing. He will wait for the right spot. I don't think VT could offer that amount of money and when VT started their search (likely over the summer) they already had their homework and targets before the Florida folks panicked again

I think its a push..

Kelly takes over an extremely talented roster and can continue to recruit at that level. He's proven he is a winner no matter the level or location and will have LSU in the Top 10 again battling Bama every year until Saban leaves. I also think he can easily beat Saban. IMO, he's immediately tied for the 3rd best coach in the SEC right now with Fisher.

Riley needs to build the talent pool for a couple of years but will have USC in the Top 10 by year 2 at the latest, maybe next year.

Depends On Ones Criteria

Very good points. Kelly definitely wins on the food aspect.

Clemson... and thanks to whomever sabotaged Venable's vans.***
