but our coaches seemed to (finally) realize that the plays used for previous quarterbacks weren't a good fit for DJ, so the philosophy was altered to better fit his skills.

Amazing what coaches making the right adjustments can do for a team.

Streeter deserves a lot of credit for this. Although I still maintain that he's in over his head, at least he showed some flexibility that Elliott didn't.

Here's to Streeter being able to continue to make adjustments as we play better defenses this year. As you know, we've played four defenses so far that aren't exactly good.

Let me know when injuries, new coaches, and emotional weeks are no longer being used here to justify poor coaching.

That's a stretch even for your mental gymnastics. You've bashed the guy until the minute you needed a new narrative. DJ and his receivers are executing better. As they execute better, the play book opens up. You can't discuss any aspect of Clemson football without taking backhanded jabs at some part of the team. What plays exactly do we cut from the game that "weren't a good fit" and what new ones "better fit his skills". I'd love a single example of each so I can quickly prove you wrong.

I have been one of the ones defending DJ.

Sep 26, 2022, 10:48 AM

I have repeatedly said that he's a talented pro-style QB who was recruited to play in an option offense centered around a dual-threat QB. That's not a knock on DJ at all. In fact, I have also stated that he would flourish in a better system and with better coaching.

If you or anyone else has an issue with DJ not getting the credit he deserves, take it up with the hundreds if not thousands of people here predicting his failure and calling for a true freshman to be the starter since the spring.

You have consistently knocked his ability to work within Elliott/Streeter's system. You emphasize that he was recruited as a pro style qb. When doing this you're insulting his adaptability, the staff's recruiting evaluations, and Elliott/Streeter's play calling ability. As his play has improved you've softened the stance on DJ while increasing your criticism of Streeter. As previously challenged, what actually changed from a play calling standpoint? We certainly didn't shift into pro-style offense. He still ran RPO. He still threw slants. What was excised from the playbook and what was added? You claim you saw it so it really shouldn't be hard for you to show me up.

I agree with you that pro-style seems to be the natural style for DJ. However, I also have to give him a ton of credit for working to become a better dual threat. He put in the work to get in better shape and also the work to better understand how to run RPO.

One of the things I noticed on Saturday was I felt he could have kept the ball more on the options, and gained more yards, rather than handing it off. All of that decision-making comes with experience so I expect him to get more comfortable with those decisions as his experience grows.

it probably doesn't hurt a lick that we now have, I think, two tight ends who are capable of catching the ball, so there's some middle of the field to play with again.

Loved that we finally found the TE again. I thought that was a big change from previous weeks and a real difference maker on Sat.

I'm happy for DJ but there is no way he is the highest rated or graded passer in all of college football. This post is just wrong...

In passing efficiency he is ranked #40.

The way we have been winning is like the 2015 season. We won a bunch of close ones, but were a very good team by seasons end. I'm not saying this year's team is as good as the 2015 team, but hopefully we will continue to improve throughout the season.

Coaches figured out that he can't make a postsnap decision..

Sep 26, 2022, 12:02 PM

and started calling draw plays which appear to be option reads and RPOs. Imo, this is a dangerous receipt which can become more about coaching than talent. When you have a DJ behind center it always comes down to that. Cole and Kelly suffered that same condition. They could execute a play if it did not require them to think postsnap.

DJ's only decision on a pass play is whether to throw the ball to a receiver or throw it into the stands. On draws or handoffs there is no decision. It's working well so far but it will not get us pass the first round of the playoff unless a patsy shows up as our opponent. We might have some fun being the patsy.
