Why Clemson could and should be #1 in initial CFP rankings

Clemson could and should be #1 Tuesday based on criteria by which teams are judged according to the CFP Guidlines. And it may stay that way.
According to ESPN: They are guided by these criteria (not weighted) when choosing their top four teams: •Championships won •Strength of schedule •Head-to-head competition •Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory)
When judging by these guidlines, to date, Clemson could be the first team to win their conference division (although not yet accomplished, Clemson can win the Atlantic with two wins in the next two weeks). Alabama and Michigan may not win their own divisions until the last weekend of the regular season as Auburn and Ohio State are on course to set up division-deciding games.
Clemson has the best SOS so far this season with wins over three teams currently ranked. This includes two true road wins over teams currently ranked, as well as a Troy team that could find its way into the rankings (this is where Radakovich should pull his weight on the committee). Clemson has also notched the best win of the 2016 CFB season in defeating Louisville.
Head-to-head doesn't do much for any contending team at this point, but could go a long way at the end of the season if Clemson is to lose and Louisville decides to become a factor (the same could be said for Michigan vs. OSU/Wisconsin or Bama vs. Auburn).
Common opponents will be huge at season's end if Auburn continues to surge. The SEC Championship game could have a Florida team that Clemson will have two common opponents with.
Clemson has the clearest path to the playoff. Rivalry weekend and the conference championship games will be huge this year. It is completely conceivable that a two-loss team makes it to the Playoffs this year. No way an undefeated Washington jumps an undefeated Clemson, period.
Biggest wildcard: How a two-loss Wisconsin will be judged in a potential B1G Championship game against Michigan or OSU. Would the committee put a two-loss B1G Champ Wisconsin in over a one-loss Mich/OSU in a situation where each team owns a head-to-head, but where Wisconsin owns the championship?
All we need to do is win out. Take care of business and we'll be in Atlanta for New Years. College football has a way of working itself out - never fails.
Go Tigers!

It really doesn't matter as long as they're in the top 4

Who's #1 in the first poll is meaningless. To win a national title they will need to win 7 more games, so they just passed the mid point in the season. If you look at the 4 undefeated Powe 5 teams Clemson is by far the most likely to finish 13 & 0.

It's not that meaningless.

Being #1 for Clemson means we'll play in Peach Bowl. Other than that, it's not a guarantee as we could play in Peach Bowl or Fiesta Bowl.
Although last year we traveled really well to Arizona, going to the same place might affect us. We sure will pack Georgia Dome.

That seeds the teams for the playoffs, so there will be lots of time to move up.

wildcard to me is Louisville. Unless something goes incredibly wrong they won't be a conf. champion, but they are good. I really think they are one of the best teams in the country, maybe more of a one man show, but when needed the team can play. I will be interested to see where they end up bowl wise. I also think that would be interesting about if Wisconsin ends up beating OSU/UM in the B1G championship.

I think Louisville is overrated. They have now barely won over two teams that they were a 32 + point favorites. We would have beat them by 40 if not for the 5 turnovers.
I can't stand Petrino who is complete Scum and Louisville is the only school who will take them which lowers my opinion of Louisville.
I do not see why the ESPN and other sports outlets are trying to get them in the playoffs and everyone is voting for Lamar "I can barely speak" Jackson as the Heisman Winner. He had his first comeback to win a game in the 4th QTR against pathetic 2-5 Virginia. DW4 is money when the game is on the line. No, he has not played as well this year but I still think the Heisman Committee should take a look at this full body of work. Watson has one loss in games he started and didn't get hurt. Unless something goes horribly wrong, he will go down with one of the greatest records in college football over 3 years.
I do not think their is any way on earth the BCS should give a team that doesn't win their conference a shot at the playoffs. They had their chance and they lost.
However, I don't think playing Louisville again would be that bad. I think we would bring more pressure the whole game like we did in the 1st half and I am expecting us to be making less turnovers. The game at FSU we had no fumbles and two INTs which were just extremely athletic plays where DW4 got baited. However, he sure did not having any problem when we needed to score.

In all honesty they are in the same boat as Texas AM. 1 loss team in the best division in their conference that won't make the championship game (their loss to bama). Texas AM has played a much tougher schedule than Louisville. They would get the nod by the committee in this aspect. You also have to consider they might also be up against Michigan if Ohio state beats michigan. Michigan is a huge football school and has been highly regarded this season as well. There's no way Louisville gets in over Texas AM or Michigan if all 3 teams end up with 1 loss.
