Anyone else growing tired of these 17 year old prima-donnas?

Jan 26, 2016, 6:11 AM

These young football players love all the attention and sense of entitlement way too much for my taste.

Especially the ones who will wait until signing day and announce live on ESPN where they plan to play football. CFB needs an early signing period badly. We need to shift the power back to the universities and away from immature attention-seeking teenagers. Just sayin......

that the term is "pre-Madonna," which in the case of these teenagers has a certain truth to it! lol

My Friend, as you are aware, we can thank the media for the attention given to recruiting, and I suppose were I in these kids' shoes, I would enjoy my 15 minutes in the spotlight, too. We can also thank ourselves, for we seem to relish the hoopla as much as the young men. The drama does offer a little excitement to this sometimes bleak time of the year.

Jan 26, 2016, 6:36 AM

The media and all these sites would not exist if there wasn't a market for them.
it is more us than the media. We turn these kids into media frenzies. Hanging on their every word , stalking them daily and nightly. Will it every stop? Yo, I don't know. Turn off the lights, and I'll glow. To the extreme I rock the mic like a vandal. Light up a stage and wAtch a chump like a candle..dance.

able to come up with that this early in the morn.

Could be that we envision ourselves in the spotlight through these youngsters and hence, our enjoyment of the "game." Or else we have little else to do this time of year.

Woods, there is two sides to that story. These kids are getting a free education, a platform to showcase their talents, in a program that not only helps them grow as a player, but a man, just for playing football. You and I have a VERY different opinion on what a college player's "fair share of the profits" are. We could sit and argue this all day with no resolution. The university is responsible for EVERYTHING financially with regards to the school, the stadium and everything revolving around a college football program. These kids are treated like kings while they are in school. They go to class, practice their butts off, and sacrifice more than your normal Joe-blow student. I bet if you ask any present or former football player, they wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

That's great and all but without these players, the school would not get the multi-million contracts from tv rights. So if the tv company says they want a tv show about kids making their announcement, then by God the school should make this happen.

I remember when I was a high school athlete. I got the girls, I got the fame and I got what I wanted.

To complain about "pre-madonna" athletes is futile. There will always be narcissism to the highest degree with the best athletes in any sport.

College football should thank their lucky stars the NFL doesn't have a minor league program.

Complaining about signing day is the dumbest thing I can think of to complain about.

And that's exactly what paying the players "what they're worth" will make it ... Professional football.

Who determines exactly what each individual player "is actually worth" ?? How is that determination made ?? And what do you do when Player A decides he is worth more than Player B ??

What do you do when School A decides they have the funds to pay their guys more than School B and School C ??

It's just a ridiculous concept to begin with.

Re: "these kids make hundreds of millions for the school"

Jan 26, 2016, 7:20 AM [ in reply to these kids make hundreds of millions for the school ]

This is an important decision in the recruits' lives. They should choose carefully and take all the time that they can get until they are sure of their decision.

Aside from the original post, the players don't, "make the money." Perhaps you didn't literally mean this, but there is so much misinformation being spread that I thought it deserved some constructive clarification again. The athletic departments have always made the money and always will. Without the athletic departments and their marketing efforts (including conference revenues), a game becomes another backyard brawl that nobody knows about. Only about 30 football programs make more than $5 million. Up until our recent bowl successes, Clemson was not one of them (even last year, Clemson made only $118,000). Most lose money. Those that make money must subsidize the remaining sports programs in their athletic departments. More recently, the SEC made $300-$500 million per year in TV revenue divided amongst its members. Still, that is the exception. None of this was the players' idea nor execution of the idea.

Here is a little bit of information.

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150823/PC20/150829752/1032/clemson-x2019-s-smaller-budget-hasn-x2019-t-hindered-football-triumphs

If you are implying that the players should get paid with money, you should think that through. It would mean the end of college football or, at best, only those 25 or so programs surviving with the schools with the most money winning year after year. No thanks. The players already get paid. The value of their education, collateral benefits, discipline and training are easily worth > $1M over a lifetime.

As a former student-athlete at Clemson....

Jan 26, 2016, 8:19 AM [ in reply to You will Never convince me that is true. ]

I would have to disagree with your assessment, at least in part.

While I do agree that dealing with the attention seekers does become a bit tiresome, student-athletes, particularly at the collegiate level, invest an unbelievable amount of time and energy into their respective sports. In fact, the amount of time, travel, and energy that students devote to sports due to, at least in part, the extended time away from campus and the inordinate time demands placed on training, is often a stark contrast to that allocated to academics.

There is also no denying that intercollegiate sport is a business enterprise, one which in many cases emphasizes "athlete" over "student" in the "student-athlete" equation while at the same time serving as an advertising instrument which benefits admissions and fund raising efforts for the college or university. On that basis, properly monitored and controlled, it is not unreasonable or imprudent to consider paying college athletes in addition to providing scholarships.

No sir. We as fans let money turn these programs

Jan 26, 2016, 8:56 AM

Into money making machines.

No matter how much money is generated in this process, these are still students. We use money to skew that into something different.

I dunno your academic situation. But I'm confident is saying most these kids do not meet minimum standards for typical admission.

Many kids put in hard work academically and do not get this opportunity. That in itself is a mega benefit.

I will bring up the 30/30 on the fab 5.

I remember the part where Rose taking about being used. He was saying he had to drive around in a Honda accord during school . He said this right after they showed him and the team wandering around Italy.

As a comparison. .I didn't have a car until I was 21 and I still to this day have never been to Italy. So it is hard for me to sympathise.

Lastly, in your situation, I don't think soccer is self funded. If it wasn't for this evil empire there would be no soccer, swimming, golf, volleyball, track, any womens sports scholarships. That means thousands of other kids would lose the chance aT an education.

This empire is not run by a board collecting 300% returns on their investment. The majority of those million dollar deals go right back to the students. Mostly student athletes. The only exception are these multi-million dollar salaries. . Which I agree are getting ridiculous.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

I'm not really talking about cars...

Jan 26, 2016, 10:02 AM

or trips to Europe (although the trip to Italy was a post-season trip over the summer the kids absolutely did not want to take), I'm talking more about things like going to a movie, buying a pizza, a new paid of jeans, or simply doing laundry.

These kids, especially football and basketball players, who may not meet minimum standards for typical admission, also don't have time for part-time jobs to make a little extra spending money due in large part to the amount of time, travel, and energy that is required for their respective sports.

On that basis, I don't think an annual stipend is unreasonable to cover those real costs beyond tuition, room, board, books and fees that come with attending school.

The biggest concern I have is corruption. There's no doubt some schools will take advantage of this to help recruiting which is why the NCAA has to regulate it closely and disallow some schools in similar geographic locations from paying significantly more to its athletes than some others.

I understand

Jan 26, 2016, 10:17 AM

I brought up the 30/30 to illustrate rose telling everyone what he didn't get instead of what he did.

I dunno about the deal you got back in the day.

The last detailed information I saw I what indicated these kids get more money than I ever have.

I survived completely on student loans and Pell grants. After tuition was paid I had around 6000 to pay for food. Rent , bills. .etc for 9 months.

howrver, I was able to work in the summer though to support me until the next payout in August.

I played a non-revenue sport....

Jan 26, 2016, 10:37 AM

and very few male student-athletes who participate non-revenue sports get full rides. I certainly didn't. As I recall, the soccer team received either ten or eleven scholarships annually to divide among its thirty players. Consequently, most of us got around 33.3% but we put in the same amount of time training, practicing, and traveling as the football and basketball players (in some cases more because we rarely got to fly to road games).

I kind of enjoy the excitement on NSD if a recruit is going to choose Clemson. It takes the luster out of signing day. When Steward/Anthony waited to announce was a lot of excitement. Let there be some drama and let the young kids enjoy the excitement. Does TV take it to far and make "Stars" out of them, yes but I see nothing wrong with them waiting.
