The Baseball Team Made an Impression

Jun 6, 2016, 11:14 PM

I saw a Facebook post today that was written by one of my former coworkers. I thought it was worth sharing:

Well Clemson ended their baseball season last night. I'm not a big Clemson fan but I am a big fan of several of the players. I really like following the kids that I've watch play as youngsters and now playing at the college level.

We went to all of the Clemson games in the Regional Series this weekend, lots of ups and downs, last night's game was no different except Clemson lost. Lots of fans left early and lots more left immediately as the final out was made. Then there were the players & coaches families, lots of players girlfriends and classmates, some die hard Clemson baseball fans and then a few like me who just like to stay to the very end and for all of those that left before the very end you missed something very special.

After the traditional shaking hands with the opponents, interviews, etc. the team formed a couple of lines and stood arm in arm and sang their alma mater. It was about 12:30 AM and it was very quiet. Several in the stands joined in and others in the stands like me just stood there in awe. As they ended singing they all lifted there hats as is tradition when singing of one's alma mater but when they were done they tipped their hats to the few folks still there in a gesture to say thanks for supporting us and then they all turned facing their opponent from that game and gave them a tip of the hat as saying congrats and good luck moving forward.

For a few of those kids it was the last time wearing a tigers uniform and for some the last time playing baseball ever. It was a very moving moment, one that showed that the Clemson baseball program is a class act. I just wish that the stadium could have been packed with all the fans from earlier to see. If they could have just hung around for 20-30 more minutes those fans would have seen the greatness of their team.

I hung around with my two boys (11 and 7) until most of the players began to leave. It was neat to see them interact with their families. I was stunned by how much they were willing to interact with fans (signing autographs for kids like mine, and even taking pictures) even after a bitter ending to their season. Like you said, it's a class act program with a top-notch leader in Coach Lee. Clemson Baseball is in good hands, hopefully for a very long time!
