While last night's finish reminded me of 1990 for a second

Mar 10, 2022, 9:48 AM

I will never remember the name of the guy who hit the shot...in fact I couldn't call it now, a day later. That Tate George shot haunts me to this day. This hurt a lot, but there is no comparison. And there was a LOT more at stake in that game vs UConn.

I will always remember where I was when that happened - Sherlock Holmes Pub in Nassau, Bahamas, on spring break my senior year at CU. For fan heartbreak, the only other one that compares is Puntrooskie a couple of years earlier, and I was in the stadium for that one.

I am a relatively young Clemson fan, at 53; what other single plays that didn't go our way have you seen that will forever be burned into your memory?

Onside kick against Bama in the first championship game
Calvin Johnson his freshman year (pretty sure that was the goof on the long snap on the punt game too)

Good examples

I remember them both very well. Agree on both counts, but I still put UConn and Puntrooskie ahead of them. Even though the onside kick was in the national championship game, and figured heavily into the eventual outcome, that wasn't even the only play in that game that I might put on the list. OJ Howard is definitely another name that I will never forget.

At least an honest clock last night. I can't recall the time left, I think a fraction of a second. Definitely not enough time to make a court long pass, catch it and turn around and get the shot off. Didn't hurt as bad as 1990.

The fumble at the goal line vs WVA in the 2012 Orange Bowl that WVA ran all the way back for a TD of their own. 14 point swing that changed the entire game in one play. The rest of that game was hard to watch.

BINGO

You ain't lying. Still the biggest single momentum shift I have ever seen on a single play. People don't seem to remember that we were dominating that game early.

But as much as it hurt to watch as it happened, it only elevates in the heartbreak category because of the final result several quarters later. Have no idea what the returner's name was...although I do recall who coughed it up.

Agreed, there was a lot more at stake in that game, and it

would have been awesome to win, but we would have eventually had to forfeit the win (like we did with the other games in the NCAAT that year).

The big hurt was in the Clemson

player backing off and letting him shoot it wide open. that's what hurt. RULE: always contest any shot of any length at the buzzer. Just don't foul. But it would almost be better to foul in many cases than they even get the shot off.

Sean Tyson’s defense was very passive for sure.

It’s hard to contest a shot vigorously without the chance that some ref will see a phantom foul on the shot. But Tyson really just backed off and let him take the shot.

We were pretty passive all the way. We did a decent job on the inbounds, but then let Tait George catch the ball cleanly with no real opposition setting up the shot followed by Tyson backing of and lowering his hands.

Still ... the shot should not have counted anyway because it was after the time ran out. Of that much I’m positive.

Gets me upset 32 years later!

To this day it is my contention that Elden should have been down on the other end of the floor to contest the shot not guarding the inbounding player.

I was on Spring Break in the Florida Keys when Tate George hit that shot. Elation to heartache in an instant.
