"The Hill" back in the day ... normal average crowd

Dec 25, 2017, 2:00 PM

As we debate the future for "The Hill" and become anxious over the smaller crowds on the grass, here is a look back at what sort of occupancy it usually had for a conference game back in the 1960s ... this is for an NC State game I believe.

Yep , that's about right for the '60 's .
There might have been 42, 000 total on good day .

My , have things changed .

grass hill between the west end zone and the north stands.

Loved to walk over to the hill by the west end zone

Dec 25, 2017, 2:38 PM

and slide down during the game as a kid.

That was a steep little hill with the big oak. Can't remember the year they took the oak down.

I could stand up the whole game at the top of the hill

Always wanted to as a kid but my dad said “ I payed for you to watch the game not slide on a hill” lol. He still watches games from the west end zone just pays a lot more. Fun memories.

Still, Clemson to me will always be that view of the Hill, the stacks, Tillman, sirens

before game time.

For oooold timers, older than me (50) when did we stop wearing white at home?

Dec 25, 2017, 2:53 PM

Was it our choice or did the NCAA mandate dark at home and we complied?

Except for the USuCk game, we wore

Dec 25, 2017, 3:27 PM

white at home from about 1960-1965. I liked the all white at home back then. NCAA didn’t make the rules. LSU wore white over gold pants all the time. Georgia Tech was another that wore white at home.

It was all white at home during the 1950's through 1966.

Dec 25, 2017, 2:58 PM

I like the H-shaped goalposts where the players could run straight through from the Hill. Like at FSU.

Question for old timers, were receivers not consistently running into the goalpost since they were in play where many passes would be thrown.

Position of goal posts ...

Dec 25, 2017, 4:39 PM

I never saw a player run into the goal posts, but I'm sure it did happen from time to time.

But, while college goal posts were on the back of the end zone, remember that in the NFL at the time, the goal posts were actually up near THE GOAL LINE itself !!

I remember a few hitting or running into posts occasionally. If you can find it, there was an old NFL highlight of Ditka going face first into goalpost, back when he wore a one bar face mask. They would slow it down, it was funny.

It happened, but not often.

The goalposts were used to "pick" defenders at times.

The NFL had the goal posts there too.

Halfbacks and fullbacks would dive over the line right beside the goalposts, using them as knid of a blocker.

Couple yrs back I ordered a custom pen and bottle opener that were made from one of the oaks that was damaged after a storm. I wonder if that pic from the 60’s has that tree in it?

I like those old style goal posts.

That tree on the far right was the last one cut. I have a few things made from that tree also.

If that is the last tree removed, then my son purchased it and has it milled and drying in Asheville. But I thought his tree was in the left corner. Center cut at butt is about 54 inches. Several pieces are wide enough to make a table with a single piece.

That was my recollection. I’ve got the paperwork somewhere that gives the details about the tree that the pen came from.

of my four years, and the biggest laughs during games were directed toward the kids sliding down the hill on cardboard...most of whom yelled or screamed the entire trip down.

Fast forward a few years, and kids were always stopping by our tailgates, begging for cardboard, and we usually obliged.

No doubt, some of these kids are now on TNet. Way to go, young folks, we enjoyed you! lol
