Why can’t we just go Independent?

May 16, 2023, 10:49 PM

Why can’t we just go independent? we can work out our own negotiations with networks, discuss any kind of rights to broadcasting agreements radio and television. To me going independent sounds good, but if you would consider how Notre Dame handles it, they haven’t had an issue with getting into the playoffs with this four spots, opening it up to more spots. Would that not increase Notre Dame‘s chances of getting in regardless of being independent? They’re in as long as they maintain a competitive team?

FSU was an independent for years. If you are ND and can set up your own TV contract, you can do it.

But, if you are an independent, you are looking at a huge variation in income from year to year.

Stability.

1. TV revenue. You get a share of revenue whether you go 10-2 or 2-10.
2. Bowl games. You get the conference share whether you go to the playoffs, the Orange Bowl, the Bahama Bowl or no bowl at all.

Clemson would do fine if the football team made the playoff semifinals every year and made the sweet 16 every year. But, a couple of years playing in the Cheez-It bowl and not making the NCAA tournament would be devestating.

Terrible idea.

Just ask those who have been there: FSU, Coots, and most recently BYU. All could not wait to join a conference. No, we are not Notre Dame. The Irish might be able to pull it off but not many others could and be better off.

The Capons tried that back in the early 70's...

and it nearly bankrupted their athletic department.

Granted, Clemson has a mush bigger market presence than the Dirt Peckers, but still.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.
