This is likely an unpopular opinion but so be it

Dec 10, 2021, 7:48 PM

While I admit I dislike losing "commits" we were long overdue for some flips. That said, losing any kids from IMG dosnt trouble me as bad as some. We have gotten a fair amount of kids from IMG over the years and frankly none have been quite as hyped. Who were those recruits you ask? Well, These 3 gone, ok. Also how about XT. Solid if unspectacular to be objective. Mike Jones? We know how that turned out. Same at other schools imo. Remember Kellen Mond? I personally think k the IMG kids get propped up a LOT by playing with top notch teammates, coaching and facilities as opposed to a guy that has to be THE Guy on a team filled with guys that will be bagging groceries and working in the factory next year more often than not. So, I would have loved to have kept them, and this year could turn into another "Dandy Dozen" but all will be well in the end I believe. Go Tigers!

Careful, I got slammed for saying the same thing about KJ that you did about CT… love the kid, the advocate for the school and great person they are— but honestly was a disappointment in terms of expectations and development. Goodness forbid we give on the fired football takes. Tnet terms are mostly irrational and emotional… I tend to agree with your IMG assessment.

Well, I have to say these are not popular opinion and I've gotten a fair share of being grilled. But my opinion has always been about the Jimmy and Joes. Honestly speaking, everyone runs the spread and most run a base defense. When it gets down to it, does my guy beat your guy. Imho that's how Saban has won with having HS coordinators (not really but) .

So, while our player rank may have gone up, something isn't working. Either it's developing, or evaluation. Imo we miss Hobby and Scott.

Not specifically but generally speaking, you get a player from small town public school, he had to be special to ever get noticed. He probably had average coaching and average strength and conditioning. When he gets to College, there is a huge area for rapid improvement. There is a lot of ceiling he is nowhere close to. You get a player from above named football prep academy the opposite is true. The running back looks good because he played behind elite i.l. etc.....
He has also had college level coaching and conditioning. There is not a lot of upside left. You won't see quick improvement when brought in the system.

KJ had a great year this year, and did not dominate on the field as early as expected but he was the polar opposite of most of the kids that go to IMG when he entered Clemson. I have attached an article that includes the video of KJ’s commitment video. If you haven’t seen it, please read it and watch the video because it says a lot about him as an 18 (maybe even 17?) year old. I have posted this several times because I was so impressed with his selflessness even while he was in high school. His contributions as a leader on this team may have outpaced his on-field production at times but I would rather have that than an overhyped player from a place like IMG that doesn’t reach his potential as a player or as a leader. I love XT and just hate that he didn’t turn into the dominant force we kept waiting for and I believe there has been a lot of growth in his maturity in the last year or so which I believe came from sticking with the program at Clemson. I don’t think it was there when he came to Clemson from IMG and I think that held him back a little, especially in his sophomore year.

And don’t forget - KJ hasn’t said for sure yet whether he is coming back new year or not and he is eligible…

HS players have at most 1 chance to get it right with a scholarship to play football. If players do not think they will get to play at Clemson then it is best they move on. CU does not need a bunch of players who tie up Scholarships but want to leave after 1 year. Best they not sign with us. Better to have players who want to come to Clemson and work hard to get to play even if its their junior year or later. Go Tigers.

The issue with that in todays college football

Dec 10, 2021, 11:53 PM

Is how many of those kids are you going to get that are highly rated? Very few. Maybe Clemson can get the hand full of highly rated guys that don’t mind waiting and working and develop the rest and still be competitive. With NIL the top guys want to start from day 1 to get paid. Basically the ones that don’t start year one or get significant playing time and know they will start year 2 are going to leave with the transfer portal allowing no consequences. So you either continue to recruit those players knowing some of them will leave after or before year 1 or you recruit a bunch of 3 star develop guys and have a elite season every 3-4 years.

Spots

Dec 10, 2021, 11:50 PM

I agree that losing recruits from IMG is not per se bad. But, the real damage is that they occupied three spots that the coaches could have used to recruit other top tier players. Now we are late in the cycle with few outstanding prospects remaining.

I don’t ever want us actively recruiting there again. I mean, its different if a top kid who is there seeks out Clemson and wants to be here, but as far as us being there working guys because of star ratings? Nope. Those ratings are suspect and sketchy anyway, and they don’t show a kids heart or value system.
