Who had all the tools but never quite reached their potential?

May 8, 2022, 9:42 AM

In some cases it could be injury that detailed them, like in the case of Willy Korn. It could be legal/problem child issues or just a lack of development. For me 3 players come to mind that had all the physical tools but other problems.

1. Mike Bellamy: I don't know the details, but kid could sure run
2. Xavier Kelly: All the tools, but looked lost in plays
3. Work with me here, I don't recall his name. Guy was a Baseball player that came to Clemson as a RB, #40 I think. Dude was Beasting guys then fumbled agaisnt SCST blowing a shutout. Not sure his deal but he certainly showed promise.
Ok, so if you got this far and like me are marking time until kickoff would love to hear some of your thoughts on guys that had promise but never quite did it.

Roscoe Crosby was a disappointment. Was pumped when he committed.

Bad dude both on and off the field.

Fellow who was part of the strength staff back then related this to me.

Doubt Arthur would fit into our current culture.

Who has all the “tools” and no potential? The Democratic Party.

First name that popped into my head was RC. Super talented, couldnt focus on his future. Similar to the following.

M Bryant blew his opportunities to be a Pro-Bowler and many of millions richer if he could drop his crutch for 6-7mos a yr.

I think Kelly Bryant should have dropped the QB dream and become a WR. He was pretty good with the ball in his hands as a runner. Could have had some hitch plays, pitch back passes, wildcats but WR full-time. He should have made that transition while at Clemson while we were Natty level team to build his resume instead of playing for Missouri.

Not really sure if Harper reached his full potential. Not sure if that was on him or his coach, but he was highly rated out of high school.

He could have developed into a machine on the oline. And his size carried him through. But he could have been so much more had he been a little more focused

I cannot remember the names of many on the OL but one could assume we may have had a lot of busts at that position.

Cannot remember his name but I believe there was a highly recruited left tackle in recent years that played like a statue. It may come to me in a bit.

else, could ever have lived up to it. It was the same kind of "Hometown Savior" vibe that Steve Fuller had when he signed with Clemson. Although, Fuller actually lived up to the advance billing, for the most part! Korn never really had a chance, because he could not overcome injuries.

Re: Who had all the tools but never quite reached their potential?

May 8, 2022, 10:53 AM

What position did he play?

Also not as strong at TE comparative to the last few seasons. No true slot receiver hurt. Need a few pieces on the offensive side. Could have been a small part of DJ’s struggles last year even though I know he would miss some wide open throws. The GA game though we missed a lot of back shoulder throws that were there in the past but the WR and QB were not on the same page.

Hopefully the OL can open some holes for Ship and Mafah and we can take the ball out of DJ’s hands as was the plan in the latter part of last season and worked out great.

Mafah is a stud and I believe he could show a lot given more carries.

Apologies I feel like I have hijacked this thread but all this came to mind with the whole unmet expectations.

FWIW that could be true -- dude played baseball in the Braves farm system and I remember some folks talking about him making some noise in camp as a power back who could run. He was like 6 ft or 6'2 and 230-240lb-ish.

Watching him live (if my memory is accurate), idk if that straight line speed translated well to the football. He did seem to have a quick step in the limited action I saw but he never had an open field run to see if he had that kind of speed.

Definitely a player I wanted to see more of but he left like mid season with no real explanation provided to the media.
